[The feed turns on to Kaname moving around her personnel office. A moment later, she grabs the comm and settles on the couch.]

Recent circumstances have me wondering, have the positions of captain and first mate come into play often here? I'm sure there have been circumstances before my arrival, so I'd like to hear about them.

[She sits back, thinking aloud.]

I think part of it is that the roles are very involved and crucial on the ships back home with several tiers of command. I knew my role and the roles of those around me as well as I could. [She smiles.] Not that the set up here isn't relaxing.

Sometimes I just think about the differences and how it would affect life here if it was more like that. [Sitting forward again, Kaname turns a little.] Maybe it wo--

[The sentence is cut off with a yell of surprise from her. Dropping to the floor with a clack, the comm spins, camera eventually stopping and focusing on what made her yell in the first place.]

[She can't help laughing, but nods in understanding.] I'll keep an eye out just in case it comes to that.

[Kaname shakes her head, still smiling.]

Same for me. I think we're all right, though, don't you?

It won't. This would be a sad time of day to be drunk.

[He gives them both a once-over.]

I think that we're good enough to not have Nami to ask us to leave.

[axi]

[She lets that go, as much as she might agree. His next statement gets a laugh and a nod.]

Glad we're on the same page. Plus, I don't think her shift's started yet. Come on.

[And Kaname goes to lead the way.]

In that case, we may be in trouble. [He does not think that they may be in trouble.] I don't know the standards of the others who work at the Space Bar quite so well.

[Kaname looks back and winks.]

Don't worry. I'm her first mate now, I'm sure we can escape any trouble that might befall us.

[It's not a long trip to the Space Bar, and when they get there, it's basically deserted. Good.]

[candothat]

[What, no big midday crowd? Pavel picks out a pair of seats at the bar.]

I think that the odds of us being asked to leave and come back only after we've showered are very, very small.

Agreed.

[Wow, Pavel, going right for the bar. How bold.

Kaname slides on to the seat next to him.]

So what's going on in your world?

[candothat]

[The bar stools are tall! He likes being tall!]

Eh... the captain is a teenager, another crewmate is in a coma, and I'm being offered daily opportunities to ruin a friendship with stupidity. [A shrug.] So nothing unusual, not for the fleet.

[axi]

That's still a lot at once.

[Kaname slides a small bowl of pretzels and other assorted bar snacks over.]

Are you doing all right?

[candothat]

There are many people who have it much worse. I can't complain.

[Best not to add 'whiny' to his list of undesirable attributes, right? He helps himself to a handful of generic bar snack and opts for a topic change.]

How are you? I know that you have someone else from your home here. Mikumo?

[axi]

I'm not asking other people.

[She's not letting him go forever. There's still a long chat ahead of them.]

I'm fine. Yes, Mikumo's a good friend from home, part of Walkure.

[candothat]

[It was enough letting go! He's happy to talk about Mikumo instead.]

Yes, she said that she is the lead vocalist [~wocalist~] and that you are the leader, which I should have guessed. If you were in Starfleet, I'm almost certain you would be a command officer.

[axi]

[Kaname chuckles, shaking her head.]

She is the face of the group, there's no denying that. [His words do have her smiling, though.] Maybe, but I can't be sure. I joined Xaos to sing, not to lead. It just happened to fall on me to do both.

[candothat]

The hair of the group as well.

Then it's fortunate for Xaos that you are skilled at both. [Not that he personally knows much about her leadership skills, but she has the decisiveness, level-headedness, and willingness to listen that characterizes a good commander.] And also fortunate for your group. Even a very talented team needs a good leader to be successful at what they do.

[The hair comment has her grinning. Nice touch.

But she rolls with the topic as she can, Kaname does want to talk about him more. It's something he's not too big on, she's finding.]

I'm flattered you'd think so. [Re: her skills.] You've mentioned your skills before, but what exactly do you do on Starfleet?

[candothat]

[Look, he's never made friends by talking about himself and he just wants Kaname to like him.]

You say that as if you think that I may be wrong. [A smile.] I navigate. Sometimes I engineer or assist the science departments. I'm thinking of learning more about medicine so that I can work in the medbay as well.

[axi]

[She already does, nerd.

Kaname looks over at him, clearly interested.]

You really can do a lot, can't you? That's impressive, Pavel.

[She smiles back.]

Her interest is appreciated, if puzzling.]

I can... although being able to do a number of jobs on a starship well is not very impressive compared to what many in the fleet can do.

Hm, I'll have to disagree. A number of things people here can do is something they were born with being able to do. Yours are learned skills, and in some ways, that's a lot more impressive.

[Kaname slides off the seat to go around to the back of the bar to grab some water.]

You're selling yourself short.

[candothat]

Kaname, there are people here who can walk through solid matter and create storms from nothing and cure people with music. I think that I am being entirely fair to myself when I say that those things are more impressive than being unusually good at math.

[axi]

[Placing a bottle of water on the counter for him, Kaname looks at him quizzically.]

Does it get to you sometimes?

[candothat]

[She gets a 'thank you' for the water and a contemplative headtilt for the question.]

It sometimes does, yes. At home, I'm not accustomed to being relatively unremarkable.

[axi]

I'd find it hard to believe anyone here besides yourself labeled you as such.

[And from under the counter she pulls a bowl of fruit. Nami keeps a stash everywhere.]

What brought those thoughts on, anyway?

[Kaname won't say it aloud (not yet), but she never thought anything of comparing people to each other in the fleet.]

[Oh no, she's caught him! Pavel doesn't particularly like talking about his problems when he's convinced that he should be capable of fixing them himself, but she seems to genuinely want to listen and there's not a lot he can do in the face of sincere interest.]

They aren't so new... just more difficult to ignore occasionally.

[He smiles uncomfortably and takes the strangest-looking piece of fruit available.]

There is a girl in the fleet that I have been in love with for... years. Two, maybe more. And she is seeing someone now, the third person that she has been with since I realized that I love her, and so I'm thinking... perhaps there is something inferior about me. Since something similar happened with two other girls before, I mean.

[His smile disappears as he realizes that he really did just say that and wow, it's even more pathetic out loud than it is in his head and he needs to get over it, what an idiot.]

[Of course Kaname wants to listen to her friends. Her interest in most things is sincere, at least when it comes to people she likes.

The words get her to raise her brows, bit she stays silent as she moves back around the counter and retakes her seat. She listens, glad he's opening up, but a little surprised it goes this deep. To his credit, he's good at hiding it.

When he's done, Kaname poses a question before anything else.]

Do you really believe that, or are you just trying to make sense of things?
