[Alistair remembers the child from the planet with the red everything and cannibals. A ship captain, he thinks if he's heard correctly. And a good fighter as well. When he hears the boy's voice, he turns and looks to where he is looking.]

Maybe that's something that's been broken since before all of the automatic things started? There are a few tree stumps not that far from the town proper that look like they've been there for a while instead of regrowing.

[He notices the wince and grimaces in sympathy.]

Something like that. I don't know for sure, but it makes as much sense as it magically replenishing everything everyday for no specific reason.

So... Maybe that's how they made it easy to live here! They just kept remaking things.

I agree that there's something wrong with this place. If everything regenerates every day like this, there has to be something that took them or killed them without damaging the buildings and items kept here.

It feels like a ghost town, if I'm honest.

[He can't help but feel a deep sadness at that. It's not his first time running into something where people used to live — and then abruptly... painfully... didn't. He can only hope that they're not literal ghosts here.]

I hope they got out... Like the planet that blew up. Maybe they got out.

[Alistair stops staring out of the window to stare down at the boy at his side, his face a strange mixture of horror and curiosity.]

Wait.... There was a planet that blew up? When was this?

A meteor hit it, not very long ago. We had to get everyone off it before they went with it, too...

It was... really bad. Some of our people even got killed, but we were lucky — 'cause they came back.

I thought the cannibals were bad enough, but you can stop them. They're people of a sort. No way to stop a planet from exploding, I would think.

But people died?

[He nods, more serious now; he's quite good at it, at absorbing and distributing information as an adult would.

He's had plenty of time to practice.]

Nine of our fleet crew, yeah. I was so relieved when they came back, but... we didn't really know for sure if they would; all we could really do was wait. I had hope, because... if I could be brought back to life at home... then they should be able to here, with even more tech stuff.

[It's rather sad that he's getting all of this information from a child around Conner's age. But, after what happened in Redcliffe, his young cousin is a much different person than he was before the Blight. Trauma makes everyone grow up.]

What do you mean 'if you could be brought back to life back home'? Did something happen to you before you got here?

I died back home, and got brought back to life there...

I had some real bad parents. But it's okay now! That was — plenty of years ago.

[Crap, this conversation. He's at least grown the last few years enough to recognize that it's a bad topic — adults tend to not take it well. So he sort of skirts around the first two questions.]

It's been a while! Um...! Like — five years... I think.

Five years... Have you been with the Fleet this entire time?

Oh, no! I mean, I've been in this fleet for like... ummm. Two years now?

But before, I was on a different ship for a few years. One not in the fleet. It was called The Tranquility.

[And it was way shittier than here.]

Tranquility? That seems unusual for a ship, if I'm honest. Aren't they named after people and scary things?

I knew a pirate who called her ship 'The Siren's Call'.

... The Siren's Call... That sounds kinda spooky.

The Tranquility was really spooky, too. It was really hard to live on sometimes... We had to get in special pods once a month, too! Or we'd be smash into a puddle in the ship. It was kinda scary, especially when the hallways would act funny.

I think the scariest thing Isabela ever had to deal with was a scurvy-laden crew and being the only woman on the ship for months on end.

[Not that that would stop her.]

Smashed into a puddle if you miss some creepy pod in a month. [He frowns and tries not to think about what that would mean, but the last bit has his attention.]

What do you mean about the hallways acting funny?

It's like — it's like they kinda were alive. They changed all the time, so it was easy to get lost.

You ever been in a place that moved on its own like that?

Nooooooo, I can't say that I have. I mean, I've been in genuinely haunted places, but... the walls didn't suddenly change.

[The Warden's Keep was pretty bad though.]

It was real bad. But it ended up mostly being this real crazy guy who wanted to be a god.

That, uh, that seems to be pretty common. If they don't want to be gods, they still want to rule the world or whatever, from what I can tell. But, you know, being in charge is more than just telling people what to do.
