[Belthazar neatly stacks the books in his arms, then turns back to his tour guide.]

I have never met a robot I liked, but perhaps that's because they are all so poorly made.

[Hiro obviously wants a demonstration, and who is Belth to turn him down? All the better if this human child understands his limitless power. HA. Well, okay, maybe not limitless.

His eyes glow fiercely for a moment, burning with green fire. He murmurs a few vaguely Latin-sounding words and holds out his hand. His aura turns visibly blue as he channels. At first there's only a puddle on the floor, but it doesn't seep into anything, doesn't soak the books.

It forms into a somewhat... cute-looking??? water elemental with little beady watery eyes. It's only about five feet tall, but it bows to Hiro, then looks to Belthazar for further orders.]

This is Celsius. [Belth sets the books in the water elemental's arms.] He is enchanted so that he will not make anything wet-- unless you try to stick your hand through him.

[whaaat. WHAAAAAAT.

[hiro's jaw is pretty much to the floor in the best way possible. he watches this display of power, much flashier than any other magic he's seen thus far, and the elemental has his utmost attention as soon as it's rising.

[he makes sure to bow in awe right back, and the grin is breaking out on his face by the time he straightens. belth's explanation has him even more interested, thinking of ways that could be applied to things in a practical sense for science.

[by the time he's done talking, hiro looks like he might explode.]

That is sick!

[his voice gets a little high. he's absolutely wowed.]

[That's not slang he's familiar with, so he kinda stares for a moment before he figures out the context. He glances from the elemental to Hiro, and he's... not sure how to react. Hiro's not turned off by his snobbishness enough to really matter, so Belth stands there uncertainly with his ears pinned back.

The-- the enchantment was my doing, but it isn't a very uncommon spell, all things considered. The summoning, that is.

[He's spent time on modern earth. He figures it's along the same lines as 'COOL' or 'WICKED' or 'RAD', the latter of which doesn't even make sense to him.

He huffs a bit, but Hiro can tell he's blushing.]

Science and magic aren't the same thing. Not if you think science is taping things together and hoping they don't explode.

Arcane magic has a life of its own. The backlash from a failed spell can kill you, and certain kinds can even unmake you.

They're not the same thing, but they're not too unalike. Science might not ever try to unmake someone, but... there's life in science, too.

[Well... maybe? It's not like there's anything else to do in post-apocalyptic Britain.]

Is there? [It's an honest question. Now Hiro's the one with eyes on him, blazing teal-green and curious.]

Well, yeah. My brother--he's the medic on this ship--back home, he developed a robotic nurse who not only is pretty much the most revolutionary piece of tech in our world, but he can learn. Expressions, social cues, even a sense of humor; he's pretty incredible.

[look at this pride.]

And that's just the beginning of what technology and science can do. We've got phones that can connect us to our closest friends and family everywhere in the world, medical procedures that can heal new kinds of diseases every day, platforms for sharing our experiences with the whole world... Life is science; it's just... documenting how it works. So any theories of magic there are in your world, that's science, too, technically. Y'know, why certain types of magic affect things certain ways--that kind of thing counts.

[Belthazar flat out STARES because this kind of shit just Doesn't Happen on Azeroth. The robots there might have personalities, they might even snark back! But they don't... learn, not like people do.]

Science is documentation? [That... makes so much sense.] So you're saying that it's used to explain how things work, for when you look closely at them.

The only difference between science and screwing around is writing it down.

I never thought of what I did as science, but the lengthy papers I've written on various arcane theories would certainly qualify.

[He's... somewhat pleased. A few months ago he might've been infuriated by this argument, might've thrown a tantrum because how dare he have something in common with a human, but... curing diseases? That's relevant to his interests.

He looks down, smiles a little.]

... Perhaps I will look at some of these other textbooks after all.

Trust me, it'll be worth it. Your magic could be used as an energy source to make something run cleanly, or to keep it from breaking down... Just off the top of my head, I can tell the applications would be limitless.

[Energy source. Oh, right. He looks a little startled at the reminder, and then his ears pin a little against his head.]

Yes, it can. That's the most common application of domestic spells. We have brooms that move by themselves, lanterns that follow you and cast light without a touch. And that's only a couple of examples.

But mana isn't endless. I'll need to... find some other way of getting some, because mine will deplete with the magic I use.

Oh... Do your people draw it from something specific, then?

[It's just history, he's not bothered.] The Sunwell. It's a fountain of mana and holy energy. It was-- destroyed for a few years, and we had to sustain ourselves without it. I remember how.

[He bites his bottom lip.]

It will not be pleasant, but I will manage.
