[ the comm seems to be haphazardly leaning against something, and the image you get is crooked. a sleeping man, who almost instantly awakes with a start. no scream, mercifully, he's quite over screamer videos, and besides, it wouldn't really be that surprising under the circumstances, now, would it? his eyes dart around the room, his feet flying off the cot and touching the ground. the moment he speaks, his accent undeniably and unapologetically identifies him as an englishman. ]

Not again - [ he groans, looking around him. the first time he was knocked out and kidnapped happened because he was foolish, he trusted a friend when clearly he had overestimated the bond, bloody spies, he's had his fill of bloody spies. but this time - he has no idea what happened. one minute, he's in a pod, sailing to freedom and the next - he's in this bed. he must not have deactivated something. do they have a blasted tracker beam on these things? so paranoid! ] Oi, @therealshield, you forgot to paint your eagle - I'm gonna have to deduct your merits - [ no answer. the room really doesn't seem like anywhere his previous captors kept him in, and that's rarely a coincidence. he gets up, and the comm seems to slip off whatever it was leaning against and end up in a new position, one that shows the back of the man, as he walks towards a window. ] ...you have got to be joking.

[ and a moment later ] Bloody aliens!

[ the man comes in and out of the frame, as he's clearly examining his surroundings, before he heads back to check on what he's got by his cot, and notices the comm. picking it up, you now get a close up of his face - ] Little red light - you're either going to explode or - [ that sure looks like a camera, doesn't it? he holds it directly in front of his face. ]

I wouldn't call it a hobby, exactly. One would have to be a terrible masochist to consider captaining a space ship of any sort to be hobbywork.

[ a picture emerges, then. slowly but certainly: agent peggy carter, not yet the steel madam director of what will eventually be shield, has found herself another kind of command. by fluke and by chance, perhaps, more than merit. but the crew is hers, now; she's got a burden of care over the starstruck.

along with her aforementioned first mate, of course. ]

You know -- I actually agree with you on that count. [ she feels so far away from something as wild as co-founding shield -- even if she has started to at least warm up to the idea of fostering talent in others. ]

'Chief' or 'administrator' -- or whatever it is they call the top cheese at SHIELD -- was never part of my career plans.

Director. Or at least, that's the modern lingo, I skipped my SHIELD history.

[ and the academy altogether. it's much easier to become an operative of an illegitimate agency, he must say. ]

I must admit all I know about SHIELD I've learned second-hand.

[ it's an added bonus, but he was simply being truthful. he doesn't bother to correct her, though. ]

SHIELD always did seem overly keen on deception.

[ because make no mistake, the director is the commander. when he's good - he's happy to follow. when it's a council of twats - he's happy to steal their shit and go warn the genuine article. ]

You mean you didn't take a detour into the future before ending up here? You're missing out, it gets particularly colorful around the 60s. [ the fashion, that is. ]

The various Avengers passing through from time to time have offered a lot that's enlightening -- although I understand their perspective on the matter is rather narrow.

[ so, she's averse to saying too much over the network. a little protectionist. ]

[ he's averse to it as well. he's averse to saying too much in general, and he's not sure how he feels about walking in on her home turf.

but then, there's a promise there for great rewards, considering what he's heard of space refreshments. ]

Let's make something abundantly clear here, Peggy - [ he's seen that grimace, and a promise of a real and proper hot cup of tea has put him in a more appeasing mood ] You can put the man in America, but you cannot put the America into the man. Another point on which we certainly see eye to eye. [ innuendo aside. ] Working in across the pond has its benefits, but the normalization of muddy burnt bean water is not one of them.

Nor is having to listen to the mangling of the English language day in and day out.

[ with their absurd slang and 'likes' and 'totallys' littered throughout every other sentence. and they have the gull to say they can't understand him. ]

Seven decades' worth of distance only makes it more egregious. I assure you.

There are few things in this world quite as irritating as being told to speak English by a bumbling idiot with a stupid accent who can't string two words together without creating a grammatical murder scene.

[ shield, he has a very hard time bonding over. but this? this has been building up for a while. fitz keeps to himself and simmons he doesn't really know that well. it's nice to finally have someone to commiserate with. ]

[ peggy's non-subtle dragging of captain america will give tony stark a run for his money. ]

With a code name like Captain America, what do you expect; hero or not they may still banish him if her starts making too much sense.

[ he's not going to be starstruck (ha) at that namedrop, though of course the avengers are exciting acquaintances to make. he knows their stories far better than he does hers. ]

[ frankly, it's appreciated -- there's little peggy tolerates less than the myth and persona of captain america. especially just now, under his current circumstances. ]

I always hated the name. But so it goes: they can't do anything without bloody fireworks, can they?

Must be one of their amendments, who can keep track.

[ it's definitely one think she won't have to worry about with him. he's not really one for myths. ]

Can't argue with their jazz, however. Perhaps the nation's one true redeeming feature.
