I know that people here come from all sorts of walks of life, but I’m wondering who else has a military background. It seems like there are some things we’d be able to help each other with.

If you can, list your rank, name, and the nature of the service.

For myself it’s Captain, Signy Mallory, and it was a space ship, close to a thousand personnel under my command.

Some of you may be aware of the fact that I was a ship’s Captain where I come from, and I have my ideas about how to run a ship now that I'm Captain of this one. I keep a tight hold on my crew, and if you disobey my orders — of which there will be more than you’re likely accustomed — you will face discipline.

If that’s likely to be a problem for you, you’re welcome to take a transfer to another ship. In fact, I would encourage you to.

[Oh, good. Lumiére is an expert in evading people who expect their rules to be followed without question. He's had decades of experience. If Cogsworth can't get him to do something he doesn't want to, then no one has a chance.]

I may be wrong here, ma cherie, but perhaps an aggressive approach might not be the best way to endear the crew to you. Especially given it has only been a short time since we lost Jennifer.

I want to build us into a cohesive crew that's capable of survival. That's what's important right now.

Surviving...what? We are not at war here, ma cherie. It has to be better to get along with everyone here than alienating the crew. That's important, no? We are living in a very small space together, after all.

If you're generally dissatisfied with how you think I'll run the ship, then like I said, you're welcome to go. If you plan to stay then I intend to make us a crew, rather than a motley assortment of people. I think it's better to be upfront about these things.

I'd like to get non-security crew members trained up in hand-to-hand and individual weaponry. Are you capable of assisting in that?

I'm not leaving just because I'm 'welcome to.' A number of us were here before you arrived. Your definition of a crew doesn't match up with whatever we are, but that's not entirely your call to change it.

[While she certainly is, she feels the need to clarify.] Lumiere doesn't have hands.

What was the European Air Force like?

[ She assumes it's an Earth based force, but there are so many different times people are from that it doesn't pay for Signy to get too attached to her assumptions. ]

I was a captain in the Sylvaranti army some four thousand years ago, until a former knight of the opposing army convinced me that the war we were fighting was destroying the world and I abandoned my post.

[He doesn't look like he's joking, but he does look like he's pretty much daring her to take a shot at him for that background.]

Is that four thousand years ago by your own reckoning?

It is. I don't have any other way of reckoning time, so I can't say what it would be relative to anyone else's. Do humans live for about a century, give or take a decade or two, where you come from?

Is Guardian a primarily defensive army?

Thought you might. Everything's vastly different now. Back home, I mean. I'll try to clarify.

[ Hopefully without getting too personal. She does not want to talk about herself much, thank you. ]

Guardian's an individual title given to certain people. What's essentially any form of military force is now is called the Vanguard. We protect the very last of what's left of Earth, and push back alien forces on other planets where humanity used to have colonies. So, yeah, mostly defensive, but occasionally offensive. If necessary.

I got a military background, but it ain't a normal one. Don't got a rank, but my name's Doudanuki Masakuni and I'm a war sword that's served daimyo and samurai alike.

[ War sword sounds rather like a rank of sorts to her, but she remembers seeing his broadcast shortly after her arrival, so she doesn't need more detail on that. ]

Were you held to military discipline?

Not in the usual sense for people. I was a sword, but a lot of my masters were either generals or soldiers so they influenced how I turned out.

I hold myself to their ideals.

[Eleanor can't help but eye the broadcast suspiciously. It's not that the authoritative presence makes her uncomfortable on principle, but she's had too many poor experiences in the last year to treat this anything less than cautiously.]

I'm grateful that you're taking your position so seriously, but I think it's important that you proceed with care. While I don't have any issues following your orders at the moment, I won't hesitate to act against you if it's what I feel is right. I know most of the others on the ship think the same.

If what I ask you goes against what you feel is right, please don't hesitate to inform me. I don't seek to be wholly unreasonable, and I understand there's some difficulty to be expected in this transition.

[Felix's face when he turns on his comm device is neutral, maybe a little contemplative. He and the military may have parted on terms that were not the best, but after all the stuff that's happened in the Fleet lately, this might be good knowledge to have.]

I'm not currently in the service, but I do have a military background. Felix Gaeta. I was a lieutenant with the Colonial Fleet. I was a tactical officer aboard a Battlestar spaceship [Like the name 'Battlestar' doesn't hint at what kind of vessel that might be. Specificity is good, though.] The job included navigation as well as tactics.

[ there's something about this place, with its various inhabitants from all sorts of timelines, that makes Signy appreciate others with experience serving on a starship a little more. Maybe it's the direct applicability, or just the similarity with her own background. Maybe it's that none of these people remind her of Union's azi. ]

Basics - space ship, about four hundred crew, long term mission to discover and explore new areas of space, find new life, and either protect or invite trade with said life. We could also be called upon to defend Federation Space as necessary from a variety of threats.

Currently, I'm the captain of the Tourist.
