Hey, guys! I'm Steven, I'm really new here! I was wondering if anyone else here was magic? I mean, I know there's a bunch of warriors here, which is really cool, but I figured I should keep up my magic practice as well. I could do it on my own, but it's way more fun to practice with friends, right?

[He gives the sword a respectful distance as he grabs his shoe-- and promptly balances on one foot, hopping in place as he puts it on.]

Not especially. They get cold in colder climates, but otherwise, they are fine.

Sounds like you could use socks! Or shoes, maybe. They're useful.

I have survived fine enough without them this long.

[Well THAT SEEMS DUMB but Steven keeps that to himself.]

How long did it take before you could lift that sword?

[There's a long pause, before Fenris answers. ]

I have been able to lift them for as long as I can remember.

[It's technically true? ]

You could lift them when you were my age? Man, you're strong!

...Perhaps.

I am a warrior. It comes naturally to us.

Dude. You must have been really buff.

I may have been.

[Just...hedging, unto eternity. ]

You don't remember?

No. I remember nothing of my life before I received my markings.

[Awkward. He scrubs at his nose and then says awkwardly:]

[Fenris gives a lanky shrug. Not unkindly: ]

Yeah, I guess.

[A beat, and then:]

If-- if you ever wanna, uh, talk, or . . . well, I have healing powers, magic junk, but I dunno if they work on memories, but-- we could totally try.

NO.

[That comes out a little fast and panicked, and he takes a breath. ]

...No. Thank you. I do not wish to have magic used on me.

[His eyes widen-- even his father hasn't had that kind of emphatic reaction to magic.]

I won't. I mean, I don't-- I won't. Promise.

[Fenris is going to be a super fun experience for him. ]

Hmm. I doubt you will. It is...fine.

[That's a shitty attempt at comfort. ]

You're sure?

[Don't give him that face, Steven, you're making him have feelings.]

Do not worry about it. It is my own problem, not yours.

I guess.

[Poor Fenris.]

But . . . if you, you know, ever want help . . .

[What, is he going to gently introduce him to magic? But he makes the offer nonetheless, dedicated and earnest.]

[Steven, you are a good kid. Fenris gives the faintest of smiles. ]

Your offer is kind, but I will be...fine. I am used to it.

Just keep it in mind, okay?
