[Goodness, what a mouthful. She appreciates the bow, though, and she can hardly talk. Makie returns it, all wariness leaving her expression.]

Otono-Tachibana Makie. Do you have friends here, Mr Chekov?

It's good to meet you, Miss Makie.

I do, yes. Kitty has been my friend for a long time, and I know most of the rest of the crew. And now I know you.

[...you actually look vaguely familiar. But then, perhaps she's seen him about in passing.]

You are from her world, then? Or from... her previous place? [What was the name-- but ah, if he doesn't know it, it doesn't really matter.]

The previous place. Marina. But she remembers less of it than I do, which is strange and sometimes awkward.

...Did you work at the Melting Pot, Miss Makie?

[She blinks, a little taken aback.]

I still do. I work in the kitchens, for the most part. [The place is a little chaotic and disorganised while people work out who's running the place post Jarvis, but she still goes in each week.] Why do you ask?

[candothat]

Ah, that is where I've seen you! [As a great fan of food that doesn't come in gel or tablet form, Pavel isn't a stranger to the Melting Pot. Or anywhere else in the Fleet that tends to have real food.] I'm sorry, I was trying to remember.

I'm also sorry about Mr. Jarvis.

[Oh, that's probably where she's seen him from, too. It draws a smile from her, anyway.]

We weren't close, but he was a good man. I hope the life he returns to is a good one. It's nice to meet you properly, then, Mr Chekov.

I know that Mr. Jarvis had people to return to, so... [So. Even if it's not the greatest life, he's not alone. That's something.]

You as well. It's strange, I think, how easy it is to not meet people you see frequently, even here.

It is the nature of man. We close ourselves off, for the most part. [And some people are intensely private.] But sometimes it can be taken too far.

Maybe that's even truer in places like this--places where no one stays. [A smile.] Are you always so philosophical, Miss Makie?

More a judgment on my own shortcomings, I fear. It's ... difficult to adjust when most are from a time period well beyond your own.

[candothat]

It isn't necessarily a shortcoming, being reserved, particularly when people around you think very, very differently.

[therewerefifty]

It's hard to adjust. [Admittedly.] But sometimes I should very much like to think the way many others here do.

[Most people are of the opinion that women are better than ornaments and tools, for example.]

[candothat]

Maybe it would simpler, but there is value in the way that you think too.

[Except for thoughts involving women being on par with ornaments and tools. Those thoughts can get right out.]

[Her eyebrows lift slightly at that.]

...you're from far ahead of many people here, I think. For me, I believe the year translates to 1783.

Eighteenth century? Between us, we average out to someone modern.

[Feeling out of place by virtue of coming from a different time is something he gets, although he's had years to adjust... and coming from the past seems like it would be more difficult than coming from the future.]

I hope that the ways that thinking has changed have been for the better, in your experience.

Greatly so. [She hesitates, but Makie reminds herself she is trying not to be so withdrawn.]

I am allowed to have my own space here, and be myself. That's a... positive thing to realise.

[candothat]

Very positive.

[Pavel, habitually over-polite and fairly skilled at reading between the lines as he is, is getting the impression that Makie might not be comfortable asking for the space that she knows she's allowed to have. He takes a step back towards the exit.]

I should be going. I'm pleased to have actually met you, Miss Makie.

Oh... [Actually, she doesn't mind. But talking with other people does get exhausting after a while, even if she's trying to do it more. So Makie smiles faintly.]

And you, Mr Chekov. I shall see you again, I'm sure. [He eats at the restaurant, it's inevitable.]

Yes, of course.

[He bows on his way out and yes, he'll definitely talk to Makie again. She's very nice, if sort of reserved and sad in a way that most people in the fleet are not. Clearly she needs another friend.]
