One day, Tina suddenly awoke on a spaceship. It was a pretty cool spaceship, but she felt confused because her family was nowhere to be seen, and there wasn't a welcome video or something to explain what was going on. And yet, Tina was sure this wasn't a dream and

[And Tina decided to flip on the video function, as well, after fiddling around with her communicator a bit. However, as soon as she did, her old stage fright managed to take over, and all that came out of her mouth was a prolonged groaning noise.]

Uuuuuhhhhhhh...

[After her broadcast, the first thing Tina did was tear apart the hospitality deck in search of her family. There weren't many places any of them could hide here, it seemed, but she kept looking, trying not to go into full-blown panic mode.]

Mom? Dad? Gene? Louise?! I'd even take Jimmy Jr. or Zeke or Mr. Fischoeder if you're around... but maybe not Jimmy Pesto... [It was a while before she calmed down, realizing that she was alone... for now. So she did the only other thing she could think of to do- went to the cafeteria to eat, try and decide her next move, and wait and see what sort of answers she'd be getting.]

Family Fracas was a game show we managed to get on. We did pretty well on it except the part where we never won the new minivan we were after.

[She then considers the first part.]

Maybe they're... ... no, I'm not sure what else this could be if there's no audience.

[He has no idea what a minivan is. ]

[Tina then sighed.]

I almost rather WOULD be dealing with a real audience, even if my acting skills aren't the best. I'm not sure how much help I'm going to be otherwise...

It's okay, from what I understand about reality TV, you don't have to do a whole lot of acting for it anyway.

You'll have a chip in your head, that's your augment. It gives you a job to do on whatever ship you end up on.

And they edit things to make it look good, anyway.

Well, that's good, because I don't know how to do much aside from cook hamburgers, and clean up... [And then the "chip in your head" part sinks in, and the groan returns.]

I'll take your word on that. We don't have it back home. Or TV at all. Actually.

[His eyes widen, he knows what a hamburger is!!!!]

Nonononono, don't start groaning again! Go back to the bit about the food!

... really? That's weird.

[OK, hamburgers she can concentrate on. The groan dissipates, and she seizes onto that subject so her very active imagination doesn't delve into what could possibly be done with a chip in her brain.]

Uhm, my dad owns a restaurant back home, and my brother and sister and I have been helping out in it our whole lives. I'm old enough to be able to help him cook, but I'm not as good at making burgers as he is.

Not if you're not from Earth.

[He's an alien, Tina! ]

That sounds delicious. Could you have all the burgers you could eat?

[She brightens at that.]

Not from Earth? Really?! You look like you're a human, though...

[She then nodded.]

We weren't busy sometimes. Okay, a lot. So it was easy to make our own lunch if we were hungry, but Dad's a pretty good cook in general, not just burgers. So's Mom. And I'd get tired of eating burgers every day, even if Dad does his best to make creative ones.

That's because I am a human. Earth isn't the only pale with humans, y'know.

[Though he has to admit, it sure is a popular place for them. He'd think about science around that, but his train of thought is interrupted by Tina's sacrilege. ]

...How could anyone get bored of burgers every day? It's meat! Meat is the best food there is.

Oh! You know, I never thought of it that way. Usually in fiction when humans visit other planets, or people from other planets visit us, they're always aliens. But who's to say humans couldn't evolve elsewhere?

[Tina grinned.]

But meat is great. I just like to have it in a variety of forms sometimes.

Just makes sense, right? There's plenty of humans here from different planets.

[And lo, she has tapped into the great love of his life. He sighs dreamily. ]

Yes! Meat is just the best, and so versatile. You can put meat with anything.

That's... that's really cool. [She sounds a bit perkier now. Well, "perky" is relative for Miss Monotone, but still.] I'm not thrilled about being separated from my family, but at least it's not going to be boring, right?

[She nodded.]

Gene- my brother- likes it best in the form of tacos. I'm not too picky myself. Beef puts food on our table, in both the literal and figurative sense.

Nah, it's never boring. And as far as we know, no time passes back home. So it's not like they'll have to worry about you or anything.

[He'll take that tiny bit of perk, miss.]

Oooh I think I've had tacos on the Fleet. Are those the ones with the crunchy shells? Man, I would love to live in a house like that.

[Tina nodded slowly, unsure whether or not that bit was true yet, but choosing to believe it. Otherwise she'd start groaning again. Or making that gasping noise her dad hated.]

Yeah! And it's not a bad life at all... we might not be super rich, but Dad gets to do what he loves. I kinda like it, too... in fact, without working in the restaurant, I'm not sure what I'm going to do here.

It's good, doing what you love.

And hey, that's kinda the thing. Other than helping run your ship, you can do whatever you want here. We got all kinda of options to pass time away.

I can expand my horizons... and find all sorts of new things to write fanfiction about, too.
