Er, so a lot of strange things seem to be happening, but none of us are dead or being attacked again, so I figure it's best not to question it.

...Illegal or immoral? Most of the things I've done that were actually against the law aren't the ones I have any reason to feel guilty for - petty theft, at worst abandoning my post fighting a pointless war.

The law is full of loopholes, for better or worse. Neither of those sound too bad--no one can fault someone for not wanting to fight in a war, though that begs to question why you were in the army in the first place.
