[hey everyone! how's it been going? how's medieval-fun-time-world treating you? anyone pillaged and burned anything yet? got kicked out of the castle? been planning expeditions? registered for jousting? busy angsting for the last two weeks on your ship?

this is a mingle for everybody, whether they're hiding in the volcano, out and about in the city, or up on one of those random random stations where you can get quirky souvenirs.]

[he catches that, and the look on his face is that you just gave him christmas in the form of a stick.]

... Oh, I am so ready for this.

[ --aha ]

Don't get too excited, you don't know what we're doing yet.

Do you know how to meditate?

Yep. Got that down.

[ino's been teaching him ninja meditation and he figures it's the same thing all the way around.]

Tell me how you meditate, then.

Uhh. Sit down, clear your mind, focus on the flow of energy in your body? Try to manipulate it into doing what you tell it to?

[That last part might be strictly ninja, he's not sure.]

Well, you're right...

[ riku looks like he's considering it, before he reaches out and gives hiro a tap on the head with his rod, smirking. ]

But you're wrong, too. There's no one way to meditate--everyone's different, and life isn't black and white.

You've done stuff so many times it's like breathing, right? You don't even have to think.

[ he turns to a tree and exhales before inhaling deep and closing his eyes. he does a series of practiced thrusts and pivots, a block or two peppered within it--all of his strikes hit the tree with a sharp crack. he breathes out rhythmically, like he's not even making much effort. when he pauses, he straightens and looks to hiro again. ]

I couldn't tell you all the moves I just did--it's muscle memory. In a battle, you don't have time to find your center, so you've gotta be able to on your feet. Get it?

[he's relating this advice back to his own adventures in combat, and his training with ino and cass so far here. at home, he didn't have time to plot--it had to be on the fly. with his training thus far, he's been very careful and deliberate; he needs to get comfortable enough to abandon his reservations.]

Alright... Yeah, makes sense.

[kind of looking at riku like "damn you're good though".]

[ ... what's that look for?

riku awkwardly looks away and scratches his cheek before he moves farther into the clearing. ]

I'm gonna teach you four stances and one routine, but from there, you can do your own thing. Fighting's all about adapting to your enemy quick. Figure out what you're good at, and build on it. We'll start with this, and we can try spells a little later.

[ he turns when he's about at the edge of the clearing, and then tilts his head. ]

Last chance to back out.

You couldn't pay me to.

[he looks so ready for this. i'm so sorry, riku, you caught the attention of one very very determined kid.]

So, about these stances.

[ he gives a nod.

well, fine, hiro. your funeral. he holds up a closed fist, flicking his fingers up when he counts them off. ]

Block, strike, parry, and counter.

Block's easy. [ he twists his rod and holds it in both of his hands, presenting a firm ground. ] It's not always that simple, but it works when you're learning. Strike's pretty easy too, [ he moves his hand away, using it one handed to slice through the air, the end of the wooden rod landing right beside hiro. ] no matter what, most people know what a strike is, if they've seen any kind of movie.

Parry and redirect are different. Parry, that's when you deflect someone's strike, and counter is when you use an enemy's strength against them.

[ he straightens, and then takes a step back. ]

Come at me--strike.

[he's quietly studying him the whole time he talks, moving his hands to very vaguely imitate his stances--feet too! But then Riku strikes at the ground next to him and he jumps to the side a few inches; at least his reflexes are good.

[he looks down at his hands, and then back up at riku.

[oh, boy. this is gonna hurt, isn't it?]

... Alright. Here goes nothing..!

[fuck it. he mimics the way riku struck at him, going one-handed like he did to swing it.]

[ ooh--well, the good thing is that there's strength behind that strike.

bad thing is that he can tell hiro's off-center. when the strike connects, riku veers hiro's blow to the side with his own rod. energy is redirected. ]

That's a parry. And nice try, but you're out of balance. [ he takes a step to the right and then nods to him. ] Try again. Try two-handed.

Whoa--!

[he manages to not... fall down or drop the weapon, but not without some exaggerated movements. he centers himself a little better, lifts the rod a few times, and then tries again two-handed. this one is a little too much like a baseball swing, though.]

Whoa--

[ riku has to counter this one and he finds it a little difficult--but he does manage to have a firm ground and blocks it with two hands. he brings his rod in a slow arc towards hiro, and then past him, to use that energy he's pressing down on riku against him. the force should send hiro on his ass, but hiro's smart--maybe he centered himself well enough that he'll just skid back. ]

This isn't the Little League.

[he does skid, but he also kind of... wobbles, and falls forward. he catches himself on one knee, and looks up, a little... surprised at himself.]

... S-sorry. New to this.

[But he hops right back up.]

Let me... [He trails off, but he's bringing his weapon back up. He's out of range of Riku, and just kind of getting a feel for how the swing should go.]

I know you are.

[ he gives him a nod, and raises his hand as if to tell him to stop. ]

That was to show you what a parry and counter was... and to see how well you work under pressure.

[ which... well, they've got work to do. hiro wouldn't have asked to be trained if he knew everything, after all. ]

Need a second to get your bearings?

[he lowers the rod, studying him while he talks, and then... he just takes a deep breath, hands tightening around the rod.]

No, I'm ready.

[this is just like with ino's training, or cass's. he can't panic.]

[ there's a moment of hesitation, and riku's stance softens. ]

... do they have yin and yang where you're from?

... [he makes a face that says "yes" and also "i'm an idiot aren't i"]

[ a snort. ]

Calm down, I'm not testing you this time.

[ he sobers. ]

Part of my power comes with being able to feel how people are--to sense them. [ it's his turn to study hiro. ] It's not like I can read your mind or anything... but--you've been though a lot, haven't you?

[ he hesitates before he goes back into a stance. ] Anything that happened to you--good or bad, you can use it as your armor. Don't be afraid to use the bad things with the good, alright? Yin yang--you can't have a darkness without a light.

[that, though. that breaks down hiro's upbeat, excitable exterior in seconds. what's left in front of him is a kid who looks... maybe a little older than he should. this is the face of someone who's lost. the face of a survivor of tragedy. a mourner. and then...

[he takes a deep, slow breath, and then gets back into stance again. when his shoulders fall from the breath and his eyes open, there's a determination that riku will probably recognize. hiro isn't just someone who survived. he flourished. and just because those wounds have been reopened recently doesn't mean he can't continue to do so.]

... Alright. I'm ready.

[ yeah.

he could tell. riku looks at him with a kind expression--not pitying, not sorry, but like a friend. riku won't make any grandoise lies about knowing exactly what hiro went through--because he doesn't. he won't press him to tell him, either. yet, he can feel the grief, the loneliness. it'd be remiss if, when working with spells that deal with emotion, he didn't remind him to use that emotion.

thankfully, hiro'll be safe when he uses it. he doesn't have to worry too much. ]

Okay. Come at me--show me how you think on your feet.

[he reminds himself before he moves that this isn't about whether or not he gets hurt. riku gets it, somehow. he's not going to hurt him, anyway. so he takes those couple of steps forward, lifting the rod higher this time and making his strike a lot more exact. but this is different--he's not striking to strike, he's looking at what riku is doing. he's waiting for his reaction so that he can react to that instead.]

[ the change is palpable--riku parries the strike to his left. his right is left open. ]

Nice energy.

[ just like hiro's being exacting, so is riku. he knows his right side is open, and he hopes that hiro knows how to adapt to that. this is meant to be a learning experience for him, so riku knows he has to tone it down. ]
