Glitch time! Angel man ain't so angelic

[Luckily for the fleet, Arthur's decided to broadcast near the beginning of his evening, meaning he's still on his first glass and reasonably sober.]

Would anyone be up for a bit of a trip down to the ring tomorrow? I've been hearing some nice things about the area and it might be nice to get outside for a day or two. Especially after how artificial everything was at the last place. And it's always better with company.

[Takes another sip and sneezes, shaking his head. As he does... well, his control of his powers slips and a pair of wings pops out of his back, halo glowing over his head, and typical clothes swapped in a second to a matching white tunic. He doesn't notice until he picks up his glass for another sip and sees the reflection.]

...bugger.

[Tosses back the rest of the glass and ends the broadcast. Going to need another one.]

It's weird to have them just show up without reason.

And I'm not exactly human, so that doesn't really apply.

No? Huh, so you some kinda spirit, too?

[Because yay for finding more non-humans. He was beginning to think they were like rare unicorns.]

But stuff's been weird around here a lot lately. Saw people talkin' to themselves and I had this weird beast follow me around for hours.

I wouldn't say a spirit, exactly, but I suppose it's close enough.

[Is used to being completely surrounded by humans, so at least being in the minority is pretty common for him?]

[He sighs.]

It was just one of the animals from the ring. Wouldn't leave me alone for hours, but then it just suddenly stopped and wandered off. I dunno what that was about.

Can't say I know the term. Japanese, I take it?

[Would ask Kiku if he were at home.]

Maybe you were close to its nest or something.

Yeah, Japanese - means I'm a spirit that lives inside an object.

[And hopefully he won't have to explain that whole thing considering this is another non-human, but he's ready if he needs to.]

But maybe. I dunno. It was determined as hell to stick its head up my armpit, and then it just wandered off. I don't get this stupid place.

Anyway, what're you if you're not human and only "close enough" to a spirit?

Oh? I've heard of things similar, though I think most of those have been more haunted objects than inhabited.

[Curious about the difference, really.]

Heh, yeah I guess some people who don't know better might call us haunted, but seein' as we ain't dead before we show up, that's the difference. [Right? To be haunted, you have to be a ghost. He thinks.

[Well, supposes that's going to come down to a difference of semantics.]

Well, that's where the close enough comes in. I am England, personified in human form you could say, not really the spirit of.

And yes. I don't remember the exact year, but it's been about sixteen hundred years.

[He rolls that over in his head and yep, that makes sense. He nods and then shrugs as he accepts this new truth. Countries can be people just like swords can be people - how they come to be that way doesn't really matter.]

[Being a simple sword has its benefits sometimes.]

And considerin' how strong your nation is, you'll keep bein' around for a long time, huh? Kinda jealous about that. We swords can only live as long as our blade is around.

[Not being challenged on it makes a nice change. Arthur nodded his head, trying not to beam too much at the slight compliment.]

Roughly sixteen hundred years and counting so far.

[He thinks back - a thousand years older than him. Six or seven hundred years older than the oldest sword he knows.]

You must've seen some interesting things then, huh? Do you live among the humans or apart from them?

[Sure feels it sometimes too.]

With them. They're a part of me, in a way. No people, no country. I actually work for my Queen and Prime Minister.

[That's the part he can't fully understand, but he's going to equate it to the people being like his vessel and extrapolate from there.]

So...you're their home, but you have to work for them? Ain't that a little backwards?

Well not really. Look at it this way: a monarch rules their country, yes? And it's also their duty to take care of them. The relationship is symbiotic when you have a good ruler, so it makes sense to stick close to them.

[I mean...sure? But the last time Doudanuki was around in the world, the monarch was a figurehead for the shogunate that was fighting with other warlords to control the emperor so they could consolidate power and eventually go corrupt.

So............]

So you take care a' the ruler and the ruler makes sure your people don't up and die.

[Well any ruler can be their boss. Doesn't have to be a monarch. And well, they're not all good bosses.]

Pretty much. As long as the people keep following them. If they don't... well, I'm sure you're familiar with what happens then.

[YEAH, THE FUN PART OF HISTORY.]

Yeah, that's when swords like me get to come out and play.

[Chuckles. Of course a sword would like battle.]

Exactly.

I missed the best years of the battles 'cause I came in at the end, but where I was used, I was used well and killed my fair share. Sometimes I miss those days, but I know it ain't good for a country to be constantly fightin' itself.

...Can't mean I don't miss it though.

I'm with you there. I don't like war as a concept, but... I can't say I didn't love the thrill of battle.

Civil wars, however... I'll pass. Those hurt.

[Speaking of-]

So, does it leave a scar?

[He points at the large one he has across his entire face and the smaller ones on his jawline.]

'Cause a lot of swords get scars over time. Some of us heal up after and some of 'em stay. Not really sure why.

[Pauses.]

They do sometimes. One of the few things that can.

[So their bodies aren't all that different then.

He sits back and scratches one of the smaller scars on his jaw.]

Hn. Hope you ain't got too many then. I can remember gettin' most of mine and they weren't very pleasant.

Except for a couple. Those were worth it.

I know nations with more. My internal wars have largely been between my brothers and I, so they don't leave the same marks.

They still weren't particularly fun.
