[It's a party for a narcissistic redhead who likes to be reminded she's alive.  Come celebrate!  Alternately, come sneak in and steal the food!  There's a bar set up for drinks drastically lowered to cost-price or to-be-paid-later-tab, a non-alcoholic punch in case of wandering minors (spike it and Nami will end you) and random snacks.

Oh, and a pool.  Which is heated.  Kind of important, that part.

Oh. [He nods.] That makes sense. I think that it's a questionable exchange for anyone who lives in a situation where exposure to salt water is highly likely, but.

[A shrug. Some people are stupid and make questionable choices, which he's too polite to say.]

It's a tradeoff, mostly. Most pirates who want to make something of themselves travel to the end of the most unpredictable, threatening ocean. The further you go, the more threats you face-- to the point where most normal people wouldn't be able to progress further.

[Did she ever mention she was a pirate? She can't remember.]

[She did not. He is, perhaps, a little more surprised by this than he should be.]

You are a pirate?

[That answers that question. She tilts her head with a small smile.]

Yep. Is that a problem?

[candothat]

You don't seem like the pirates that the Federation encounters, so... no, not at all.

[mikangirl]

Could be a cunning ploy. [But she grins.] Don't get me wrong, though. Most pirates are monsters.

[She wouldn't dream of defending her profession. Only her crew.]

[candothat]

If it is a ploy, it's a remarkably convincing one. [He clearly does not think that she's just pretending to not be a monster.]

What is it that you do as a pirate? Sailing, of course. Do you look for treasure?

[mikangirl]

Well, treasure's definitely up there in general. But specifically, we're looking for the One Piece. Nobody knows what it is-- just that it's the treasure of the original Pirate King, executed more than twenty years ago. He dared every pirate on the sea to be the first to find it.

[He's silent a moment as he takes this information in.]

Doesn't 'one piece' usually refer to clothing? One piece swimsuit or jumpsuit, or those sleep clothes with the feet? Perhaps the Pirate King was very into fashion.

Well, we're bound to find a lot of good stuff on the way, at least. And Luffy definitely doesn't care that much what it is. He's having too much fun sailing to get there.

["The real treasure was the friends we found along the way!" Something like that.]

Luffy. ["What a strange name for a pirate," he does not say, but the observation is tonally present.]

Your pirate crew sounds unusual with the sinking in salt water and the searching for a mysterious treasure. Far different from the Orion and Elasi pirates at home--which I mean in a good way, of course. [Seriously, those guys are jerks.]

[She arches an eyebrow at him.] Monkey D Luffy. In full. [Pirate names are weird in general, she thinks.]

I'm guessing your pirates at home are more of the loot and pillage and kill kind.

That is a perfect name. [So, so serious.]

Those things, yes, and some others. [Slave trafficking, trying to start wars for the sake of profit... y'know, pirate stuff.] But usually they avoid Starfleet vessels, so you're the first pirate that I have ever spoken to.

Is it Starfleet's job to arrest pirates?

[candothat]

Sometimes, but only the bad pirates. Starfleet, I think, would be more inclined to try to recruit you.

[mikangirl]

Huh...

They'd probably succeed. I'm only a pirate under very specific crew conditions. [Grin. But her eyes soften.] Also, my mother was a marine. I thought about that, way back when.

[candothat]

She was? What made you choose piracy instead?

[mikangirl]

Long story. Probably best you ask me that when we're not meant to be celebrating.

[She doesn't want to bring anyone down. Least of all herself.]

Yes, probably.

[He should know better than to ask about potentially tragic backstories at poolside birthday parties!]

And you being alive is a very good thing to celebrate.
