[Anders wasn't the type to post to the network all that often, but he's also not usually in a position to need to ask for help, so, network it is.

There's a touch of uncertainty and hesitation to his baring when he starts the feed and, instead of being in the Tourist's clinic or one of the gardens as he usually is, he's in the ship's cargo bay. Open space seemed like the best thing for what he was trying to practice.]

The gifts Atroma delivered to us seem thoughtful enough, considering, but I find myself in need of some help with mine. I thought I could perhaps figure it out myself, but it hasn't worked out so far.

I know the terms are familiar to those from Thedas, but just in case they're familiar to anyone else: I'd like to speak to anyone who knows about 'Arcane Warriors' and 'Knight Enchanters.' I need help applying my knowledge of one to the other.

[A brief pause.]

To anyone else, I'm in need of a sparring partner. Anyone skilled with a blade willing to help out would be welcome. Thank you.

[And now he waits. He hasn't breathed a word about the Spirit Hilt sent to him...and knows there's some who didn't even know he could wield a sword, much less had in the past. Really, there were only two that would.

But desperate times and all that.]

[ After seeing the broadcast, Kara heads over to the cargo bay on the Tourist. She still hasn't really talked to too many people since their last discussion but she's been trying to increase her presence back at the ship. When she gets to the bay, she's holding two mugs of hot chocolate and lightly knocks on the doorway ]

Hi! I was making up some hot chocolate and I saw your broadcast and while I definitely don't have any relevant experience to what you're asking about, I thought I'd make you a mug and bring it over.

And I'm not skilled in wielding any blades but I am pretty indestructible, so if that could be helpful...

I almost chose to become a Knight Enchanter, and I read the book that details the specialisation. How might I help?

I don't know much about swords, but I have plenty of experience with spears if you're looking for somebody to practice with.

[And she could definitely use the practice on her end, as well. It's been a long time since she was in a fight, and with the most recent planet being so peaceful she'd gotten a little too complacent for her liking.]

I've been focused on my skill with a blade since losing my arm. I was previously focused on using a bow during battle.

I'm not sure someone as rusty as I would be best for you, but it might be possible we could learn together?

As far as Knight Enchanters... I'm afraid everything I know if through second hand stories and from Enchanter Vivienne. Leilani might have better answers there.

[He's a little surprised by her arrival, he still hadn't seen a whole lot of her since their whole sit-down, so he figured she needed time to come back around. Since they weren't close, he hadn't been expecting her, but she was hardly unwelcome. He was starting to get the feeling she was sort of like Merrill: sweet to everyone as long as her ideals weren't challenged.

He smiled at her and motioned for her to join him where he'd made up a bench out of whatever he could find.]

I haven't had anything similar to hot chocolate in a long while, but I do love chocolate as a rule, so thank you.

How indestructible are we talking here? I'm not sure how comfortable I'd feel practicing with you if you're unarmed.

[Not that he couldn't heal it, he was the ship's doctor after all, but he'd rather fix what other people had done, not what he himself had caused.]

Thank the Maker, I admit, it was a shot in the dark asking about this.

Basically, I was taught in the ways of the Arcane Warrior which...I'm not sure how much you might know of it...I don't want to assume.

[It's rude to Elfsplain things to elves, Valenna had been less than impressed as Anders had gone on and on about his new specialization, courtesy of the Commander. However, Arcane Warriors were old enough to be part of the things lost to the Dalish, so perhaps he was assuming too much in the opposite direction as well.]

But I know the practice of Knight Enchanters was based on Arcane Warriors. [He holds up the spirit hilt for her to see.] I'm trying to figure out how to make my abilities work with this instead of an actual blade. Besides, the focus is a little different for the more energy-based abilities.

I am happy to say I've figured out how to make the blade appear, at least.

[ she goes to sit with him and hands him a mug ]

Do you have bullets where you're from? Because more indestructible than that.

Though, you're right. I'm not sure I wouldn't break your weapons.

[He greets her with a nod and a smile.]

I would welcome the help, thank you. Besides, practicing against different forms of weapons is a better idea.

[But now he hesitates a moment before deciding to say something. Yes, most of the people he's met on the fleet have nothing against magic, but that's still a very foreign concept to him and Felix's reaction back on the cannibal planet is still fresh in his mind.]

I do feel I need to warn you, just in case, my skills and even my sword itself are subsets of my magic. Some would find themselves uncomfortable with that, so I figure a warning is fair.

[Anders has the spirit hilt in hand, the spectral blade a bright glowing blue like Anders' healing magic which seems to almost hum with energy.

But Kirk's voice draws Anders' attention and he offers his captain a smile and the blade vanishes with a flick of the mage's wrist, leaving only the metal base in his hand.]

Helo, Jim. It's going well enough for needing to tech myself a whole new specialization in magic. Someone from my world was able to offer some insight that definitely helped.

[His smile widens, but it's soft.] Where you just coming down to check on me?

I think someone as 'rusty' as you would be perfect, it's been nearly ten years since I carried anything but a staff, so I believe I would fall into that category as well.

Leilani has offered to go over what she knows with me, apparently she studied it a bit back home.

[Luckily for him or he'd end up needing to figure it all out on his own.]

At least, if one of us gets hurt from our lack of skill, I can heal us.

I know enough to recognise what it is.

[ At least he's kind enough not to assume she's without the knowledge, which is kinder than some of the humans she's met in her time. ]

You have the hilt already, so that is the first part. When I was given the chance to learn I had to craft my own. I don't know if you've ever tried to find Wisp Essence and Lazurite, but it's not as easy as it sounds.

