Not a thing has changed. At least, not that I know of. [he just put a ring on her finger.

As Winn explains the situation, though, Hank sits back and crosses his arms, frowning thoughtfully] Well - a vaccine is used for biological threats to the body, like disease. You're essentially introducing the body to a very weakened form of it so that it learns to recognize it as a threat and build the proper defenses. Lead poisoning isn't a disease, though - it's a poisonous metal. So the body's defenses work differently when it's introduced into the system.

[he scratches at his cheek] There are treatments for it, if someone is poisoned - chelation therapy or activated charcoal, depending on the severity of it. I can run some tests - [he nods to the vial] - to see how quickly it builds up and if there are any other effects. I know how it works for humans, but - is "Y" human? Mutant? "Other"?

Wow, Hank, you're such a romantic.

[ you are so lucky you got her, bro. ]

I'm not sure how to treat it, like poisoning or an allergy, or what, I've never seen it happening and it's really out of my field, so I'm totally in your hands here. [ he nods ] Um, other. Alien, so, we're dealing with a different physiology that comes from a different environment. [ no it's not kara ] Hope you're in the mood for a challenge.

Well - you've got a sample, so we can run some tests to see if it should be treated like poisoning or an allergy. [that seems like the place to start, honestly] I'm always in the mood for a challenge - especially one like this.

[it's maybe a step down from cocky but it's about as confident as he'll ever sound]

As for a solution - a vaccine might be out of the question, but there might be a way to build up an immunity another way. We'll have to see what the results say first, but we don't have to rule that out just yet.

[ just a look at that, hank, you know what it means.

he listens intently, and claps hank's back gratefully. ]

I knew I could count on you! So how do we do this?

[no he doesn't know ok nothing has changed!!

He grins, and reaches over to grab the microscope to pull closer]

Well first, we look at the sample itself. I'm familiar with human blood and - well, mutant blood isn't that different - but alien blood is a new one. So we look, note the differences and anything else, and then . . . well, take a sample of the sample.

[. . . he pushes the microscope in front of Winn, then reaches into a drawer for the slides] Ever studied a blood sample before?

[ no wonder you keep needing his help. ]

Yeah, not in depth, but yeah. [ raven showed him hers, and he's been studying with beverly. ]

[beathach]

[that's super rude bro.

He makes a gesture to the microscope] Well, tell me what you see, then.

[winn]

[ scooting towards it, he looks through the microscope. ]

Well it's red, got that right. [ okay we got that joke out of the way. he clears his throat. ] On first glance, it kinda looks not that different, but then uh - [ he moves so hank could take a look ] I have no idea what that is or what it's doing there -

[it's an important joke to make. He blinks and steps closer to look himself, then . . . leans back, eyebrows furrowed in confusion]

I don't know what that's doing there, either. Huh.

I'd make the "it looks alien" joke, but . . . we already knew it was alien.

Do you realize we're going to study something we don't even have a name for?

[ sorry he had to take a moment to acknowledge the awesomeness of what they're about to do. it's terrible from a practicality stand point - it'll make everything slower - but you gotta look on the bright side! ]

So, what's our first move?

[don't worry, he's equally excited. He peers into the microscope again, lips pursed thoughtfully]

I'm - not sure, actually. Obviously we document everything we see, and I can look at the samples I have from other planets to see if anything similar is there -

[ he wonders if kara knows what it is. she was only a child when krypton exploded and this is daxamite blood, but she was a very well educated child so there is a chance, however slight...

he nods. ]

Looking through data I'm good at. [ alien biology, not as much. ]

I never would have guessed. [he chuckles and reaches for one of the notebooks usually present on his counter and holds it out for Winn] If it isn't in there, I'm sure Charles has samples I haven't had the chance to look at yet -

[ you get a look there, hank, the kind that very clearly says smartass. he grabs that notebook, and opens it up with one hand, saluting with the other. ]

I got this, boss.

[it takes one to know one!! He just grins at the look and grabs the notebook he usually scribbles his notes in to start writing down what he actually sees and recognizes first]
