[Beverly is onscreen, the Blue Fish's med bay, still intact, behind her. Her jaw is set with determination as she talks.]

Attention, Drift Fleet. This is Dr. Beverly Crusher of the USS... of the SS Blue Fish. I know some of you have taken significant damage to your ships, possibly to your sickbays, and that others do not have a medic on board. Fortunately, our sickbay survived the attack, so I am offering it as a central location to help the wounded while repairs are being made elsewhere. We have a small supply of blood on hand as well, should anyone need it. If any member of your crew is too severely injured to be moved, please let me know, and I will come to you. No payments will be necessary for any treatment.

Thank you for your time.

[She signs off with a grim smile.]

[Good choice, Allen. That would have been a battle you would have lost. She kneels down to get a better look. The cut on his leg is fairly deep but it doesn't need stitches, thankfully. As she disinfects the wound:]

What happened?

[Yep considering the last redhead (well pink haired) lady medic went so far as to chained him to a bed while he was unconscious- he's learned not to argue with them too much]

[He meanwhile grits his teeth at the disinfecting, it stings]

Explosion on the bridge. My leg got hit by some sharpnel.

[... don't worry, Allen, Beverly is never going to chain you to a bed. More just like give you a firm talking to.]

[In reaction to his wince.] Sorry, I know it stings.

Hmm...

[She fetches a magnifying glass and some tweezers. Allen must have gotten to the big chunks already, but there are a few stray pieces of shrapnel stuck in his leg that she needs to pull out.]

Hold still, this will probably hurt a bit.

Was anyone else injured in the explosion?

It's fine, it's not that bad.

[he's had worse! Always had worse! But he'll keep himself still as much as possible for her to pull out the shrapnel]

I think Hawke...I patched him as much as I could at the time, but he should be here. [Somewhere around here..]

[She purses her lips.]

Don't worry, if he doesn't show up soon, I'll find him.

[She works out the last piece of shrapnel and tosses it down a little more forcefully than she intended. She's worried.]

Hand me that tube of antibacterial, please.

[Yeah, he felt that last piece of shrapnel alright. He flinches a little and his eyes flash gold- but he quickly suppresses whatever reflex those were supposed to be so they're back to their normal gray. Ugh. ]

[He'll do what he's told though, and reach over for the tube of antibiotic- holding it out for her] Here.

[He wasn't quite quick enough. Beverly noticed the flinch and the flash of gold. Taking the tube, she gently, apologetically, rubs the ointment over his wound before starting to wrap his leg with some gauze. When she stands again, she looks at him for a moment, debating whether or not to say anything about what she saw.]

Allen? I couldn't help but notice your eyes just now, the way they changed color... normally, I wouldn't say anything, but I just want to know that it wasn't any sort of physiological indicator that something is wrong, health-wise. Otherwise, [She holds up her hands in a semi-surrendering motion] feel free to tell me to mind my own business.

Ah-

[...Shit. He freezes a little. His eyes had changed color? He supposed he shouldn't be surprised and just be thankful it wasn't more obvious. Still, she saw it? That's a-]

Um, it's...

Well, I was hoping to...explain that to everyone soon. I mean, everybody in the crew...

[This is awkward, he'll try to add in a joke at the end.]

Maybe with ice cream and cake?

[Seeing his clear discomfort, she realizes that this has to do with something more than just eye pigmentation. She rubs his upper arm comfortingly.]

You can tell us whenever you're ready. I just want to know you're okay.

[He swallows and gives a nod]

Thank you, but I'm fine for now. I'll explain once things have calmed down some, promise.

[She gives his arm a final little squeeze before letting go.]

Alright. I'm always here if you need someone to talk to. For now, let's get the rest of you cleaned up, hmm?

[She begins tend to the rest of his cuts and scrapes.]

[That squeeze...it makes him think a little of Lenalee. She'd always squeeze his hand to reassure him, or reassure herself. It was...comforting.]

[Then, as if to change the subject]

Have many others been injured?

Not as many as I was expecting, when I saw the state of some of the ships. Either we were extremely lucky, or whoever that was who attacked us just wanted to frighten us.

[He mutters] Or just wanted to improve the ratings...

[Raising one eyebrow, a wry smile on her face]

I was thinking the same thing.

[He gives a little nod]

Paradisa would do things like that. It's said it fed on emotions, so sometimes it'd throw us into dangerous situations with no warning.

The place itself fed on emotions? How odd.

Though I suppose it could be said a television audience feeds off of emotions as well. I just hope they don't get too hungry and do something even worse than this.

The castle did, at least. Apparently it wasn't the only one on that world that did either....though, from what we heard about the fate of the other castles- we were lucky.

[That's right. Because being thrown into extremely dangerous situations is "lucky"]

Mm...I hope for that too. Though I'm ready to prepare if it does turn out like that.

Absolutely. This fleet is in no shape to fight off another attack. Beyond getting the ships repaired, we need more organization... it was basically every ship for itself this time. Not that I blame anyone for that. We had no warning. Still, we have plenty of ships, there is no reason we can't have some sort of plan in place for next time.

[There's a pause, then he shakes his head; Allen's heard that talk too many times before]

An attempt to have organisation with every ship in the fleet won't work well. The ships change hands too often and we come from too many different backgrounds. Most of us aren't from any sort of military like Starfleet, nor do we have any interest in becoming part of something like that. Even I tend distrust authority.

[Honestly, he's been loyal to Sokka because he wants to be. He'd have no problem disobeying a poor captain. He moves his arm up to run his hand through his hair]

I mean, I can understand where you're coming from....but maybe it'd be better to start trying just to have the ship crews be ready and willing to work with each other as a team first, before we talk about joint ship efforts.

[Oh dear, no one in Starfleet likes being told that they're in a military organization. They're explorers! Diplomats! Scholars! (Who just happen to be the Federation's primary line of defense as well.) Beverly knows, however, this is not exactly the time for a Patented Starfleet Lecture. She crosses her arms.]

I realize that. I'm not saying we need start appointing admirals and saluting one another. Just ... surely everyone can see the benefit of backing one another up if it comes to another fight?

But you're right, the individual crews need to work well together first before we can talk about anything fleet-wide. I believe our crew did an admirable job, considering the circumstances. We could all do with some cross training, however: basic ship's operations, first aid, repairs, that sort of thing.

[A pause]

Of course, a diplomatic solution should always be sought out first. We don't know for sure that those ships were brought by Atroma. When I talked to Ino about it, though, she said the last ships you tried to contact ignored you, so I don't know how much of a possibility that is.

[Sorry you look military enough for him! What is schematics. But he listens to that, giving the occasional nod]

Cross training would be a great idea. If Hawke hadn't solidered through his injuries, I don't think either Katara and I could have taken over for him. Same with any of our positions- we got lucky.

[And at that last part, his shoulders slumped]

Honestly, I don't know who they were- but it wouldn't surprise me if they were connected to Atroma. I'm....sad. That we couldn't talk to them first.

[She nods.]

I understand. We know so little about this universe. There is that chance, however small, that they aren't part of Atroma's schemes and to blindly be fighting them without knowing anything about them... I don't like it at all. It goes against everything I believe in.

Mm...mine too.

Next time, we'll do what we can to learn about them. Maybe we can find a peaceful solution.

I certainly hope so.

[A little more optimistic.]

You'd be surprised at the number of time fighting seems inevitable but peace is made instead. If we never try, then it definitely won't happen.
