Waking up on the Marsiva

[Manji awakens with a start and falls out of the welcome bunk with a shout.]

RIN! I’M COMING!

[The slam on the floor is what first helps him realise that he’s not where he was before. There wasn’t nearly enough snow.] Where the hell am I? [His voice is gruff and angry. He is in no mood for games as he strides down the hall, a surly, scarred man in a black and white kimono. Missing an arm doesn’t make him any less intimidating.] Where am I? Who is responsible for this!? SHOW YOURSELF!

[Rin was freezing somewhere! He didn’t have time for being out among the stars! He needed to--- wait, did he just pass a window with nothing but stars outside?

He stops and trails back to stare dumbly at the window.] Oh… [Well, that’s different.]

”Accidental” Video - Open to All

[Sometime after Manji and Makie are reunited and have gotten past that whole: My boss wants me to kill your boss thing - oh, god please don’t hurt me Makie awkwardness, the video feed on Manji’s device is turned on-- only the video is very shaky and being filmed upside down.

And there’s a very “mansplainy” voice being broadcast out to everyone.] --and that’s how that works. At least I think it works that way. Now this thing! [The camera is given a vigorous shake.] I’ll be honest. I’m not really sure what this thing is for. I just found it. It’s very loud. Kind of annoying, really.

[A slender hand reaches into view briefly, and then the communicator is carefully set the right way up. Makie stares down at it briefly, then retreats out of sight to leave Manji staring blankly in her wake.]

Eh? What’d you do that for? [He hasn’t figured out he’s broadcasting yet, but he has figured out one thing.]

Wait. Do you know what this is? [He shakes the camera in Makie’s direction, sounding completely shocked.

Makie...just stares at him. Predictably.]

This is nothing like any vase I know of. [He knows she's not being literal. He just can't help himself.]

And yeah. Sure. She's just wonderful. Like a stabbing pain in my side. [Said full of sarcasm but he flashes Makie an amused "no hard feelings" smile. Get it? Because you stabbed me? In my side? It was hilarious!]

Yeah, well, vases get better. [Or they don't, but it's all she's got.

Something about the joke—the reference to stabbing—jogs her memory a little more and she realizes the man on the other end does look familiar, but she's not sure how. She looks at him curiously for a quiet beat.]

Mm...She's part of my crew. [Which will be true even if she doesn't come back to the Twin Roses, but she hopes she does. She also recognizes her mind probably isn't in a place to process where she wants to live right now.]

Your crew? Aw, jeez. [Manji sighs and gives the side of his head a lazy scratch.] There's more Itto-ryu here?

Look. I ain't got any problems with you so let's just let bygones be bygones while we're stuck here together, 'lright? Unless, of course, you have a death wish then by all means go ahead. You won't be able to kill me.

[Yes, he's now assuming that she should know who he is.]

I'm not Itto-ryu and as far as I know no one else is either. Things are more complicated here. But I'm also not interested in trying to kill you if that helps. [Although part of her is already annoyed by the premise she wouldn't be able to kill him.]

I don't care if you try to kill me or not. I'm just giving you a fair warning that it won't end well for you. [He'd be willing to let her have a go at killing him, but you know, the immortal thing makes it a little unfair.]

So you're not Itto-ryu but you're still crew... [The augment supplies the rest for him. If he had been more willing to listen he probably would have gotten the right idea sooner.] Oh. Do crews really matter in a place like this?

I'm not super interested in the posturing of who can kill who the best.

[She tilts her head, practically seeing things fall into place for him. The augment probably. She hates that thing even if it can be useful.]

They matter to me. The only kind of mattering that matters. [Though she doesn't pit crew against crew either. They're all in this together. She just needs a team, a family.]

That's fine then. That it matters to you. [He won't let it matter to him. ~~Or so he will lie to himself about it not mattering.~~] So she's part of your crew then. Well, good for her. [He wasn't sure she had it in her.]

So does the "trapped spirit" have a name?

[She finds it interesting that he said "good for her" instead of "good for you". It's not just taunting then. Curious.]

Kitty Pryde. And you?

Manji. [Just Manji.] Don't suppose you know of any Japanese girl named Rin in the crew, do ya? [He doesn't sound like he has much hope that she has, but just in case.]

I haven't heard of anyone by that name. [And while she doesn't necessarily know everyone coming and leaving the fleet she does keep the occasional eye on the roster, so it should at least sound familiar if there was a Rin.]

Daughter?

Daugh-BUW HA HA HA! [He laughs long and hard. Having to put his hand on his side as if to stop a stitch.] She's no daughter of mine! Don't have any kids and that's the way I plan to keep it.

Yes, yes, I said a hilarious thing about how sometimes people are related. [Dryly.]

I'm just the kid's bodyguard. Nothing more than that. [Not that she reminds him of his murdered sister and she's become family to him or anything. No, no, no. Nothing like that!] Can't really do my job if I have no idea where she is, but if she's not here then I guess I finally get a break from her. About time I get a break from that whiny kid. [He says this in the hopes that he does become happy to be away from her. Not that he ever will.]

Great, well, welcome to vacation then. There's a pool and some bars. Lots of ways to spend a day with no one to protect. [She's never been a bodyguard but she can't exactly just be without having people to protect. See also, her crew is important to her.]

What's a pool? [A bar he can understand.] And how do I get off this ship to get to one of the bars?

Swimming pool? It's like a fake pond you can swim in. Also cleaner than a pond.

You don't get off the Marsiva until they place you somewhere. You'll get assigned to another ship. Once you end up there you can take a shuttle over to the Iskaulit.

How do we get on the other ship once we've been assigned? Does someone come for us or do the doors just open? [He's hoping someone comes so he can have someone to hit.]

You just appear. There's no warning or process. And then suddenly confetti and pudding and a new ship.

I would ask how that is possible, but I suppose it's the same way they got me up in space without my knowing.

You got it in one. They pretty much do whatever they want whether it seems feasible or not.

Well, that's annoying. They sound like a spoiled child who needs to be told 'no'. [Manji is happy to assist with that 'no' lesson.] If they are a spoiled child then they'll mess up sooner or later.

I think they may be spoiled, technologically advanced adults, but maybe they'll mess up eventually anyway.

Everyone messes up. Especially people who think they're smart and hold all the keys. [He broke out of prison recently thanks to "smart" people like that.] Just need to be patient.
