So I know I'm not the only one here who can boast both some experience and frustration with alternate worlds, dimensions, timelines, so on and futzing so forth. [ kate hits the network like she hits the ground: running. no hello, no hi, no how-do-you-do. ]

But, uh, I figured it might be good to gather some intel from people outside my little social circle. Personally, I've counted no fewer than six different versions of home. Including mine, but not including any other generally Earth-based worlds. I'm talking we had mutual acquaintances in common, but details were...different. Shout out to anyone who can identify me a seventh. It's like Pokemon at this point: gotta learn'em all.

What about the rest of you? Are other worlds a thing where you're from? A fact of life? Or are they pretty much the stuff of sci-fi -- culty, but soon to be a blockbuster reboot on a big screen near you?

[ -- and with that, she kicks back and waits to discuss the existential can-o-worms she just opened. part of it is almost masochistic, because she knows how little she doesn't want to learn about yet another world where the avengers exist, but she doesn't.

to take her mind off things, kate heads for her shift at málum over on the iskaulit. but something's...off, tonight. usually a paragon of coordination and balance, she's been breaking a lot of glasses tonight. futz, that's gonna come out of her pay. it puts her in a foul mood, so patrons can expect a bit of petulant surliness with their drinks. ]

Did I tell you I'm a reporter now?

No way -- what! Kara, that's amazing. What's your beat?

Well, as it is a special interest, mostly alien affairs. Plus, I can source Supergirl for a lot of things. I've also developed a relationship with Lena Luthor, who's the CEO of L Corp, which is like, a huge deal. It used to be LuthorCorp when her brother Lex was running it. Lex is kind of... a mega evil sworn enemy of my cousin. Super anti-alien, bent on world domination sort of thing. But Lena really wants to undo the damage that her brother has done to their name. She's a good person, and she's willing to help me out with stories here and there.

[ladybro]

[ whoa, ok, slow down girl. kate leans forward while she listens -- digesting each new twist with a patient ear. stomach. whatever. that analogy went in the wrong direction.

in the end, however, she's more interested in kara than in the luthors. ] Have you done many stories yet?

A few, yeah. My boss is really grouchy but I think at the end of the day he likes my work.

I hear that. [ or heard that. she doesn't really work for anyone anymore. ] Reporting, though. That's gotta feel good.

It's my calling, and I guess it runs in the family. But it was absolutely a decision I made on my own after a lot of thought. Ms. Grant gave me the opportunity to pursue it.

[ladybro]

I'm so happy for you, Kara. It's a great feeling when you find your niche -- both in and out of the cape.

Thanks, Kate. It feels so good to be helping people both as Kara and as Supergirl.

And -- hey. Reporters and private investigators? Not all that different from one another.

We should be in the same universe! We would be an unstoppable force of gumption and pluck!

Alright, I'll play. Which one of us'll be gumption and which one pluck?

Well, I think we both have both. But you'd be the Gumshoe with gumption and I'd be the plucky reporter.

You'd play by the rules. I wouldn't. It'd be almost sitcom-worthy.

Exactly! Man, we should sell this story.

Minus the Hawkeye and Supergirl bits, right? I mean -- we don't want to overwhelm the audience with our many and varied plots.

Well, yeah. Otherwise it would be too easy to solve our problems.

[ladybro]

[ a snort of laughter. ]

Okay! So -- SoCal, right? You with the office job and me with the seedy agency by the beach. Two independent career women, doing their darnedest to prove themselves in a city hellbent on kneecapping them. [ ... ] Only funnier.

Um, yes. Absolutely.

It would be like New Girl with fewer men and way more murder mysteries!

Well, maybe there can be some guys. [ ... ] But they gotta leave in the morning and heaven help'em if they drink all the coffee.
