[There are days when McCoy would gladly turn in his lab augment for an engineering one. After practically picking apart the Caprine and then putting her back together bolt by bolt (with a lot of help from actual engineers out there, thanks) he's about ready to airlock himself.

He's a doctor, not a goddamn mechanic. It's like learning anatomy all over again, except this time he doesn't understand a single thing. Glory be, at least, they've finally graduated to trying fix the many issues in non-essential systems.

Like the kitchen, where McCoy is now making sure it all works again, after having spent hours trying to put it all back together. Spoiler: it doesn't go well. That's why he's waving away wisps of smoke and coughing a bit when he addresses the Fleet.]

I need an engineer. Again. [Sigh.] I'll pay you the going rate. Come on over to the Caprine. It's the ship in the most pieces over here. [There goes more credits. Everything exploded again. Someone just... put him out of his misery.]

Or I can share some of the terrible stuff that Master Lannister and I discovered at our previous stop. I still have a spare bottle. It's green. [ And very, very, alcoholic ]

Doctor McCoy!

[He's found them a small table in the bar; he looks tired -- even exhausted and there's lines of stress evident in his face, around his eyes. But he waves Maglor down and sits up a bit straighter - he'd been lounging - without hesitation.]

That's a hell of a bottle. [He says it as Maglor approaches.]

Master Lannister thought so too.

[ Maglor says wryly and eyes it ]

Very potent stuff. Just the thing, I think.

That's perfect.

[He has a couple glasses out already.]

How'd your ship fare in all this?

I thought you might enjoy it.

[ Maglor agrees and pours for them both ]

Well enough, but our engines were damanged in the last salvo, and we are ... what is the phrase? Dead in the water, as it were. Minor injuries, but we have several healers on board. Yourself?

Dead in the water, yeah. [That is the phrase you're looking for, congratulations. McCoy takes a glass but doesn't take a drink yet.]

We've got some power to the engines but everything else is shit. Hell, they even ransacked our galley.

We managed to prevent theft, at least - of people, as well as things. The raiders were slavers, as well, it seems.

Not surprised. The fact they were tryin' to take us alive is the only thing that gave us a bit of an edge on the Caprine.

[ Maglor makes a face ]

I little like it - Slavers are persistent, and I fear they will try again.

I'm sure they will. Makes for good ratings, too.

[ A dark frown ]

You think the attack a deliberate ploy?

It crossed my mind.

[ A low, irate hiss ]

Now that you say it, it is also in my mind, and I like not the implications. Are you armed, doctor?

[He winces, just a little. He doesn't like the implications either and they've been rattling around in his head since the attack.]

I don't make a habit of it, no.

It might be a good idea, if this is going to be an ongoing thing. [ Maglor says grimly ]

Perhaps a knife? It would be easily hidden, and could be repurposed for more medical needs.

I see your point. [A sigh.] But I don't know, Maglor. That's not my thing. Never has been.

Because you are a healer. [ Maglor nods, understanding ] But it might be safer, that is all. I will have to see if I can find something suitable.
