[The doctor muses in agreement, following suit. He eyes the ventilation shafts overhead. For all they know, little Lyra could be hidden in any one of them.]

"Did you keep any pets before this?"

I had a dog growing up. His name was Codger.

[ Carl really doesn't know what happened to him- when everything went to shit, they couldn't take him with them, so Shane had set him loose. He likes to think that Codger made it okay. He was a smart dog. ]

"Codger. Must have been nice."

[He mulls over how to say it, speaking faster with his hands more than his words.]

"I had, well, I wouldn't call them pets exactly. But. Beings that.. depended on me and I may have developed a certain fondness for."

[Okay one he DEFINITELY ADORED, the other he might admit to more of exasperated sibling rivalry with.]

"That sort of thing isn't really looked well upon in my position. But when you get high enough up the ladder, some things can be overlooked."

[He stops walking. ]

"It's hard not to think about them."
