It's Party Time [ Open ]

While it wasn't broadcasted, between how many people were told and the fact it wasn't exactly a private affair on a very public beach, anyone was welcome to come to this little shindig. Kirk's feelings were mostly that they all could use a break and a chance to relax together as friends, family, teammates, or any other word you chose to assign to the relationships you had on the Fleet. It was a nice break from working in projects too. It was nice to have something to occupy yourself in a creative and useful way, but it was always a good idea to take a break and refresh the brain now and then.

Which was how he came to the idea of a party on Alloy Lake.

He scouted a scrap of land near the water to set up on - beach towels, a cooler with drinks, a mocked up grill to cook some food. He went out later in the afternoon to start with more than enough light to enjoy some swimming, though it would be dark soon enough for certain members to join without being uncomfortable. At which point, a bonfire was built. What? A lack of sunlight is never a reason to stop partying! Especially not with such good company.

Water is...cold.

[He hates to be cold. He spent so many years feeling so cold while alone in the dark.]

...I don't know how to read.

[And he doesn't know if he likes drawing. He's never really learned how to aside from drawing images of what he sees in the dirt so he can communicate to others what he sees if he doesn't know what it's called.]

Would you like to learn to read?

[That gets him to look up. Maybe he could be more helpful to others if he could read. It's his first thought as he looks at the other man.

Before nodding slowly.]

All right. Well, if you like then, I can teach you to read. And math too.

We can work on it between planets. How does that sound?

[Shin-Ah looks so overwhelmed. It's such a nice thing to do. He doesn't look like he knows what to do with himself...

And then...he runs away. Seriously. Off he goes.

He'll be back. Give him a few minutes.]

_{[ Oh. Oh well... okay? He had smiled though so it was probably okay? Maybe. If this had been a cartoon, many question marks would have been appearing over Kirk's head just then. As it was he decided to let the boy deal with whatever feelings he was having and not scare him and keep tending the grill. ]}

[It's a number of minutes later before Shin-Ah returns. And he's got a bag with him. He quickly holds this out to Kirk.

And he'll find it's full of food. Shin-Ah's trying to say thank you and forgetting to use his words.]

_{[ Kirk took the bag and looked inside, and seeing the good, he smiles. He can understand the gesture, even without the words. ]}

You know, once you learn to read and write, you can write out what your favorite foods are, or find recipes for them to make.

I...like lots of food.

[Basically he's one of the least picky eaters of all time. Plus he doesn't know how to cook so it's probably better if someone else makes the food for him.]

Hah, all right, so maybe let's limit it to your favorites then. And if you learn to read and write, you can write how to make some of those foods and the cook on your ship could maybe help make them for you.

_{[ There's a twist in his heart as he thinks about it - about pulling out the young reader books he had gotten for Fenris to help the elf learn to read as well. But they would be better served helping someone else learning than gathering dust. He was sure Fenris would appreciate that. ]}

[He opens his mouth to try to say he doesn't have a favorite because that's what he meant but then closes it. Even though it's really obvious that he meant to say something before changing his mind.

...I'll ask which is the Tourist then.

[Since he can't read to know. Luckily he thinks that Lup or The Iron Bull will tell him no problem.]

Oh. If it's easier, I can come to you on the Heron.

It's not trouble, I'm offering.

[He shifts a little bit. He really doesn't want to cause the man problems by having him come. Shin-Ah doesn't mind going to him but...]

_{[ He smiled, almost reaching out to try and tussle the other's hair, but the mask was rather in the way, so maybe another time. ]}

All right then. I'll come to the Heron tomorrow evening with some things we can use for our lesson. For now, enjoy yourself at the party, all right? If you have any trouble, come find me.

[A shift of Shin-Ah's head reveals that all that white? Isn't his hair. It's fur that seems to be hooked onto the mask. His hair is actually blue under all that white.]

Mm. I will.

[Enjoy himself. Whether or not he comes to him with any troubles he has is another story entirely.]
