[Beverly is onscreen, the Blue Fish's med bay, still intact, behind her. Her jaw is set with determination as she talks.]

Attention, Drift Fleet. This is Dr. Beverly Crusher of the USS... of the SS Blue Fish. I know some of you have taken significant damage to your ships, possibly to your sickbays, and that others do not have a medic on board. Fortunately, our sickbay survived the attack, so I am offering it as a central location to help the wounded while repairs are being made elsewhere. We have a small supply of blood on hand as well, should anyone need it. If any member of your crew is too severely injured to be moved, please let me know, and I will come to you. No payments will be necessary for any treatment.

[She signs off with a grim smile.]

Oh, hello Katara!

[A pause. She feels like she has been asking questions like the one she is about to ask Katara all too often lately.]

I would love some help but ah... what's waterbending?

[kyasdaughter]

Oh, um.

[ katara smiles at that, though, because she was used to getting it in paradisa. she steps inside, careful to keep a respectful distance between her and the other woman. she's still feeling out the whole social dynamic of this new place. ]

I'm not really surprised Sokka hasn't mentioned it... some people in our world are able to control the elements. [ it's way, way more complicated than that, of course, but she's learned to boil it down to basics after a year in the castle. ] I can bend water... and it has some healing properties, for people who know how to use it for that.

[Meanwhile Beverly is wondering why Katara is lurking near the door. Is Beverly making her nervous somehow? She smiles warmly and beckons Katara forward with her hands.]

Come in, come in, there's no need to stand in the doorway!

[She waits for Katara to step closer, then says:]

I'm afraid I still don't quite understand what you mean by being able to "bend" water. Perhaps if you could demonstrate?

Oh, sure.

[ when beverly gestures her in, katara seems to relax immediately. not that she was particularly stiff beforehand, but it's always so much easier when you have a read on a person, and she smiles at her when she approaches. ]

Here, let me just - [ she has a small water sling that sokka had given her when she'd arrived, and she pulls the water from it with a small gesture, gloving her hand with it as she does. ] See? Like this.

[Her eyes widen with surprise, but also interest.]

Amazing! How does it work? You said it was an inborn trait in some people, correct? Does that mean Sokka isn't able to bend?

[kyasdaughter]

That's right. I mean, he's still a really capable fighter, and he's just as capable as any bender, honestly - [ wow, is it obvious that she missed her brother while she was in paradisa yet? ] - but it's not something you can learn if you don't have it from the start.

I can believe that. I must say I was very impressed with how Sokka handled himself today.

[kyasdaughter]

[ she can't help but brighten a little at that, pride on her face. ]

He's done a lot of really great things here. Statue of Suki aside.

I think it's sweet.

[Don't get her wrong that statue is hideous but it is so endearing.]

It's clear he loves her very much.
