[He wasn't expecting a bed. More to the point, he wasn't expecting to wake up at all; did someone wake up when they were dead? He's not sure. Well. At least he doesn't hurt after dying, though John can't remember it hurting much before, either. He sits up anyway, still clad in his continental uniform, now with a mysterious lack of bulletholes. In doing so, he jars the communicator nearby, and it falls to the floor with a clatter.]

Shit, what -- [Oh. Okay. There's a thing on the floor, he's surrounded by mysterious silvery walls, and he's trying not to panic. This is great. Maybe the thing will have some answers. So he picks up the comm and pokes at it, tentatively. That manages to activate the video, and behold, there's one seriously perplexed lieutenant colonel onscreen.]

--Um. Can anyone maybe tell me what the hell is goin' on? Is anyone there?

Yeah, it's a uniform. Uh, I'm John Laurens, of the state of South Carolina; pleased to meet ya. [If he sounds a little proud there, it's for good reason. Statehood is still a new concept for him, ok.]

And the state of South Carolina. [He nods along, but it's the first time he's heard it mentioned. He probably should have studied some maps but he found Netflix first. There are usually a couple people there at the same time. What you're holding is called a communicator - you can use it to contact everyone in the fleet - which is what you did, you're gonna get more call backs, or you can contact just one person, the way I contacted you. You see at the top where there's my name? When you're choosing to make a broadcast you'll have a field like that where you can choose public, or a specific person. You have three options with it - video means people can see you, audio hear you, and text is well, written text. The comm lets you talk to people who aren't in your immediate surrounding, like me - I'm on another ship, called the Tourist.

[He's barely even heard of California, though he might know it as a colony of Spain at this point.]

Yeah, it is. One'a what used to be the colonies.

[ He doesn't have the engineered perfection of a Unioner -- doesn't act like one either -- but that doesn't mean Signy's about to lower her guard around him.
