Since we seem to have a fair amount of people from worlds where 'super powers' exist, let me ask something for the sake of sating curiosity: power use regulation by government. Thoughts?

Go ahead and respond to this anonymously if you like, I'm just looking for opinions.

[aizawa is almost always in the med bay these days, organizing and reorganizing, writing down what looks like curriculum and schedules and trying to brush up on his mathematics.

on the rare occasion that he's not on the starstruck, he can be found on any of the asteroids with shops, looking for...a tuxedo. or an approximation of one, anyway. he doesn't seem very enthusiastic about it, but it's hard to find something in a humanoid shape that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.]

Pretty sure I can't say I don't believe in powered people after being on this fleet!

[well, that's fair.] Not that there's exactly a government HERE to regulate anybody. Just that most people I've spoken to have been in the camp of 'it's a terrible idea.'

Not saying it's not a terrible idea. Coming from a world where the population I don't think could stop a powered person, I was more curious how you would even think about enforcing those who didn't agree to regulation by the government. As there will usually be at least a few.

I think it's too broad an idea. How would you decided what's okay and what's not? Unless maybe everyone has the same abilities?

I don't think it's necessary for everyone to have the same abilities; common sense law applies. Murder, assault, destruction or theft of property, inciting public unrest, reckless endangerment, so on and so forth; those things would be illegal, however they're instigated.

Honestly, where I'm from, quirks have become so intrinsic to the individual that it's less a matter of 'power regulation' and more a case of 'proper public governance.'

Well, yes common sense laws should be applied. Doesn't matter if you have powers or not. But the original question seemed specific for those who have powers. As long as it's not breaking those common laws then I don't see the need to regulate.

In the case of my world, at least, it does. Or at least, it can't be ambiguously stated or assumed.

Why does it need to be regulated where you're from?

Our society came into powers very abruptly, and when there was no regulation in place things were pretty chaotic. Individual people might be capable of policing themselves through morals, but groups are unintelligent and crowds are stupid. As more people developed powers, legislation became necessary.

[goldenglasses]

[There's a pause and some typing that's then deleted as Vash tries to get his thoughts together.] Do you have an example of what type of registration was needed that wasn't covered by laws that were already in place?

[expellerhead]

It's true that 'don't commit murder' might be pretty plain and simple, but legislature is hardly ever that straightforward. A lot of laws were amended with specific verbiage to include quirk-related incidents. Manslaughter, for example: was it committed due to recklessness with their quirk, or from lack of training? One offense is more punishable than another.

Most cases are like that, but there are a few laws specifically for quirks. Generally, public quirk usage is discouraged. The more disruptive your quirk is, the more important it is for you to keep it to yourself. If you have telekinesis and can use it to stop yourself from dropping your coffee that's fine, but something like shooting up a firework to tell your friends where you are isn't acceptable because of the disturbance it causes. Simply saying 'don't cause a disturbance' doesn't work, because what counts as a disturbance to one person or even a group of people might not to another group.

It's pretty complicated. Lawyers have it rough.

Ouch. Yeah, I can see what you mean. Probably not great for traffic if everyone could start setting off fireworks in the middle of the street.

I think I'm glad I'm not a lawyer on your world. I don't feel qualified to begin to ask those sorts of questions and issues.

It's definitely a challenge. Police forces and the justice department don't get the credit they deserve.

Seems a common thing then. The sheriffs get little thanks back home either. And they just have non-powered humans to deal with.

[Okay, some have used technology to enhanced themselves, but nothing like what he's seen on the Fleet.]

Public safety is usually taken for granted. It's easy to let yourself fall into a false sense of security.

I suppose it can be. [Security is a bit hard to come by where he's from.] Making it so people can take it for granted usually isn't easy.

No...you're right on that count. That kind of peace does always come at a price.

And I'm glad I don't have to be the one to decide what's right and wrong at that front. Way too big thinking for me.

You don't seem that adverse to big thought, but suit yourself.

I'm just not that good at it most of the time. [That's a lie. He just prefers to be seen as an easy going at time brainless guy.]
