So I know I'm not the only one here who can boast both some experience and frustration with alternate worlds, dimensions, timelines, so on and futzing so forth. [ kate hits the network like she hits the ground: running. no hello, no hi, no how-do-you-do. ]

But, uh, I figured it might be good to gather some intel from people outside my little social circle. Personally, I've counted no fewer than six different versions of home. Including mine, but not including any other generally Earth-based worlds. I'm talking we had mutual acquaintances in common, but details were...different. Shout out to anyone who can identify me a seventh. It's like Pokemon at this point: gotta learn'em all.

What about the rest of you? Are other worlds a thing where you're from? A fact of life? Or are they pretty much the stuff of sci-fi -- culty, but soon to be a blockbuster reboot on a big screen near you?

[ -- and with that, she kicks back and waits to discuss the existential can-o-worms she just opened. part of it is almost masochistic, because she knows how little she doesn't want to learn about yet another world where the avengers exist, but she doesn't.

to take her mind off things, kate heads for her shift at málum over on the iskaulit. but something's...off, tonight. usually a paragon of coordination and balance, she's been breaking a lot of glasses tonight. futz, that's gonna come out of her pay. it puts her in a foul mood, so patrons can expect a bit of petulant surliness with their drinks. ]

Wait, you mean... Steve was a superhero?

[He sits up a little straighter, and he's got a bit of a nervous laugh stuck in his throat - ]

Um, either he's a lot more humble than I thought, or this - this doesn't sound like common knowledge.

It's common knowledge. Trust me. In both my world and the one where this guy's from -- though the version of him knocking around the fleet seems way more chill than Cap from back home. Cap back home is kind of a hardass.

I'm sorry, I'm still - he's -

[Stefan takes a moment to rub his temples and try and process all of this. Peggy's utter dork of a boyfriend is actually a world-renowned, bonafide superhero?? Never, ever in a million years would Stefan have guessed.]

Wow. I don't think I would've ever pegged him as the world-saving type.

-- Really? He's, like, the hero. He spent years and years leading the Avengers. Or he did back home. I think the group here are a little greener. It's weird to think I've clocked more Avenging hours than they have.

[ ... ] I first met him when I was eleven -- not just him, but the whole roster at the time. They showed up while I was trying to dodge these no-good thugs trying to make a quick ransom. [ that's not what happened at all. kate doesn't lie about much, but she knows this version of events is easier swallowed. ] I can still remember the sound his shield made when it knocked the dude out who was chasing me.

[He sits up straighter, suddenly humbled by what he's hearing. While he's never thought of Steve as a superhero - blame it on his world's insistence on teenagers with attitude - he certainly doesn't doubt it either.]

Wow. [He lets out a small breath.] That's - yeah, he would've been a hero for me too. I'm sorry, if I sounded like I was disbelieving, it's just -

He's so down to earth, and honestly, I've never heard him talk about that kind of thing. I guess, uh, there wouldn't be much need since the Fleet's usually so peaceful.

And like I said, their Cap is...different. [ nicer. gentler, almost. if she didn't already respect the legacy, she might've also failed to take him seriously. ] I'd almost feel like an asshole if I tried to backtalk the guy -- he's got those sensitive eyes.

[ a huff. ] Captain America's the one who convinced me I should start trading on the name Hawkeye, actually. The original owner was out of the picture at the time. His bow was just gathering dust.

Plus he's just so kind. It would be like backtalking a puppy.

[His expression softens at her story. Kind seems especially apt in that light.]

I'm glad he did. The name suits you – and there's no law against two people sharing a name.

The world's always been big enough for two Hawkeyes. [ even if it's been harder and harder to trade on that name, these days. ] The other one is here, too, actually. On the First Breath. You might not have noticed him; he's way less pretty than me.

I don't think I've met him yet. [ headtilt. ] Anything else I should look out for?

Clint Barton. Blond, tall, in his 40s. If you meet him and he's staring at your lips it's just because he's probably forgotten his hearing aids that morning.

I can't entirely blame him. They're not always easy to remember.

[Or, you know, stylish. Knowing Cisco and Winn, they've probably done their best...]

Sometimes? I think he 'forgets' them on purpose just to avoid talking to people. [ huff. ] Doesn't work on me, of course. I started learning how to sign the moment I got back to NYC and learned he'd lost his hearing. Someone's gotta be able to yell at him -- silently or otherwise.

At least you're looking out for him. [beat] Though knowing this place, I wouldn't count the telepaths out just yet.

That's fair. I bet Professor Xavier is hella-scary when he yells with his mind. [ ... ] Then again, if it did happen? I doubt it'd be the first time Clint's had an X-Man mad at him.

Seriously? Sounds like he's got enough stories for a couple of lifetimes.

Oh, jeez. Yeah. Clint's been doing the hero thing since back when the Avengers were called Cap's Kooky Quartet. And it was him and Captain America and the Maximoff twins. Years ago.

You've got a hell of a mentor. [ . . . ] Also, Maximoff? Like Pietro Maximoff?

Yeah! Quicksilver. [ kate's head tilts -- and she still harbours a flicker of amusement. ] I know his nephews better than I know him.

Oh. I'm only asking because I made him a pizza once - and I've never seen anyone scarf it down that fast.

[ It was a sight to truly behold. ]

I believe it. [ ... ] Watching a speedster do just about anything is kinda trippy.

[ speedster. not her word, really, but she'd loved it the moment she'd heard cisco use it. ]

Dancing with one is also kind of a pain.

[ but also really, really fun. so's kissing, but she's mum on that. ]

If they dance as fast as they eat, I can imagine. You'd always be four or five steps behind at best.

[ Vampires move fast, sure, but they've never moved that fast. ]

Quicksilver's nephew, now -- there's a guy who can't help but do everything fast. It's like a compulsion. Sometimes he's sends me a text and there's about fifty more to follow up between the original notification and me opening the app.

That's terrifying. Impressive, and probably important in an emergency, but mostly terrifying.

Also? Annoying.
