[When everyone is still reeling from dealing with what happened on the planet, what better way to cheer everyone up than some seriously weird ass fun? Totally. He has the best ideas.

So on some morning after the drift has started and the Fleet seems to be calming down, everyone will get this lovely weird message on the comms. There is no picture of the speaker attached because he sure as hell isn't giving clues to his location.]

I heard from somewhere that this is a popular game in the future.

I wasn't hiding. I was merely not in full and complete line of sight.

Plus I couldn't not take the photo. He wasn't all angry for once.

well i can understand why he is angry, but it could be a lot worse i suppose

I would never take a bad photograph of someone.

Also it's fascinating that this device can do it so quickly. It used to be that sitting for an image would take hours. Now it's just a click of a button. Technology is dangerous.

why would you sit for hours for a picture

though to be fair this sort of thing does not exist in my world

It was the only way for a photograph to be taken. I never understood the process well, but I heard you had to sit still for a very long time in order for it to be created.

It was a very new concept in my country, having come from the West.

though i know people sit for paintings, i guess that is the same thing? it all sounds like a waste of time to me

I suppose it is. Paintings were much more normal for my time, too, but considering my line of work, I didn't want my face to be widely known. It was much nicer being anonymous.

I don't believe I ever did.

Although my name is out now, so I suppose anyone from Earth might recognize it.

I was tasked with keeping the peace in the capital, which included fighting against the rebels who wished to overthrow the government.

In the simplest of terms, yes, I suppose I could have been called a soldier. But we weren't an army, simply a group of samurai tasked with a job.

[A very bloody job fighting a war against rebels.]

And in a way I was more...infamous than famous, I think. The opposition would have loved to know what we looked like so they could assassinate us off duty. And having our faces be mostly anonymous meant we could move more easily through the city and gather intelligence.

but that makes sense. i had to do similar to hide my identity though not for the same reasons

Not quite a mercenary. We weren't for hire.

Similar only in that we were employed by the government. Originally all samurai had masters, but later many became ronin - ronin are the closest to mercenaries, I suppose. But we are not ronin anymore.
