[Strange things have been going on recently. You may have noticed notes appearing on your bookmarks or in your cookies that aren't even fortune cookies or written out in the dust on your desk—you should really clean that. They include:

"Mon-El and Kara are cousins."

"Kara dyes her hair."

"Mon-El glitterbombs his enemies."

"Kara is, like, really old."

But it hasn't kept the couple from being extremely cute with each other. His communicator kicks on for what can only be Atroma-related reasons as they walk hand-in-hand into the Goldstone's cargo bay.]

So, Princess Bride again tonight?

As you wish!! I mean, we could branch out, but you really can't top it for quality.

[He laughs.] Seventh time is the charm? Or are we on sixth? [He leans in, ready to kiss her when something catches his eye—a crate with his name on it.] What’s that?

How should I know? It has your name on it. Do you have a secret admirer now?

Maybe. I am a very good bartender. [Smiling as he walks over to it and without so much as a crowbar, he flips it open easily despite it being obviously nailed shut. Reaching in he pulls up a handful of condoms. He doesn’t notice the note.]

[Kara laughs. Not like a ha-ha-funny laugh but she's really taken off guard.] Um. Well that's… useful? I guess? How good a bartender are you?

If I’m this good I need a raise.

[Kara raises her eyebrows and notices something distinctly not-condom-like fall from the crate and goes to pick it up]

What’s that?

[She takes a moment to read it for herself before reading it aloud with a skeptical voice] "Mon-El and Natasha had sex."

[Mon-El’s eyes widen, but before he can reply the video cuts out. You’ll have to call in for the details.]

Very tempting, but I'm not sure it would be very compelling revenge to him.

[ she huffs ]

I know, Kate. I'm not— I don't... Maybe we can get a drink later.

I can take a bottle back to the Blameless. We can have a sleepover -- I'm talking hair-braiding and too much sugar and the whole works.

Yeah, good. I'll get some of the super stuff.

[ mon-el will just have to cash in his friends-chip at a later date. ]

Now we're talking. How does 8ish sound?

Yeah, sure. Thanks, Kate.

[ she's probably going to go lay on her face for awhile before showing up at the agreed upon time with her own personal bottle of super strength liquor ]

[ although this certainly isn't the first time kara's visited, our intrepid narrator decides right about now is as good as time as any to describe her room on the blameless. having a room of her own aboard the ship is still relatively novel -- the crew had spent so long sharing one group dorm -- and so she's gone to some lengths to spruce up the place. as rooms go, kate's is relatively sparse except for some carefully chosen and lush flourishes. for example, she's hung dark purple netting, like a canopy, from the ceiling above her bed. the blankets and pillows are all a plush heathered grey. her modest locker-space seems to almost be bursting with more clothing than it can handle. and, in the corner, there's a pillow thick with dog hair. lucky's roost, it seems, whenever he's in kate's care.

kate's hatch is open when kara arrives -- and she's sitting sideways on the small bed, legs dangling over the edge. for her part, she's got a bottle of schnapps. the flavour is undetermined, but sweet and styled after some alien fruit. ]

Grab a seat. [ she nods to the space on the bed beside her. ] Tell me all about it.

[ she sighs and plops down]

I don't know what else there is to say, really.

Say it anyway. Get your emotions out with your words and uncork that bottle and only afterwards can we get down to letting it scab over.

Look, it's not that I care that Mon-El has slept with people ever. He's a Daxamite, it's practically their national sport. Hell, I've walked in on him before. And I know it was before we were together. But I talked to Natasha about liking him! And she just let me. She already treats me like I'm a young airhead, and I'm sure this didn't help.

I know it doesn't help, but...I'm pretty sure Black Widow treats everyone like young airheads. [ kate shakes her head. ] I guess you gotta ask yourself what you think her motive was in not telling you. Either she didn't think it mattered, or she was trying to spare your feelings, or she withheld it maliciously.

And Romanoff is a lot of things, sure, but I don't think that last one would be accurate.

She doesn't think it matters, but I do. I know I'm not entitled to her sex life, and I don't want to know that much about it, but Mon-El should have mentioned it.

Can you take a stab in the dark as to why he didn't mention it?

[ kate can, but she figures kara's better off doing the legwork herself. ]

I'm not sure any of the reasons I can think of make it better.

[ kate cracks open her bottle of schnapps and takes a swig. ]

It's not about finding excuses. It's about finding explanations.

[ she sighs, following suit with her own liquor, taking a moment before responding ]

If he could keep that from me so easily, what else is he keeping from me?

What makes you think it was easy? [ and then, just to cover her own ass: ] For the record, I didn't know about any of this. Just -- maybe he wanted to tell you, but he was scared you might give up on him because of it.

I'm not "giving up". And we could have actually talked about it earlier.

He's terrified of losing you. [ or so he told kate. ] That kind of fear can be hella paralytic.

I know.

I really like him, Kate. Against all odds. But really liking someone only gets you so far, especially when you're as different as we are. I can't make decisions about my life based on what he's a afraid of.

No, I agree, but maybe you can help him be a little less afraid of it?

[ because as good as it is to stay above it all -- independent -- if kara's really truly into him? kate doesn't see the benefit in letting him stay terrified he might take a wrong step. mess it up. that kind of thing is death to romance. ]

By being less of a crazy girlfriend?

Did I say that, hun? [ kate tosses an arm around kara's shoulder, tugging her close. ] Look. This, right here, is a teachable moment for your boyfriend. You tell him it's a big deal -- but that he only gets the one freebie, honesty-wise, and that from hereon in you'd be much happier if he just told you these things from the get-go. The relationship is new. So new. This is a moment to establish boundaries, not to consider dumping him for not telling you something he felt he couldn't tell you.

Make it so he wants to tell you, next time.

[ she leans her head on Kate's shoulder and sighs ]

You're right.

I really didn't mean to react so strongly, anyway.

That's not to say you don't dump his ass if it happens again. [ you know, before someone accuses her of being the 'stand by your man' sort. every woman is free to make their own choice on that matter, sure, but kate is definitely not the standin' by type. ]

Or if he doesn't take hella heed of what he's learned from this. Point is, it sounds like he's pretty much a relationship rookie. Maybe he doesn't know what's right and what's wrong. You're the one who's gotta help him learn it.

[ a firm snug. ]

[ takes a swig, staying in this sisterly position ]

I would be shocked if he's ever actually thought about relationships.

And it's not like I have the most storied career, either.
