Okay, you're right, I didn't really try it, but the selection of wildlife in Harlem's kinda limited.

[And he's not going to open himself up to another round of bird jokes by claiming that he tried to capture pigeons.]

Besides, the rats can get their own damn pizza.

Harlem. [ well, isn't that convenient. a chance to push the conversation back onto sam -- and ideally avoid talking about herself. ] I didn't realize you were a New Yorker, Sam.

Well, unlike some people, I don't feel the need to mention it in every other sentence.

[And while Steve might be a sore subject right now, all things considered, Sam still can't resist the joke.]

Oh -- sod him. [ although there's a wrinkle of dismay when the topic rises and falls. like a wave, crashing. her stomach turns. ]

I live in New York. Have done so since the war ended. Manhattan. I'm afraid I can't get much more specific than that -- I'm between flats, at the moment.

Oh, man, I don't envy you trying to find housing in New York. I've never done it myself - lived with my parents while I was growing up, and then for a stint after Afghanistan. But I know how hard it can be.

[Not that finding housing in DC is much better, but it's still not New York.]

It's a smidge simpler when you've got a friend who owns multiple properties around the city but -- I certainly don't intend to lean upon Howard Stark's charity forever.

[ oh, she might as well indulge sam at least a little bit. ] But it's tough to find a good spot without solid references. My last landlady was rather taken aback when she watched me get perp-walked out of her lodging house.

Yeah, I can see where potential landlords might hold that kinda thing against you in pretty much any decent neighborhood.

[Maybe not where and when he grew up, but that doesn't fall under the category of "decent neighborhoods".]

Though these days, you pretty much have to murder someone to get an affordable room in the city to begin with. So the key is not getting caught when you commit your crimes.

So I've been told. [ by more than one person, too. it seems as though rent-prices in the future are a topic of considerable importance, for how often they're mentioned. gentrification is an evil she's begun to learn about in earnest. ]

Makes one think it might be prudent to start investing in property. You know, if only I could remember any of this when I'm inevitably shunted back home.
