[When Cassandra wakes, she goes from sound asleep to alert in just a matter of a couple of seconds. She's out of bed immediately with a reflexive reach for weapons that aren't there. Naturally, this merits a frustrated growl, but no matter. She doesn't need a sword or shield to do some damage if she must to get out of...wherever this place is.]

[She scans the room with a little more scrutiny with a scowl before she notices the communicator and picks it up. Enjoy your new view of the ceiling, network, while she looks the device over in her hands because she doesn't understand why she has some vague sense of familiarity with it without ever having seen it before in her life. It's at least something to take her mind off the fact she has absolutely no idea how she got here in the first place.]

What is this?

[Answer her before books start getting stabbed, you guys.]

[She heaves an aggravated sigh. Did they not just go over this?]

I brought Varric near the Conclave, but that's all. He is the one who chose to stay, he chose to ask for Hawke's help, and Hawke chose to come. They were never forced in to the choices they made. And I had nothing further to do with their choices.

If it's easier for you to simplify the matter and paint me as a villain in your fabricated version of events that neither you nor the Varric here were witness to, then fine. Do so silently.

And as I already said, their choices tend to lean towards the stupidly heroic. You could have left them be from the start. You still would have had an Inquisition.

Do not presume you can tell me what to do with my opinions.

I don't expect this will make a lot of difference, Fenris, but she is telling the truth. When Hawke came to the Inquisition, I was already the Inquisitor. Varric didn't contact her until it was clear we couldn't do what we needed to without her help.

[He hates this multiple Hawke thing, he really does. It gives him a migraine. ]

So it may have played differently? For another Hawke?

[She considers this for a moment, how it would have gone, the other paths there could have been, and then she nods.]

At this point I really would believe anything is possible. Arhen, the other Inquisitor who was here? We were from the same clan, but his was wiped out and mine is just fine. I really don't think anything is set in stone anymore.

And... Fenris, you should know, the Hawke in my world is fine. After we finished working with her she went her own way. She still writes to Varric when she can.

No. I have...noticed a lot of differences, also.

[Their world is really weird, and he doesn't understand how so many different paths can exist, but there they are. But that...that gives him some comfort. It doesn't mean the Hawke he has met here is any less dead. But perhaps the one he met in Exsilium, perhaps the one from his own version of Thedas, they may yet live.]

That is...something, at least.

[He's still irritated, and by no means is letting Cassandra off the hook. Even if Hawke is fine, the Varric thing is still very much a real problem to him.

But hey, congrats, Jove. You stopped him from spitting like an angry cat everywhere. That counts for something.]

That's enough, then.

[The last thing Jove wants to do is tell Fenris not to feel as angry as he wants, he has every right when Hawke was clearly as important to him as she... he... as they were. It's an entirely different thing, though, to let him go on suffering needlessly when all it takes is one person to point out maybe some facts have been delivered wrong.

The simple fact is Fenris hasn't had a lot of hope in his life and it would be cruel to let him go on in despair. So she spoke up, and she's glad she has. She'll never regret doing everything in her power to help the people she cares for.]

And for what it's worth, she can be gruff in the beginning, but Cassandra is a wonderful woman. There's no one I'd rather have at my back, in or out of a fight.

[The weight is at least partially lifted. He can't save this Hawke, the one he has come to care about, but the others...perhaps not all is lost in the world.]

She still kidnapped Varric.

[The tone suggests he is really not ok with this. Varric is Special People.]

[Fuck her life, that gets a laugh from her.]

She did still kidnap Varric. She had me in chains when we first met, but I don't hold that against her anymore.

So kidnapping people she wishes to help her is something she does?

...

She is aware there are easier ways, isn't she?

At the time there weren't many options open to her. I was an unknown element in the middle of a very big problem, so I can't really fault her for trying to do what she thought would be safest.

I think she would argue that easier rarely means faster.

Or helpful in the long run. Varric would likely have made her life miserable. He really knows how to hold a grudge.

They get to a place of grudging acceptance eventually, don't worry.

That says a lot about her worth, honestly.

[Because Varric really doesn't do anything like forgiveness to those who have wronged him unless that person really deserves it. He might be everyone's best friend, but cross him and woe betide you.]

An Inquisition would have been impossible without an Inquisitor. I had no way of predicting that Inquisitor Lavellan would be the one. The Hero of Ferelden had vanished, and Hawke was the next best choice after she had been at the center of all that happened in Kirkwall.

You may disagree, but I did what was necessary.

[The venom seems to have largely been taken away from him now Jove has spoken to him. There's still a bubbling irritation there, though.]

Could you not have led it?

No. I could never be the type of leader that the Inquisition needs.

[In case you didn't notice, Fenris, she can sometimes rub people the complete and total wrong way. Hmm...]

I doubt Hawke would have been much one one, either. I trust him with my life but disaster tends to...follow him.

You would have only made more work for yourself. [Spend ten years with them, Cassandra, you'll see. ]

Perhaps. It matters very little now, however. It was the Maker's will for another to take her place as Inquisitor.

I am grateful for the help Hawke provided at Adamant, but I would ask no more of her.

[So that Hawke really is safe and well. Small comfort, but comfort all the same. Fenris is an ass, at the best of times, but he can at least see where he's been wrong.]

...It appears I have blamed you for something you did not commit, in your version of our world. My apologies.

You were concerned for your friends. And I did still take Varric.

I cannot fault you for being angry.

[Let's go for a non-committal noise shall we. ]

We are rather attached to him.

Believe me. You can keep him.

You should feel glad he hasn't written any stories about you. If you think he's a pain in the backside now.

[He is still mad about the kidnapping thing, but his tone is fond when speaking of Varric. He knows there's no way in hell Varric would be an easy prisoner. ]

[Maker help her if Varric ever decides to write anything about her.]

I should be safe from that. I can't imagine he would ever find anything about me to be good source material.