[ Frowning, she considers, thoughtful. ]

Commander Helaine offered to be my teacher, before I chose Rift magic. She and Madame de Fer were both Knight Enchanters, and I learned some things from watching the two of them. There is meant to be a spirit inside the hilt that will weave mana into the blade. If there isn't a spirit in the one you have then, perhaps, you should try to find a way to get mana into it.

Magic? I don't see why that would be a problem.

[She's used to fighting with invisible elemental spirits. Magic isn't anything new.]

I used to fight with magic myself, but I don't have access to my abilities here.

[Fenris isn't one of those two people. He sounds unsurprisingly a little incredulous. ]

You wish to learn how to be a battlemage? You?

[What a shock.]

This may come as a surprise to you, but there are things about me you don't know.

[It's snippily said for sure, but not nearly as harsh as it could have been.]

I already am a battlemage, I learned to be an Arcane Warrior back with the Wardens. I simply didn't bring my sword with me when I left, I figured it might stand out.

[Mages with swords weren't exactly common and Spellweaver had been imbued with magic, it would have surely been noticeable.

Too bad too, it likely would have been helpful against those damn dragons in the Bone Pit.]

Anders, you absolutely stood out in Kirkwall regardless. The blue glow was exceptionally obvious.

[Says he, who also has a blue glow. And, of course, Fenris is just going to snippily put this out there.]

It would have been helpful when the dragon was trying to eat us, you know. You actually being able to fight.

I mean, if I'm going to end up injured again, then what better person to be around than the healer of Darktown? [And that's probably the closest he's going to let himself get to 'I know who you are and don't care.']

I could use more practice myself, either way. I tried to fight with Justice on the planet and ended up being a liability....

You don't happen to have advise for coping with loss of limb do you? As a healer,
I mean. [His voice manages to sound pretty casual, even as the subject is one that weighs heavily on him.]

Yeah, something like that. This is not my area of expertise at all, but, you know, can offer morale support?

[He takes it with a grateful smile and blows on it lightly. A careful sip later and his eyes close for just a moment in pure enjoyment.]

No bullets, no, but I understand what you mean. Luckily, you can't break my weapons either.

[He takes another careful sip, then sets the mug aside and pulls out the hilt. It looked no different than a regular sword hilt, but held no blade.]

The blade is made of my own energy, my mana. It can't be broken so long as I haven't drained myself of all of it.]

To demonstrate, the blade forms out of what looks like pure blue light and holds it's form. A slight hum reverberates in the hair and it radiates cold, but as he taps the end to the floor of the ship, it makes a light tink sound like glass.]

So, perhaps, it wouldn't be so bad.

[He huffs out a small laugh.] Thank the Maker for that. For some, it is a problem.

If you don't mind my asking, why don't you have access to them? Is it just distance? Were they locked away or was there some special circumstances of your homeworld that allowed them?

[This was supposed to be about sword fighting...but he still loved to learn and loved magic and this covered both.]

[He looks the hilt over, puzzled.] I don't think there is.

I'm not sure what it's like for you, but I can barely reach the Fade from here, like brushing something with the very tips of your fingertips while stretched out as far as you can. My dreams are still the same, but with a blank background and the spirits I can reach for my spirit healing are only the ones who have answered my call for years now. Although, I wouldn't put it past Atroma to be able to snatch a wisp if they really wanted.

[But a blue blade appears from the hilt and he holds it closer for her to see.]

As far as I can tell, it's definitely just pulling my mana and shaping it, but the blade isn't the issue, it's the abilities. I'm not sure how Knight Enchanters access or focus their abilities, if the idea is the same or drastically different.

...Which is part of why I came to the cargo bay, the last thing anyone needs is a magical disaster in the middle of a narrow hallway.

I was dodging the Wardens remember? I'd like to see what a Templar would do with a mage with a sword.
[That would be a fun little musing later.]

[Of course he has to say what Anders was thinking and he just sneers in response. Though it's far more tempered than any other similar look he's given the elf in the past, born more from the feeling of a thorn in your side than of pure hate.]

I can fight. Or did you conveniently forget the lightning I can pull from nowhere? Besides, I didn't hear you complaining any more than usual when I saved you from losing your arm to that blasted thing with my healing magic.

Ooh, well I'm not sure how I'd do against mana. Magic is slightly different.

How do you do that?

Probably bring more swords. But you would likely have a few moments of confusion before they mobilised enough to try and take you down. And yes, I am very aware of that, thank you.

[He doesn't think he'll ever get used to not wanting to punch Anders in the face every breathing second. He's sure it's probably a good thing, but it'll always be weird. ]

Yes, well, I am rather attached to my arm. And you know I meant fighting with a blade instead of with magic. There's a difference.

[IS there, Fenris? ]

Then it's all on you. That's fascinating.

[ It certainly reminds her of what it was like to travel with Vivienne, and she wonders, for a moment, about the things that the other woman taught her, trying to think back on the tidbits of conversation that they'd shared over the hours. Madame liked to talk about her own magic, of course, and the potential it held for the Circles, but Leilani had always tuned that part out.

Humming, she considers, thoughtful. ]

I'm trying to think of what Vivienne did with her magic once her blade was summoned. She used to... Use the sword, I think, to create a circle around herself and used her own magic to have it slow people down so they couldn't get to her. That always made her sword stronger, too. You could try doing something like that?
