[ The Blue Fish has unlocked achievement: Ironically, a Pilot! Ironically, considering it's probably still a bit dinged and dented from the recent attack, when they ...didn't have one.

But no matter! The point is mingling, and also painting. This has nothing to do with anyone calling the ship's interior boring, naturally, that is total coincidence. The cats will be helping by walking through spilled paint at every opportunity, rolling around in said spilled paint at also every opportunity, and biting Achilles' tendons.

Sally forth, friends, Blue Fishians, country...men...spaceians?? Mingle 'til you just can't mingle no mo'. Or. Something. ]

Thedas thought they were extinct! Until they ...started showing up and eating people. Immolating large swathes of countryside. Wreaking general havoc.

Aang went to see them, so he could probably tell you more about them than me.

[ Hawke's rubber features mold themselves with exaggerated slowness into a fantastic mask of bemusement and confusion. Probably a little laughter, but that's like saying he's breathing. ]

Okay, I wasn't there, so I'm gonna fill in the gaps with my own comic improv.

Anyway, where I come from, some people are born with the ability to manipulate the elements. Katara? She's a waterbender. ANYway, Aang is the Avatar, meaning he can bend all four, but he had to learn them first.

Unfortunately one of the few firebenders who wasn't a complete jerk, who came to teach him had a big crisis of faith, and needed to re-learn it himself.

[ Hawke laughs openly at the first sentence; he is primarily a chuckler, so those are rare. ]

You mean they're mages. Highly symbolic mages, by the sounds of it.

[ Narrative apologizes like, really hard for what just happened to the fourth wall, but ...DO CONTINUE, SOKKA. ]

Anyway, apparently the original firebenders learned how to firebend from the dragons. Aang and Zuko, they went off to this temple to find someone who could repeat the lessons. They said they found dragons, who taught them a dance, that taught them better firebending?

I don't get it, personally. The whole bending deal.

You mean you don't do it, or you don't get what's so bloody special, or both?

[ The middle bit is absolutely mimicking Carver. Hawke misses him terribly. ]

The first. I mean, I understand it's important but I'm a non-bender. I can't bend, and I never will, it's just...the luck of the draw, I guess?

[He gives a shrug. ]

It's hard to really understand something you can't do yourself. They have these deep connections to their elements, they have to train for years to master them. I don't have that connection, so I don't get it.

[The parallels between being a mage and being connected to the Fade, and not sure are strong here, huh. ]

[ This is probably not sympathy Hawke could have relayed without ten years behind him of trying to make his relationship with his brother better, but. Here goes nothing anyway. ]

Means you have to work twice as hard to make yourself useful, doesn't it. It does seem to have paid off, if that says anything from a near-stranger.

[Aw, Hawke, that gets a small smile out of him. ]

Thanks. I'm a long way away from where I want to be, yet. I've got a lot of people counting on me, and I'll have even more when it's my turn to be chief. I've got to be as good as I can be, and then a lot better on top of that.
