[When Tim arrives, he's got a smug smile, and he's carrying a small, cloth-wrapped shape in one hand. Cass, whose posture-reading ability is sure to ruin many a Christmas, can tell by the way he carries it that it's a present - a sheathed combat knife.]

[hellofist]

[She can tell it's a present, but the what part does escape her. She's curious as she watches him come closer, leaning a little to the side to try to get a better angle on that little bundle.]

What's that?

[Manners are still a thing she needs to get a handle on, but. The hi Tim is in there somewhere.]

[detectivewonder]

[He unveils it with a flourish and a grin.]

For you. Not that you need it for fighting, but everybody needs to cut things sometimes.

[hellofist]

[She doesn't take the knife from him right away. She does reach out, but it's to angle his hand away from her, and once that's done she hugs him instead.]

Thank you. No one really... gets me presents.

[detectivewonder]

Well... we'll change that.

[He's a little baffled and put off-balance at first, remembering their brush on the moons a month ago, but he hugs back, firmly, and presses the hilt into her hand as he draws back.]

[She won't bring all that up, though. As fun as flustered and embarrassed Tim can be, it seems more appropriate to be nice when he's done something so sweet for her.

She inspects the knife once it's in her hands, testing it for balance and sharpness.]

Was there, uh... occasion? Did I miss a holiday? Didn't get you anything.

[detectivewonder]

My engineer's making them. I just saw what he had available, and thought of you. No big occasion.

[It's a good knife.]

[hellofist]

He's making them? Here? Must be very skilled. Making blades... takes a long time. Lots of work, special equipment.

[detectivewonder]

He's a blacksmith. A good one.

Anyway, it's yours.

[Carefully she puts the knife back into the sheath, then tucks that into the back of her pants. Not the best place to secure a knife, but it's about her only option at the moment.

She really should look into belts that aren't the utility kind, at some point in her life.]

Should get you something, now. Is there anything... that you want?

I got myself a knife already... There isn't really anything I need. It's not a big deal. Thanks, though.

[He's touched, enough that it seems almost strange to him, and he pauses, trying to analyze that feeling.]

[hellofist]

[She reaches out to gently punch his arm.]

Don't. Don't overthink it. Just be happy.

[detectivewonder]

I... yeah, okay. I am. And you?

[hellofist]

[Is she? It's not actually something she's considered often in her life, now that she thinks about it. She'd been happy when she was a child, but now that she knows the things she had been happy about then were wrong it's a little harder to be sure what it's supposed to feel like.

At the time, needing a plastic tarp on the floor to keep blood from staining tatami mats had made her happy because it made Cain happy. After that, the restrictions Bruce put on her made her happy because it meant he cared enough about her to give her rules, even if she did tend to break them at will whenever she could. Even then his punishments came from a place of affection.

So her definition of happy is vague and confused, but she smiles at Tim because there's one thing she isn't confused about.]

... Yeah. That's pretty great.

[His own body language lights up further at the thought.]
