Wonderduck

[Shin-Ah's first experience with confetti has him completely startled. So the first thing he does when there's strange noise and suddenly things flying at him is duck and cover. Which means someone might find him just crouched holding his head while he wonders what is attacking him. He doesn't have his sword so he's not entirely sure how to fight it.

Seriously. He's never seen this stuff before. Please send help. He needs it SO BADLY.]

Iskaulit

[After the scare on the Wonderduck, Shin-Ah can be found wandering the Iskaulit. Really he's familiar with the layout so he's not actually lost. (He can see through walls, guys. He knows where he's going.) However, it probably looks like he's lost. Because Shin-Ah will be walking one way then stop and look around before randomly picking another direction.

Should he go here? What about here?

In truth, he's on his way to the forge that he saw. He's just exploring on his way there so he can know the layout of this place well to know where everything is. It just seems like a good idea right now.]

I saw my first machine...yesterday.

[So basically...he has no idea what the hell to do with them or what they are in all honesty. Aside from confusing. So confusing. And one blew steam at him.]

Maybe you should stick to what you know until you've learned a bit more about this sort of stuff, bud.

[Her tone is gentle, but mildly teasing; he seems real eager to please, which is great and all, but it also means he might just step in something he ought not just yet.]

[Oh. He looks down, his chin dipping to indicate that's the case. He supposes that's...true. It's not like he knows machines.

But he also doesn't know... a lot.

I know...plants.

[Okay.

Okay, she knows normal people also like plants, but she's also been around Merle for over a hundred years, so she can't not make sure-]

You're not, like. Weird about them, are you?

[..............Okay he lifts his head to stare at her.

What? Weird about plants? What does that mean?]

[Oh thank gods.]

Perfect! The planet we're on doesn't have much in the way of greenery, but if you've got an eye for this stuff, maybe you can help me get spell components.

[He perks up so fast. Hm? Be useful? You bet that he's definitely going to do everything he can to get those spell components.]

What...do you need?

Ooh, good question. Just a sec, I'll make you a shopping list.

[She tugs her spellbook free from her belt, flipping through the pages to tear free a blank one, onto which she begins jotting down plant-based spell components she thinks might be found down below.]

Ah...

[He lifts a hand when she pulls out the book. But she's already started writing. And now he doesn't know what to do. Because...the list won't help him. Not even a little bit.]

I...

[His voice catches her attention; she doesn't look up from writing, but hey, she can multitask.]

What's up, little dude?

I...can't...

[He falls quiet a moment then.]

I don't know how. To read.

[She stops writing, tapping her pencil against the paper a few times. Ah. Well, that's a whole lot of useless, then.

Tucking the page back into her spellbook, she straightens up, putting both away.]

Okaaaay, how's your memory, then?

[And he perks up again.]

Good.

[A pause.]

...if I see it. I remember it.

Okay, that's a good start. If you find something, you can pass it on to me. Just bring it here, or to my ship, and leave it for me if I'm not around. I'll know, and I can send you feedback on the little communicator thing. Aaaand here-

[She goes to the smelting oven, sifting through the remnants to dig out a bit of old charcoal. She scrapes it against the metal, drawing a checkmark.]

If I mark it with this, that means it's good and I want more.

[She rubs it out with a thumb and draws an X mark instead.]

If I mark it with this, I don't need it. How does that sound?

[He follows after her and looks over her shoulder. The marks are very easy to understand and he nods eagerly at her.]

Mm. I can do that.

[And then he'll know exactly what doesn't work when she makes the second mark. That's easy to remember.]

Rad! That'll be a big help, then. Put 'er here, new partner.

[She holds her hand up for a high-five.]

[He...stares at the hand. And then he looks around trying to figure out what he's supposed to put in her hand.

In the end he finds a piece of something from the floor and hands it to her.

Yeah. He doesn't understand what a high-five is.]

[Oh no. Oh, honey. She laughs, because she can't not, glancing down at it and just... finding a place for it elsewhere. Seems like there's a few things he'll be learning if they're going to make this a long-term thing, because no one should live without high-fives. The inability to read might be a thing to address later, but that's not easy and much more of a commitment she's going to make for a stranger.]

Hold you hand up like this.

[Well now he's extra confused. But he does as he's told and puts his hand up like she's demonstrating.

Though he doesn't get why?]

[Fucking precious. She reaches up to tap her hand against his.]

It's called a high-five! It's for celebrating teamwork. Got it?

[His mouth forms a cute little "o" as he looks at his hand after she taps it.]

High-five?

[He looks to her again.]

Do you...like them?

[High-fives he means. Because if she does then he wants to make sure he gives them to her in the future!]

[She's sensing it loud and clear: this guy's got a severe case of People Pleaser. Someone is going to take advantage of this poor fella if he keeps this up.]

Undetermined. Did you?

[Because she's not answering until she gets a better read on things.]

[Okay now he's confused. She does them but she doesn't know if she likes them? Shin-Ah's not sure he understands how that works...]

...yes.

[It seemed...fun. Yeah. Fun!]

[She claps her hands together once, as if that settles some sort of debate.]

Well! There we go. High-fives are officially on. Anything else I can do for ya, bud?

[There's probably a lot she could do for him but unfortunately she's talking to someone who is likely to never ask for anything for himself.

So he shakes his head.
