[So — Sam got updated. Thank fucking christ. Nami, you'd better be ready for him to excitedly knock on your door at some point. You can also find Sam at The Space Bar, where he's right back to bar-tending. Feel free to stop by if you need him. But as everyone settles back into normalcy aboard the fleet, Sam makes a new entry to the network. Gotta air out that dirty laundry business.

A few days after they've returned home:]

So, um. That was something, huh...?

[He clears his throat, drums his fingers on top of an old red book.]

Let's just clear the room — I wanted to apologize for... anyone who had gone into my head, or whatever you want to call it. I know there's a lot in there that isn't exactly pleasant to deal with. But I'm cool with it. I mean, I remember it all, and I'm totally fine with everything. So if you're worried about the whole trespassing thing... I'll get over it.

I'm just... I'm sorry, because I know some of it was... Yeah.

[He's dealt with worse. Far worse.]

There are some things for me to be thankful for, right now, in better news; I got a quick trip back home between the Marsiva and the Bloodsport. See, um... My brother, he made it out of a predicament in one piece when I was sure he was gone. And I did, too. Somehow. And I got to meet my mom. Like, in the flesh, as herself.

So as shitty as this month has been in some respects... I'm... just happy I've got her and my brother.

[Ehem.]

Anyway. Enough of the sappy serious stuff.

Did ya ever go? [ The guy really didn't look like a lawyer but then again he probably didn't look like a Sheriff's Deputy, at least former. ]

[They sure are a pain in the ass, yeah. It was especially awful when Dean tried to stab it out of his own goddamn neck. Family, he swears.]

I did, yeah. Even got into a really good school. But, uh... There was some family trouble, and then more crap blew up, so I just ended up... kind of never going back to it, I guess. Cards didn't fall right.

Sounds like you went through a lot. You ever think 'bout trying for it now? You're young enough. Must be disputes that go on around here that need someone to mediate.

Unfortunately, life's gone a way that I don't think college'll ever be able to follow.

But I'm glad I did it, anyway. Full-ride. It's something to be a little proud of.

[ He only shook his head in response. ]

Ya never know how life can go sometimes. It can surprise ya and you don't look that old. Still got time.

[ A faint smile filled his face as he thought about his career path prior to the coma and the world ending. Things had made sense back then. ]

Was a Sheriff's Deputy. Sometimes that surprises people. Guess I don't look like an officer.

But not convinced. His life leaves little room for that, at least for him.]

Sheriff's Deputy, huh? I can see it. Where from? I'm guessing... Tennessee? Georgia?

[ Good thing, Rick is very persistent and doesn't often give up when his mind set onto something. ]

Georgia and Kentucky. How 'bout for you? [ He paused for a moment, considering. ] What's your world like? Seems like everybody's got somethin' different they've come from. Didn't know there were so many different - realities out there.

Kansas. I mean, I was born there, but I never really lived in any one state until just a few years ago. Still — Kansas is kind of the favorite kid of the United States for us, you know?

[He smiles.]

We, uh. We have our fair share of supernatural activity.

... It's so weird that I'm getting used to chatting about it.

[ Kansas - a state he never spent much time in but visited a couple of times over the years. Once, because of a case related issue. ]

Traveled a lot? I never really did. Mostly stayed in one place my whole life - till now, course.

[ Supernatural activity? More oddities. ]

What kinda activity? Were you involved in it?

[Yeah, that's usually the response he gets. On all fronts. Usually people don't just... wander homeless all over the country. And people usually don't deal with supernatural shit, either, and it blows his mind that his lips don't need to be as sealed here as they are back on home turf.]

Aaaah... you know... A lot of ghosts, a lot of things that go bump in the night. We follow news articles, mostly when it comes to mysterious deaths; sort of a... preventative gig to keep the body count low.

[ ghosts and things that went bump in the night made as much sense as talking clocks and pirates. what sort of illusion had he found himself in? thinking of it as a reality would take more time yet. ]

You took care of supernatural things? [ he shook his head a few times. ] Did ya like it? [ a pause. ] Why did you get involved? Did ya have a choice in it?

[He chuckles softly.]

Didn't particularly like it, actually. It was the family business, and one I got tired of a lot.

But I guess you kind of learn to enjoy something enough over time. It feels good to help people.

[ A family business to take on the supernatural. Sure, it made perfect sense to him. Still, he nodded his head as if in understanding. ]

Sometimes, ya don't always get a say in what happens to you. Just gotta learn to make the best out of it.

Did ya have to train for it or was it more like a calling?

[Boy, there are 500 ways to answer that little gem of a question.]

Training, mainly. Lots of training.

[Also destiny and angels and demons and one very intense father.]

My old man was marines, so he was... especially good at making sure at getting us prepared for whatever came at us.

[ Marines, something they had somewhat in common where their fathers were concerned. ]

My dad was in the service too. Got a lot to thank him for now.

[ The intense training sure helped back in his own world, also the Academy really helped enhance all of it. ]

You must have a pretty good handle on defense then?

You could say that, yeah.

I mean, I'm still alive somehow, so it must be a good mark on my report card.
