[ the feed opens with a profile view of a sleeping winn. on his face, you can see an elaborate sharpie painted mustache (courtesy of opal) and from the ceiling right above him hangs a plastic flamingo in a coat and plastic sunglasses (courtesy of cisco).

to anyone who's been by to see him lately, it's a very familiar scene. but seconds into it something that hasn't happened in about two weeks begins to take place - movement. with a soft groan, winn reaches a sluggish hand to his face, shielding his eyes from the light. the hand then seems to decide that scratching above his upper lip is better use of its time and skills. slowly, his eyes blink open, struggling to adjust, to focus.

and then they do. on that flamingo.

he yelps, jumping up in bed, tearing the flamingo off its strings and throws it across the room, where he proceeds to stare at an off frame army of (four) flamingos. rubbing at his temples he mutters just loudly enough to be captured on film ] So Cisco's still here...

[ that seems to remind him of something, and with a sharp move his still sleepy mind can't seem to properly cope with, grabs at the communicator and misses. next attempt brings it into his hand and you finally get a close up of that glorious mustache.

he frowns into the camera ]

Of course it's rolling... [ his voice is raw, lips chapped, and he clears his throat in an attempt to bring back his usual volume ] Hi - Fleeters - if we're still calling ourselves that - Winn Schott here, back to the world of the conscious - if you recognize me check in and tell me how long I've been out - Kitty - you better still be here. [ because unless you call him within the next 10 seconds he's calling you as soon as he cuts this feed and if you're not there he will freak. he rubs at his painted mustache again, not quite realizing what's bothering him, and with a small tired smile fumbles to shut the broadcast off. ]

[ he nods, he definitely knows what that's like. ]

I must do. [ a flicker of a smile -- sardonic, but not unhappy. ] After all, I have it on good authority that my world doesn't end with being swapped up in Zero Matter.

[ he smiles ]

...yeah, it's gotta be nice knowing for a fact you don't accidentally blow the planet up or something.

Oh. I assure you -- I've still managed to muck things up. [ ... ] But it's nice to know it never gets that bad.

Your commiseration is kind, Winn. [ ... ] It's just as well I don't feel like explaining the circumstances, because I'm fairly certain you'd revoke it if you knew.

Trust me, I make my fair share of epic screw ups.

[ just last week he almost got one of his best friends killed by acting like an irresponsible immature nerd, so. ]

Then perhaps it's just as well we won't be swapping notes. Safeguard both our dignities.

[ you know, he's just flattered she thinks he has dignity. ]

And triumphs are way more fun to talk about.

Pity, then, that the Official Secrets Act covers most of mine.

[ light-hearted. a bit of coy pride might do better to cover the festering shame surrounding her future choices. ]

They have mind controlling augments in our brains, I think the secrets are out.

[ he's pretty sure j'onn won't see it that way but hey - kara talked about the deo first? ]

I imagine the noose is impartial to such circumstances. [ still light-hearted though, if you'll believe it. ] Although I imagine I'm already damned what with what you saw when we held hands on that planet -- that one time.

Hey, we're practically colleagues now.

Federal agent to federal agent, hm? [ it's true; he has a point. ] The act referenced refers to my work before I began liaising with America, all the same. Although -- [ oh what the bloody hell. ] Alright. Winn, do you know whether what happened at Bletchley Park was ever declassified?

[ if it was, then the question alone makes the rest painfully obvious. she'd been seeding the clues ever since they'd started their classes together. and she'd begun her ciphers. frankly, she wouldn't be surprised if he'd already guessed. ]

[ the look on his face answers the question for him. ]

Are you serious? You were there? Oh my god - do you know Alan Turing? Every computer nerd on the planet owes that man our everything - and winning the war was great too, of course, not discounting that or anything - [ BUT FANBOY MODE ACTIVATED. ] oh my god working there has to be the coolest thing ever -

Turing? [ she hesitates; here's an unanticipated turn. ] We may have passed each other in the hall, certainly. I do remember some poor fresh recruit [ cough cough peggy carter cough ] accidentally 'borrowed' the Prof's mug on her third day in the huts. He kept it chained to the radiator after that.

[ a huff. ] Bizarre. But utterly brilliant.

[ do you see the look on his face, peggy? that's what pure joy looks like. he looks like he's about to start bouncing in excitement and doesn't seem to know what to do with his hands anymore, it's a good thing the video cuts him off so she's not subjected to all his odd gestures. for the first time since learning about the drama he's woken up to, winn manages to push it out of his mind and be actually happy and excited. ]

He really did that - [ in a happy higher pitch that proves her story is a confirmation, not new information. ] you don't - you probably don't know the half of it. The work he did there, is why my life has a purpose. If computers didn't evolve the way they did - who knows what I'd be doing right now. I could've been an actor - [ he was always a theater geek. ] oh my god, Bletchley Park, that's so awesome -

[ it's infectious; she smiles. it's strangely elating to hear someone talk about bletchley with so much verve and curiousity. quite apart from her trepidation about the ssr and shield and its doomed fate, winn's reaction to this earlier chapter in her life stirs an old pride -- like the impetus that drove her to join up in the first place. ]

Truth be told, I never realized what happened there in Bletchley would ever pass into common knowledge. So strict were our orders and oaths. In retrospect, it makes sense -- everything we've been doing in our lessons has reminded me in dribs and drabs of that work. [ and by extension she knows she betrays the very real likelihood that she's been playing coy with her understanding this whole time. secretive is as secretive does. ]

[ and it's very nice for him to see her smile like that, to know that he's capable of making her smile like that. it's also very nice for him to have someone he can share his enthusiasm with. the deo is great, but the focus there is on the present and future. ]

Orders change fast, one day you're helping track down and contain an alien, the next he's your buddy and colleague.

[ he shrugs with that smile still on. ]

It's where a lot of the basic logic comes from. What you did there, it changed the world in more ways than you can imagine. [ and he is just...so grateful. he doesn't care that her world isn't his, that maybe in his there was no peggy carter. anyone who took part in that enterprise is someone he admires. ]

Thank you, Peggy, on behalf of all the nerds who I guarantee you worship the ground you walk on in your future for being a part of that, thank you.

Good Lord. [ -- and there's the predictable return of her more staid self, although the glimmer of her smile hasn't quite evaporated. ] I certainly hope not. I was never in it for the glory. [ ... ] Adventure, on the other hand.

[ so it's no wonder that bletchley park's huts couldn't hold her forever. field service called to her. and, in time, she'd answered. ]

You have no idea how many times I fantasized about being recruited as a kid solving stuff.

[ both because like a lot of kids - he dreamed of adventure, and because he really wanted an escape from his life. ]

You may not have been a child when it happened, Winn, but you did end up recruited. And I imagine it was on the strength of you...solving stuff, [ hah ] as you put it.
