[hey everyone! how's it been going? how's medieval-fun-time-world treating you? anyone pillaged and burned anything yet? got kicked out of the castle? been planning expeditions? registered for jousting? busy angsting for the last two weeks on your ship?

this is a mingle for everybody, whether they're hiding in the volcano, out and about in the city, or up on one of those random random stations where you can get quirky souvenirs.]

[she's... used to it. so, she takes a seat across from him, politely folding her old-timey skirt underneath her.]

I asked, um, if you were from the Fleet.

[Oh, he got it that time, though he does have to lean forward a bit.]

Ah. Yes, I am. And given the question, you are as well?

[He's still smiling, but a level of the artificial charm drops out of it now that he knows he's not entertaining a potential client]

Yessir. [she is not trying particularly hard to be charming, so neither should he--] I thought I recognized you, yeah.

Are you actually a fortune teller, or are you just doing it for the show?

[Felix doesn't really have to try to be charming, but when he does it shines forward by degrees of magnitude. The smile he gives her is a simple thing, but full of a brightness he carries with him on his good days. He's pleased at the idea of being recognized, too. He hasn't stood out in a crowd in quite a while.]

Admittedly, it's the latter. I've had some experience in reading cards in the past, but that was with a deck that was enchanted by a previous owner who himself was trained in divination. [He nods forward in a more conspiratorial whisper]

I hope you'll forgive me the charade.

[oh, she likes secrets. even little ones, dumb ones. so she smiles a little herself, shrugging.]

Eh, it's okay. If I was better at the whole people thing I would totally be doing the same thing. Which...

[she looks up, for a moment, thinking...] Are you a... mage?

Wizard. Yes. [The correction is without heat. Just a knee-jerk correction to terminology he's had to make what seems like a thousand times and he doesn't fault her for it. It doesn't really matter, but a small part of him clings to it]

[He smiles at her gently and sets the cards down] Do you know something about divination?

Wizard, sorry... [there are so many magical people around here who don't fit into the five or six groups that she understands... so she at least seems willing to make the correction.]

I kinda do. I used to have a couple of friends who were into that kind of thing.

[He smiles in acknowledgement of her correction. Most people don't see the difference and act dismissive when he mentions it.]

Do you mean the type aided with magic, or the other kind?

[well mages ARE traditionally more evil.]

Uh, the magic kind. The other kind is just tricking people, isn't it?

That depends on who you ask, I suppose. But since there is a world of difference between the two, I'd say that's essentially the truth.

[Maybe the mundane version has some merit, but Felix figures there has to be far less accuracy]

Does magic interest you?

[being asked that gets her to smile a little and wiggle her feet.]

Oh, yeah. It's really cool. They don't have a lot where I'm from, so...

[It still manages to strike him from time to time whenever people react to magic positively, or show an interest in it. It was either mundane by the standards of wizards or a subject a fear to most others he encountered, in varying degrees. He gives Krista a tiny, pleased smile and folds his hand on the top of the crate.]

Is that so? What is your experience with it in your world? What is it like?

Uuum, well...

[unfortunately, not so good... she folds her arms, obviously thinking of how to explain it, and also carefully deciding how much about herself she wants to admit right off the bat.]

It's mostly a big secret where I'm from. Normal people aren't supposed to know about it, because they go crazy or, you know, try to kidnap magic users to do science experiments or use them as weapons or... Jail them because they can't be controlled, or whatever.

So not a whole lot is known about it. I kinda only just stumbled upon it recently.

[The answer clearly doesn't surprise him in the least, however, and he nods somberly]

That is not a story that is completely unique to your world, unfortunately. Other people have told me similar things in the past. It seems that, for any world in which magic exists there are three possible outcomes in terms of acceptance. Either it dominates, it is forced into hiding, or it is persecuted. Or some combination of those, I suppose.

Oh, that's a bummer. [she frowns a little, slumping forward onto the crate...]

I guess it's too much to hope for a world where everyone can just hang out and be chill.

[He chuckles] Sadly, yes. Conflict seems to be inherent in the fabric of life. I have not yet heard of such a utopia. We must do our best to get along with those we can. [The smile her offered her managed to speak louder than his words had]

I'm Felix, by the way.

I'm Krista.

[she reaches over the makeshift table for... a handshake. not ladylike, but that's what she learned how to do... her opinion of him is pretty good, with him saying all of that, so she smiles too.]

So can I get you to do my fortune?

[Even ladies shake hands where he comes from]

Your fortune? [He goggles a bit, fingering the edge of the cards]

I...suppose I could...as long as you're not expecting any real truth. As I said, it's merely a charade.

Yeah, sure! I'll even pay you for it. I just want the, uh, medieval fun-time experience, I guess.

[she leans forward. looks expectant. she's never actually done this before, even if it's totally fake and silly.]

You'd probably do better elsewhere. [A self-depracating but true admission, but he slides the cards over to Krista anyway]

Shuffle these then. It doesn't matter how many times, only until it feels right.

[It's what Mavortian had taught him, though with the Syblline that feeling that been more tangible, at least to another wizard. Something electric in the fabric of them.]

Nah.

[she takes the cards... and isn't super good at shuffling, but she manages just enough dexterity to not make a fool out of herself.]

This is... The part where I awkwardly shuffle these for like a million years...

[...but she actually shuffles it less than some of his other paying customers, for sure. she stops at a point that feels... okay. maybe not right, but she doesn't want to be here all day. she holds them back out for him!]

[He's the last one to throw stones about her shuffling. He manages, but that's about it.

Felix takes the cards with a smile, the picture of patience.]

All right. Now, it's best if you ask a question you'd like answered, since I'm working with a simple three card layout at the moment. It's generally the most simple. Now, you can ask simply what your future, but the more vague the question the more vague the answer.

[It's probably going to be vague regardless]
