[As if waking up on a strange ship alone wasn't enough when Ulaz knew he shouldn't be there, now he was on yet another ship. This really was not funny. His attempts to try and get information through hacking had been poor at best and he was no closer to figuring what had happened.

He had learned one thing though; he did not like confetti. It was not amusing in the least.

He'd been pretty much silent so far - if being a Blade had taught him nothing else, it was how to make as little noise as possible. But now he doesn't really have a choice]

Can someone explain what is going on here? First I was on one ship and now another, neither of them where I should be. This must be a joke.

[And why does he say that? Hmm...]

Let me apologize now, because this is going to sound really rude, but what race are you from?

[He knew a lot of alien races, but whatever this guy was from, Shepard had never run across it.

Also, an alien being here at all kind of poked a hole in a few of the theories he'd come up with about what they were all actually doing there.

[Well since someone ha already answered that he's probably not going to have to worry about the Galra Empire here, he answer]

There is no reason to apologize for trying to gain knowledge. I'm still Galra whether you ask or not.

[He's not trying to be rude. He's just... blunt]

[He tries the word out himself.]

I don't believe there are any Galra where I come from, at least not in my galaxy.

[He's not even close to offended. He spent nearly a year with Jack and eight months with Javik, it was hard to offend him these days.]

You would know if there were Galra near you. They aren't likely to pass by without making themselves known.

[The Galra were after all trying to conquer the known universe. If anyone hadn't heard about them, they were lucky]

Sounds like some species I know backhome.

[Reapers, mostly, but, so far, there hadn't been any sign of those particular nightmares here.]

I'm Commander Karman Shepard.

Once you're settled in more, I'd be interested in learning about your people; if you're willing.

You are the captain of one of the ship then?

[Since he used the title of captain]

If you want to learn about them, I will share information on them.

[Heck, he considers himself separate from the majority of Galra so he has no problem with pointing out what they are about]

I am. The Vanquish, though the title comes from home more than it does here, just an old habit I haven't bothered shaking.

[Even his close friends and loved ones called him Commander Shepard, it was hard to go by anything else.]

Then you were a commander back home. What sort of unit?

[Probably not a coincidence that he's leading a ship but also still... interesting]

[At least now he doesn't have to be concerned with the length of time of a week if someone else is contacting him...]

Earth's space naval unit. I led...I guess you could call it a special operations unit. [Also a Citadel Specter, but that title seemed to hold even less weight than being part of the Navy. He wished the councilors could be here so he could see their faces about that little fact.]

Special operations? In what way?

[He's genuinely curious if there are positions similar to those in the Galra fleet in other races' military structures. Most military operations didn't stand a chance against the Galra... except a few]

There were a lot of different groups that did different things.

Usually, mine was more for dealing with messes no one else wanted to. Generally, I'd be given quiet support from the higher command while publically they claimed whatever I was fighting or dealing with wasn't a problem.

[Does he sound a little bitter? He might. It could be worse, the Council could have turned their backs on him completely, but he definitely still blamed them for the state of things by the time the real trouble started.]

At least until recently, anyway. Recently, my galaxy was invaded and I was made head of the forces trying to take the invaders down.

[Ulaz just listened patiently as he explained. He definitely did get the idea that he was bitter about what had been happening with his specific group. Not that he had any reference for what was going on with them, but also not that he could blame him. He’d felt similarly at times]

What sort of creatures invaded your galaxy?

They're called the Reapers. Or, at least, that's what organics call them. They're a race of artificial life whose directive is to eradicate organic life every fifty-thousand years. Long story short, they were made to control a population and, as with most A.I.s, they grew beyond their initial programming and even turned on their creators.

They invaded to destroy civilization and harvest the people living in the galaxy. We were the first cycle to actually stop them.

[He had to cling to that. He couldn't actually know beyond what the Catalyst had promised, but he had to believe he made the right choice or he didn't have anything left.]

So they were created by an overly large society that didn't want to have to decide on its own how to limit their population. Having an automated machine decide how to control the population takes the fault from their hands for having someone die.

Congratulations on being the first to stop them.

Something like that, though I think they saw themselves over it all, not that they'd have any guilt for it. Honestly they were a bunch of jackasses, I got to talk to some who'd managed to stay in hiding for hundreds of thousands of years.

But thanks. It wasn't easy, a lot of people still died. But I think it'll be better.

Of course. That is the way of a tyrant, no matter what form. They are immune to the damage they cause or so they believe.

Unfortunately the sacrifices of some will gain the freedom of others. Those who lived are better off and those who perished should be properly remembered.

It sounds like you might know a thing or two about that kind of situation.

We are fighting our own war back home. Emperor Zarkon of the Galra is a tyrant who only seeks power and it doesn't matter who is in his way. Entire planets can no longer remember a life before being conquered by the Galra. But there are those risking their lives to bring down the Galra Empire, to bring peace back to the universe.

[So he's getting some lessons about the Galra right now!]
