Oh! [Vash slows and comes to a stop. Nothing but welcoming smiles as he snaps his fingers before pointing at Chekov in realisation.] Chekov, right? I'm Vash.

[He makes a point to try to know the names of his crew's friends.]

Yes sir. [He's pleasantly surprised to be both welcomed and recognized.] You are the co-captain of this ship. Kitty has talked about you.

Nothing good I hope! [Vash's laugh is loud and echoes through the ship. Happy with his own joke.]

And if it is actually all bad ahhhhhhhhh, it's all lies?

Nothing remotely good. [He smiles, amused by Vash's amusement but a little too self-possessed to go the laughing-out-loud route.]

No, she has never said a bad thing about you. [Has she? She might have said something vaguely unflattering. Not bad, though.] I'm pleased to meet you, sir.

Likewise. [Vash holds out a hand to offer a shake. His grip will be confident and frim, but not uncomfortably strong in the slightest.]

Although, I'm afraid if you've come to check on Kitty she's still doing her best sleeping beauty impression.

[Vash gets a hardy Russian handshake in return.]

I thought that she might be. [His smile falters.] But I can see that, while she is asleep, Seeker is in good hands.

Nope! You're fine! I backtag into forever! For example I still have calibration threads going!

[Vash leans down to give the dog a firm scratch behind his ear.] I hope so. I'd be a pretty poor co-captain if I couldn't at least keep the dog well taken care of. Let alone the rest of the crew.

Besides, he's the best looking in the crew. Can't have our best "lady man" unhappy or our ship's ratings might go down. [He chuckles as he gives Seeker's side a pat before standing fully upright again.]

Taking care of the crew may be the easier of those two things. Seeker has very high standards when it comes to his care.

[Chekov crouches to pet Seeker himself because not even direwolves can have too many pets.]

With all of the comas, I think that the entire fleet's ratings must be excellent. ...Although you're correct, your ship does have an advantage over the others. [Who's a handsome puppy? Seeker's a handsome puppy!]

And that is why I only give him the highest! Do you know how much work is required to help get rid of all of this guy's energy?

Because I'll give you a hint. It's a lot!

Should you need any help with your most demanding shipmate, I would be happy to take him running.

Are you trying to steal away my easy ratings? [Vash's eyes narrow as he frowns sternly at Chekov but it only lasts for a moment or two before he breaks into a snicker. Unable to keep up the facade.] Of course you can take him running. It will be good for him to get more running in and I don't like being away for long from the ship at the moment.

[OH NO oh wait he's not in trouble, never mind.]

Thank you. Maybe he will help my ratings as well. [More seriously:] I realize that we don't know each other, not really, but if there is anything that I can do to help... Fenris tells me that the singing planets can be dangerous.

[Vash nods.] So far every time we've come across one there's been something dangerous or some mystery on them. So it will be important for everyone to stay on their toes while we're here.

Did you also have one of the dreams?

[candothat]

That does not bode well.

[He shakes his head.] I have been lucky, I suppose. Did you?

I did, but I was really hoping it was a result of eating slightly off salmon. But, of course, no such luck.

It would be tragic if food betrayed you that way. If I may ask... what do you make of the dreams?

[goldenglasses]

From what I've heard of what other people also dreamed? Something bad?

[He shakes his head with a small smile.] I can't say for sure. Dreams are strange like that. It seems pretty clear that something is coming. Or that there may be some sort of hunter hiding on the planet, but these are all just guesses.

[candothat]

Your guesses sound very like the others that I have heard. [A dramatic and put-upon sigh, as if he has to deal with vague portents of disaster all the time and finds them endlessly tiresome.] What good are these prophetic dreams if they don't provide any specifics?

Exactly! It would be so much easier if they would just be up front about things! They're already sending out a tailored dream to warn about something to a bunch of different people. Really now, how much harder would it be to just say this thing is happening at this time?

It would probably save on the dream's theatrical budget too!

[candothat]

It would be far more efficient for everyone involved--for them, for us. They could skip dreams entirely and send a text.

...Unless the impracticality of it all is entertaining for them. This theoretical viewing audience that we have seems to enjoy it when our lives are complicated.

I'm sure it is. I suppose reading a book without any conflict would be just a tad dull.

Still, it would be nice to get a bit of a clearer hint.

It would be a short book. Not always a bad quality.

Since I think that clarity will only come with whatever misfortune has been predicted, there is little more that we can do. [He ruffles Seeker's ears.] Beyond being prepared for everything, of course.

Yeah! And with short books you can sound smart by saying things like: I finished a whole book today! No one needs to know it was a short book!

And everything. I got it! So I'll prepare for famine, drought, flooding, fire, hurricanes, dust storms, zombies, tornado, a lack of donuts, the sun going out, killer ducks, the flu, really persistent insurance agents, thunder and lightening storms, invading creatures, did I say famine? Yes I did. I think I did. And a swarm of flying things with teeth, and sink holes, and sand worms, and...

[He'd going to keep going until he's interrupted or his company walks away.]

[Why would he walk away? Vash is extremely entertaining.]

Temporal anomalies and aliens with god-like powers as well. Those can both be almost as troublesome as a lack of donuts.
