[Strolling along one of the nicer asteroids, pleasantly full from a meal large enough that it may have worried the restaurant owners. He is walking side by side with Kara and while it still doesn't seem real that Winn is just gone, he's having a pretty good day with the woman he loves. He's smiling at her when he notices a store with toys in the display window and stops.]

Oh, let's go in there.

I didn't really know all of you yet. I hadn't been out of my cell long and I was trained not to give away my title if I was ever captured. [All true. Maybe even good points even if they sound so hollow to him now all these months later. He could mention her reaction just knowing he was anyone from Daxamite but he doesn't. He won't.]

But the biggest reason was just that [Breath a little shaky.] I wasn't proud of surviving when the rest of my people didn't.

[ she holds back an unkind comment about that maybe being for the best ]

Then how did you escape?

My guard. I was scared. I had no idea what to do and he just pulled me along as people called out for help and just followed. He took the pod from the ambassador. He shot him. And he got me inside and I just...let it all happen. [Every word looks pained from the expression on his face, but he doesn't want to lie anymore or twist things to his benefit. It's the truth as cleanly as he can provide it. He was terrified in that moment and he wanted to do more, but he didn't know where to begin. He liked the idea that he might have let the guard go in his place. Or just let the ambassador have his ship of course or the help the girl he was with or any number of people already on the ground, but he didn't. He let himself get pulled along because it meant he had a chance. And it isn't like he was entirely clear headed at the time either. When was he ever on Daxam.]

[ she brings her hand up to her face a la the icon. she's at a loss. she's furious, of course. she wants to be mad about the ambassador, and she is, but that seems a little silly at this point. he wouldn't have had anything to come home to ]

[He sees her hurting and it's probably the worst thing he could do in the moment, but he reaches out instinctively to comfort her, putting a hand on her shoulder.] Kara, I'm sorry.

[ she pulls away and puts her hands up. se doesn't mean to but it's where she is at the moment ]

[He withdraws his hand and nods, absolutely looking like he might cry, but he's doing his best not to because she's the one dealing with all of this for the first time. He doesn't want it to be something she needs to comfort him over. And he doesn't want to find out if she wouldn't.] Anything you need.

[He could tell her how isolated her felt as a child. How he loved his parents but he was afraid of them too. He could talk about the way he kept himself so drugged he never had to think about the awful things he saw around him that he couldn't change. But he shakes his head.] Just that you mean everything to me, and I never wanted to hurt you. I'm a better person with you than I've ever been in my life. I'm sorry I lied, and I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner. I didn't want to lose you. [And she made her feelings on the royal family clear many times. The prince was "the worst of the worst."]

I'm going to go back to the Fleet. We will talk about this again. I just can't right now.

[ she's not breaking up with him…yet. she still feels badly enough—and lonely enough—not to repeat their last fight ]

[He's not sure if "this isn't like the other thing" means it's much, much worse or if he should be hoping for something more positive. He's also afraid to ask. He's used up enough bravery today, so he nods.]

I'll be ready to talk whenever you are. [He hates putting her through this now with Winn gone, but was there ever going to be a good time to hurt her? Wasn't it always going to be a little worse every day he waited? Or was everyone wrong? Would the Atroma have let him keep this secret? Maybe someday he would have been able to forget too.]
