it's gonna rain - and it never ends

[ It's midday, or close enough to it that the sun is blazing red hot above the planet. Everything seems ordinary - for disturbing, red-tinted values of ordinary, anyway. But the normalcy doesn't last for long.

Without warning, an explosive sound shocks through the jungle. It doesn't come from any one central point, but rather several points, scattered throughout, strategically placed to the advantage of someone. And from those massive shocks rises a wave of missiles - large, fast, and apparently, freely flying. They're guided, and they've locked onto their target: any foreign ship that is currently within Lato'li's atmosphere.

There's no way to mistake it. They're headed right for the Fleet.

The first wave feels a bit sporadic - timings might be off, but the missiles are still deadly, and if they hit, they hit hard. Shields might withstand this wave, but ships without shields will take direct hits. The ability to stay airborn is very, very quickly lost.

The second wave is much more precise, expertly timed and executed by whomever is firing from below. Even smaller shuttles get caught in the crosshairs, and those ships that lasted through the first volley will take a few more shots. If shields saved you before, they will fail here, giving out under the strain.

And the third wave comes, a little bit longer after, to finish the job. There are more of them, and they are far more advanced - they make the previous two volleys look like warning shots. This time, it's all missiles launched, all targets acquired.

Seven Fleet ships - and many, many shuttles - fall out of the sky, headed straight for the surface at alarming speed. Only four ships manage to escape the assault and exit the planet's atmosphere, retreating to orbit as fast as possible. Those lucky enough to have been in orbit can only watch as all of this happens.

But the missiles aren't the only thing up their sleeve. Just when the dust settles, while the network is surely lighting up with activity, attempts to contact one another and check on the status of fellow ships and crew, A loud, quick, terrible screeching noise shocks the network. It drowns out all communications on any connected devices - ship or personal. Ships in orbit will see all on-board systems flicker, then fizzle out, all non-emergency systems have gone completely down.

And with that.. there's silence. Perhaps too much silence. No matter what you do, no matter which buttons you press, which channels you try, there is no connection. Those who have dropped to the surface are entirely radio silent, and those in orbit have been reduced to the barest of abilities and life-support, with the bare minimum of contact.

So... What can you do now? ]

[So many ships are going down that Katie is losing track of which one's which. She knows the Bloodsport took a hit, though-- Sam's ship, also Freyja's and Kaname's-- and she touches fingers to the glass of one of the Iskaulit's huge windows, letting a wisp of light drift out into space.

Nobody can see it except Katie, so why she's staring intently out into space and then cursing faintly under her breath is easily misconstrued to just the general chaos going on in the atmosphere. Because she was hoping it would track Sam's presence to anywhere but planetwards-- the guy gets around-- but nope.

Guess she's gonna visit that travesty of a planet after all.]

[As soon as the first missiles hit, Riona knows they're in deep shit.

Maker, she tries to get the ship out of harm's way, but it amounts to nothing in the end. Once that third volley hits, all systems stop responding, and the ship lurches frightfully down, and down, and down. The most she can manage is a "brace for impact" warning and desperately trying to keep the ship level before it hits the ground.

It's a violent impact, nearly sending her out of her seat as the poor ship collides with the ground. Just when it feels like the ship will slide forever, it finally grinds to a halt. Outside the windows are trees and wilderness. It's a forest Riona recognizes from her dream weeks ago, and her stomach drops like a lead weight.

They crashed into the forest of nightmares, and it's her fault. A better pilot would have gotten them away from the missiles before they hit the ship. Now they're stranded on a planet that has frightened natives, and an enemy that's said to lurk in the forests.

You're off to a stellar start, first mate.

Her utter contempt for herself remains masked, for now. Besides, she's got more immediate things to worry about, like her crew. She starts calling out names as she limps off the bridge, her ankle smarting from the brunt of the impact.]

Merlan had been tinkering with the shield since the waystations had been coming up like ghost towns, trying to get a higher output from it but she hadn't quite gotten it to a level that did much more than its current capacity. It was more efficient, perhaps but that didn't mean that first volley didn't pack a mean punch it was enough that she lost the tea tray she'd been carrying and only just managed to save the tea. With Khadgar aboard, engine tinkering was the last think of her mind. The tea floated toward her room.

"Khadgar, we've got a situation," she growled clinging to the now open door and sliding the tea onto a stable surface for the moment. With a hit like that, Merlan was pretty sure unfriendly was a keyword.

She hit the shipwide communications.

"Who's got command? Nami, Sam?" was the first thing that came out. "Cloud?" She was pretty sure he was on pilot duty. "What's going on out there and can someone give me a headcount? I've got Khadgar visiting from the Twin Roses."

