002

Who: Seymour and YOU
Broadcast: Yes
Action: Red Fish
When: Late April (sorry for the late...)

[The feed opens on Seymour, obviously struggling to get the communicator to work. It takes him a few good seconds to realize he's live, and he looks a little sheepish as he speaks.]

Um, hey everyone, I have a question. So I was on one of those asteroids the other day, and I think I was talking to myself about something, I dunno. But people kept giving me money and I heard them saying that I was singing? But I wasn't singing at all.

Does singing mean something else down there? I would have just shrugged it off as someone being drunk if it was just one person, but at least five people came up to me just today.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy I have more money now, but I'm kinda freaking out about this.

...I really hope this thing is working right…

((OOC: Anyone who's been around him enough, especially though who are crew members of the Red Fish, should notice that Seymour does in fact break into song when he's talking to himself.))

[Billy clicks his feed on for a moment, then realizes that it's rather silly when they're both on the same ship, and maybe not something Seymour necessarily wants to talk about in front of everyone. So he approaches with his usual awkward smile.]

Hi, I got your message! We haven't really toured the asteroids together, but maybe we can resolve this?

I have heard a male voice singing near the laboratory now and then. It's definitely not Ardyn, it can't be me, and I don't think it's Carl...

Well...yes, sort of. But there are words as well. And words with a musical lilt are singing.

There I thought you actually liked singing to yourself to distract yourself from the vast coldness of space outside.

[He is now smiling rather amused at Seymour's predicament. Did the guy not even know that he sang occasionally? Perhaps, it helped him when he worked?]

One could argue that all language is a song. (The melody and harmony being the chosen cadence of someone's words.) Does it embarrass you?

Oh, you do. I've heard your melodies echoing through the cold interior of our ship many a time.

[He just didn't bother to bring it up because he thought it helped you?]

Many find a way to keep themselves distracted from things they do not wish to think about.

That depends entirely on who might be listening and what information you are imparting.

(Well yes. Even on Arda, teaching is a valued profession.)

You are not forcing anyone to enjoy your words or pay you for what you say. I would enjoy the attention.

(Not him literally. Just...the more universal "I" in the case of that last sentence.)

...well, I've never heard of it happening before, but we're dealing with unprecedented territory. Maybe it's a quirk of your implant?

Perhaps you are singing and do not even know it? A song can come in your heart very suddenly, I have found.

You mustn't think so little of yourself. Everyone has a gift - a talent - he can share with others. (Even if the talent is something more sinister.) Why do you see yourself in such a poor light?

From what I've heard, there's a range of effects. People have gained and lost abilities, years of their lives, spoken language, memories...

[He shudders. That's his least favorite possibility.]

The sponsors should increase your pay for that, at the least.

No, I don't. If you find singing a release for your inner most demons then feel free to express them. These ships can feel quite empty without the usual sounds of humans aboard.

[As in feel free to sing?]

[ Carl happens to catch Seymour's message as he's on his way to the kitchen, though some of it is caught as he makes his broadcast. He hasn't really stopped to get to know the newer members of the ship, but he should. The guy looks pretty harmless, anyway. ]

You didn't mean to sing to yourself?

[ Beth used to sing to herself, or sing for them in the prison. It was nice, so hearing it sometimes, even softly in the halls, felt a little more like home. Even if Seymour didn't exactly want to.. ]

There is no shame in that! Plants need a special touch to thrive. Have you visited the gardens on the Iskaulit?

[Always a 50/50 on if he's the best person to have your corner or not, really. ]

But of course! There's nothing unusual about that.
