[ another month; another mingle. but there are changes in the air! the starstruck has some fresh crew to boast of, as well as a spiffing new lounge. things have been difficult, lately -- the common area might make for a great place to decompress and socialize with your fellow starstruckers.

after all, it seems the captain's gone and requisitioned max's record player. for the first week in june, it'll be returned again and again to the new lounge. good luck hiding it from her, rockatanksy.

Well, why do you think I transferred over here?

[He grins at her over the rim of his mug of coffee. Look, he can't leave Steve unsupervised.]

You saying there's not enough trouble for you on the Heron? [Natasha snorts softly, amused.] Yeah, I can see that. Steve's a little higher maintenance than Barnes that way.

[Or it's a different kind of maintenance.]

Plus, the two of you were probably just going to bicker the whole time.

If you mean Bucky thinks for ten seconds about the dumb shit he's about to do before he runs off and does it, then, yeah, that's probably lower maintenance than Steve.

[But, really, he'd rather leave Bucky to the people who actually know him.]

My only regret is that I never got the chance to mess with the captain's seat.

[Meaning, yes, they were. You know them well, Natasha.]

That is more or less exactly what I mean, yes. Then he'll probably end up doing it because he's following Steve, but who are we to judge that?

[Steve is a bad influence on all of us.]

Hey, now, I think about things for at least five minutes before I follow Steve into danger.

[When he has the time, anyway.]

We really need to find something better to do with our lives. Something that isn't saving Steve's bacon all the time.

If I waited that long, I'd spend all my time running damage control.

[Look what happens when she's not with Steve to nudge him into better decisions. Or remind him about subtlety.

It's a mess.]

I'd like to believe Peggy would help him have a little better judgment, but I think he learned half of the bullshit he pulls from her.

She seems like something else, that's for sure.

[He likes Peggy, but from what he's seen so far, he doesn't think Natasha's wrong about her. Sam pauses for a moment and takes a sip of his coffee.]

So, they're- [He makes a vague gesture.] You know.

[Not that Steve hasn't told him, but he's sure Natasha has details.]

[Oh, Sam. Sam, you don't know half the details Natasha has. And most of them are about how dumb those two are.]

Oh, Christ, they had better be. [Natasha's tone might best be described as fond exasperation. ] I've invested enough time and energy into those two, they ought to be married at this point.

[A small, considering pause before she continues again. Apparently Sam has landed upon one of the few topics that will get Natasha talking at length and openly.]

You know, when I first got here, they weren't? I thought they were for a couple of weeks before I realized they were dancing around each other, both of them too afraid if they actually got together here they'd be happy and then lose each other again. You've never seen two people more determined to suffer romantically instead of taking their second chance.

[Is this the gossip you were hoping for, Sam?]

[Sam just groans and covers his face with a hand.]

God, Steve, how can you be so fucking stupid?

[Because it's Steve Rogers. They both know the answer to that one.]

Also, if I was with a girl who looked like that? Never mind the history, you'd better believe I'd be tapping that on the regular.

[Which is probably tmi, but what are boundaries? Sam just doesn't know, and he doubts Nat cares.]

So, you think he has any idea what he's actually doing? [Which is the nosiest question in the history of the world, but Sam feels a weird responsibility for Steve. Somewhere along the line, he's apparently decided that Steve needs to know how to pleasure a lady. (Sorry, Steve.)]

[Natasha shakes her head. Finally, someone who understands—and might pick up some of the slack when it comes to helping Steve not make an ass of himself.]

If I was a girl who looked like that, you'd better believe I'd be pissed if my beau wasn't tapping it on the regular.

[Turning the words around on him wryly, mostly to show that he's right; she doesn't care.

As for Sam's question...]

I hope so. Steve is easy on the eyes, but that only goes so far. I might have left a little educational reading in their hotel room a few months back... [And some other fun surprises.] But with him? Who knows.

Oh, yeah, you're a real slouch in that department, Natasha.

[Giiiirl, have you even looked in the mirror lately?]

God, I bet he was absolutely scandalized. Maybe we oughta just be hoping Peggy knows how to handle things, 'cause I'm not sure I have any hope for Steve in that department.

[And, really, they both know who wears the pants in that relationship. Even when there aren't any pants involved.]

[That hasn't been tapped in months. Tragic, really. Natasha's brow lifts at that a little.]

I'm just saying, any way you look at it—it'd be a shame to waste the opportunity.

[Natasha isn't even sure at first how to respond to that. Should she mention how Steve put his foot in his mouth bringing Peggy's honor into that conversation? She decides to spare him that one.]

As for Peggy... I have every confidence she's willing to take the lead. And they've had some time to figure things out.

[So if Natasha had to speculate, they were probably out of the awkward encounters phase, but she'd bet they still had plenty of room for improvement.]

[That's an absolute travesty. If you ever need any help, you know where to find Sam.]

I'd be more surprised if she didn't take the lead. But, then again, I'm surprised it took them months to actually get around to it, too.

[Well. Not that surprised, since they are talking about Steve.

Sam sobers for a moment, glancing up at Natasha.]

You think she knows about Sharon?

[That's a question, isn't it?]

If she does, it's not because I told her. Didn't see any reason to bring complications here—no reason to borrow trouble.

Mm. I almost mentioned her the other day, but- I didn't know if she knew. Didn't wanna turn things into a mess.

[As far as Sam's concerned, it's Steve's decision to tell her, and how much he wants to tell her.]

-more of a mess than it already is when you're telling someone about their own funeral, anyway.

[Natasha gives just half a shrug, lifting one shoulder.]

Not like she didn't know that one would happen. I already told her she died. Not about the funeral, but...

[There was context. It made sense at the time.]

They have some challenges here. No reason to put more of them down than we have to. If Sharon shows up, we can start running damage control then.