[ (Un)fortunately for Aerith, as soon as they had arrived close to the Planet she had shuttled over to where Zack and Cloud were; the Planet was far, far worse than the one before and the feeling she got from it was something terribly, uncomfortable goosebumps on her skin and an uncertainty that she couldn't quite put her fingers on. The last planet had been desperate but hopeful, reaching for someone to help them and screaming when she reached back, but this one...

That's why she had come to the boys, and that's why she's crashed.

The first thing she does when they hit the planet is make sure as many people as she can find aren't hurt. With the materia that Zack and Cloud had given her before she can actually use a bit of her magic, and she goes out of her way to check as many people as possible, reaching out to them and offering a soft smile, even if she's clearly on edge and nervous about something. She doesn't have the energy to worry about why they're here or what happened - those questions can come later, once everyone is safe and taken care of.

The problem is that the planet is still there, in the back of her mind. As soon as she's checked over as many people as possible she steps away from the crash site, moving to one side and dropping to her knees to pray - and, almost as soon as she starts, she begins to regret it.

Her mind explodes with sickness, the lurch of her stomach like desperate hunger, gnawing at her and feeling as though it's tearing her insides - and there's so much darkness, so much pain and corruption. It's as though the planet is a thousand different people all talking to her at once but there's no end, just an abyss - and she pulls away, hand over her mouth, almost gagging. This isn't like her planet, or Lyuku. This planet wants to talk to her just as much as those did before, but there's nothing good.

It terrifies her, for a moment, and she sits for a long period of time, quiet and thoughtful, thinking, before she pushes herself up and focusses on the task at hand. She's not going to sit around and be useless, even if she feels sick, even if still feels like the planet is reaching out to grab at her. She forces a smile onto her face and goes to meet the rest of the Bloodsport, and to keep an eye on her two boys. ]

[Sokka does his best to be as prepared as one can be on the Fleet- but this is a new one. As soon as the first strike hit, he was desperately trying to get their shields back online. It does nothing, of course, the shields are gone and all he can do is brace for impact as the ship comes crashing down. He goes to check up on everyone- of course he does, top priority and all that.

Once he knows everyone is...well alive, he starts to check on the ship, brow furrowed.

[Cyril was on the Blue Fish to visit Dorian. He had expected it to be another easy visit before he headed back to the Wonderduck and then the shooting started. Almost immediately he sprang from Dorian's room to head to the cockpit.

He was new to the idea of piloting. They had nothing like the Blue Fish in Thedas, but the agument helped him know what to do. To a point. It supplied the 'how to' but he still needed to learn how to do it well. He tried to help Riona as a co-pilot but the two of them couldn't dodge the relentless volley.

When they crashed he didn't really have time to process what was happening, only that they were still likely under attack. They had been shot down for a reason, after all. Who knew what waited outside in that forest. He quickly unbuckled himself and turned to look at Riona.
]

Are you hurt? [He wanted to go check on Dorian , and make sure they were ready to fight if necessary, but Riona was right next to him and together they had tried everything to save her crew. He couldn't just rush off without checking on her first.]

Just twisted my ankle a bit from the impact. It's nothing serious. [She's sure it's not broken, not so sure if it's sprained or not. But that's for later.] Are you injured at all? [Cyril is visiting Dorian when this all goes down. During the volley he had run to the cockpit to help but ultimately the ship had still gone down. Now, they're stuck on the planet's surface and he's with the crew of this ship as they desperately work to figure out that status.

Cyril isn't sure what help he can be, but he's here to be bossed around if they need an extra person to help out.

He's also very worried about their attackers trying to raid the ship.

[ Well shit.

The first thing she notices is that everything hurt, as though she had decided to spend an evening in a pen of rampaging bulls. The second? How it hurt to breathe, how a distant smell of something burning fills her nose and her lungs burn from the action. Fingers curl into fight fists as her lungs are seized by a violent fit of coughs, stubbornness pulling her from the corner she had ended up in. Frankly she doesn't remember crashing what she does remember is being flung across a the room like a rag doll, perhaps why everything hurts.

Another fit of coughs and Hawke reaches up, fingers brushing against a gash right about an eye that flares angrily, blood bubbling up and over the wound. ]
Shit. [ She mumbles rubbing her now bloody fingers together, debating for a moment of burning it closed before it becomes a problem.

That would be the smart thing to do.

Instead she pushes herself up, finds her staff, and stumbles her way from whatever room (forgotten which it is, more important things to worry about) she found herself in bloody head wound and all. First thing is first; see if the crew is safe, or at least not horribly maimed, after that? Maker's balls, after that maybe they can figure out what the hell is going on. ]

[Gil had thought he have a routine day but instead his shuttle was caught up in the firing from the planet. He was able to keep the thing from blowing up, but he wasn't the ace pilot that Kallo was (as loath as he was to admit that), and ultimately the small ship was hit.
