I have tried the piano, briefly. And the guitar. But both instruments are still near wholly unfamiliar to me.

In my time, the shamisen is a popular choice for daughters of samurai households. [It's considered elegant, making yourself look good, all that jazz.] Most instruments I have been introduced to since then are not ones I would be familiar with from home.

I have some ability to play both of those as well, but we have a band that records all of our music separately from our singing. We need the instrumentals more than any copies of singing, unless they're being sent out to our fans.

[With Walküre's performance schedule, however, live concerts happened a lot.]

Samurai households. [Yep, ancient Japan on Earth. It's just a strange thought.] Did you belong to one of them?

When I was very young. Not for a long time now.

[Oddly, it's history that doesn't hurt much anymore. Death and long term space drifting tends to put things in perspective.]

And what was that like?

[She's never had a family. And it's not like she has much of a realistic look at that time on Earth. Especially since life there after 1999 was drastically different from when Makie was alive.]

Strict, but... comfortable living, I suppose. Far better than many others had it. I was young enough that I was still allowed to do many things as a child, and had only just got to the age where I was expected to be more serious.

[If she'd never been thrown out, she'd probably have been an entirely different person.]

That reminds me a great deal of the way I was 'raised'. Aside from all of the singing in the middle of battle.

[That's the reason she was created, after all. However, her personality was pretty much formed before she was allowed to come and join the other girls in the group.]

Although, you strike me as someone who is serious a great deal of time.

Mmm. [Others have said as much. Her smile is wry.] I suppose I'm not the sort to joke and laugh, as others do. But I like listening to them.

[Well, she's still being "raised". It's not easy being clone-y.]

Being unlikely to laugh and joke like others isn't always so bad. I have a friend from home here who is like that. But he is still very kind and good. So, I hope no one gives you a hard time about that.

You have people you know here, then? [Makie... has someone, but he makes no real difference to her in that score.] Does it make it easier, being here?

Yes, are you familiar with Kaname Buccaneer or Freyja Wion? I know that Freyja isn't here now, but she was before. And Messer Ihelfeld is the person in question, not that I'm sure he's used the network before now.

And I'm not sure if it's easier or harder. I have nothing to compare it to. I haven't been without them.

I have met Mr Messer. On the Blameless, correct?

[He makes her look positively talkative.]

[Mikumo smiles softly. It's good that he knows others.]

Yes, that would be him. He is a member of the Delta Squadron that is attached to protect Walküre during our performances.

He's very quiet.

[They don't really know each other. But he was there on the bridge when she arrived, and he asked if she was all right. A good man, she thinks.] I'm glad he has others he knows here.

He is, but he speaks when it's required.

[She smiles at a stray thought.]

He yelled a lot at the newest member to the Squadron a lot. He's very stern when it comes to flying. He and I are alike in that way, but with me, it's singing.

So you're a disciplined singer? [She's trying to picture what that entails.]

I take it very seriously, yes. Effort and talent are required to be any good. Both are equally important, but talent without any effort is wasted and a waste of my time.

[therewerefifty]

[...we'll disagree on that. Effort will get you places talent gets you, just slower. But she can agree on the second part.]

Do such talented people often try to waste your time?

[ikenai]

[Eh, in her arena, no effort can help if you don't have the talent and the altered brain state. =P]

No, before I joined Walküre, there were a few other girls. They weren't happy with what they were doing so they left. I can understand that sentiment. However, there was one that I had to get....stern with before she snapped out of her funk.

So one that stayed with your group?

[ikenai]

She's a strong and sweet counterpoint to me, vocally. She was here before, I've been told.

And she pulls her own weight because she wants to prove to herself that she can. She's finally stopped trying to impress me.

[And now Mikumo is actually impressed. Funny how that works.]

[Ugh, people that try to impress you are so tedious.]

I'm glad to hear it. Is she one of the ones still here?

[Well, it's a good thing that Freyja grew out of it, right?]

No. Only Kaname is here from Walküre, but I've been told that Freyja was here. And who knows, perhaps she and the others will show up some day.
