Iskaulit mingle
Who: Anyone!
Broadcast: No
Action: Iskaulit
When: Feb. Drift Week (and beyond?)
[The fleet, more or less patched up after their battle, has once again left civilization behind for empty space. Maybe it's a good time to distract yourself and get away from the endless repairs and nothingness, though there might still be cleaning up that needs to be done here too.
Whether you're grabbing a broom or grabbing a drink, this is a fleetwide mingle for the Iskaulit.]

[But there's another thing, and his gaze keeps flickering curiously to her ears.] This is...there's no good way to ask this, but...are you an elf? [She's not reacting to him the way he'd expect of an elf - for one thing, she hasn't yet questioned his ability to read - but his experiences here have taught him that most elves from other worlds don't react the way he expects them to.]

Even so, her hand goes up to her ear, and she frowns briefly before shaking her head. Though her eyes do go to his ears, to see if that's why he's asking]
Not quite. [she purses her lips, watching him carefully] I'm half-elf.

[He shakes his head before he can start babbling too much.] ...So am I. I haven't met any others in the Fleet, so I was curious... ...My name is Yuan.

She isn't sure what she should even say, but the relief in his expression tells her that maybe her world isn't the only one unfair to their kind]
Ah - that is because there aren't any others on the fleet, that I know of. My name is Tempest - [she sits up a bit straight and after a moment, offers a hand] Well met.

Half-elves aren't uncommon on my world, but from the conversations I've had with elves here, that doesn't seem to be normal in other places. I admit it's left me a little out of sorts at times.
[He pauses, then adds dryly,] On the other hand, the elves I've met here were willing to have conversations with me, which isn't really normal in my experience either.

Your world sounds quite a bit like mine. [her lips quirk into a wry smile] The elves here are not what one expects - they are very kind, and very welcoming. It does leave one a bit confused when one is used to different reactions.

Yes, exactly. Although one did almost hit me with a fireball, but then that turned out to be an accident - an actual accident and not just faking innocence, somehow he wound up with magic he wasn't supposed to have.
[He shakes his head,] Which, by the way, is that as strange to you as it is to me? In my world, elven blood is what gives magic users the ability to sense and cast magic in the first place - there's no such thing as an elf without magic.

Though powers being switched, or ending up with magic that isn't yours is . . . well, it's familiar, albeit strange]
That . . . is indeed very strange. It is not . . . exactly the same in my world, everyone is capable of magic, more or less, but - an elf without magic, even a little bit, is unheard of.

[It's become a part of his identity, his pride, possessing a power that humans fear and detest. Naturally, then, having humans around who can lay claim to something he considers a part of his unique heritage is fundamentally discomfiting. He's not foolish or trusting enough to bring that up with any humans yet, but perhaps a fellow half-elf would understand better.]

Just because everyone is capable of it, though, does not mean everyone uses it. It is actually not as common as one would think.
