[Victor finally changed out of the striped suit he'd been wearing when he arrived. Not knowing if there was a proper medical uniform, he went with blue scrubs. Seemed like a safe bet. His hair is still darkened, since he didn't want to waste resources getting hair dye. And he's already made himself at home in the Heron's sick bay]

So I finally made it onto a space ship. I want to be excited about it. We're going to be out there exploring new worlds, discovering new life, boldly going and all that. And yet... [He sighs] This isn't really how I thought it'd go. Though if this is some ridiculous reality show, it would figure that they did it this way. Increasing drama, I guess.

Crew of the Heron, I'm your new medical officer. Or doctor or whatever it's called here. I'll keep my office hours flexible if you need anything. I've heard a lot of stories about living and working on a star ship. In spite of everything, I'm looking forward to it.

[And with that, he sets about cataloging all the stuff in the sick bay so he knows where all the medicine and equipment is. He doesn't know whether or not any of his new crew will come by, but he'll keep the door open for them just in case]

_{[ He doesn't immediately appear on the screen, having listened to Victor, and was... piqued by certain phrasing. He was sure it was nothing, nothing at all. It wasn't as if that particular phrase was unique, after all. But it made something flicker inside of him, a little bit of hope. It had been so long since someone else from his and Chekov's world had arrived, though he was fairly certain Victor wouldn't be from their exact time frame. If he was from their world at all. The fact he had never been on a starship was a rather large point against that theory, but it was not entirely impossible.

Being here really made you start reading into things, didn't it?

He finally opens a video feed, in all his blue-eyed glory. ]}

You really don't know the half of it, doctor.

[He phrased it that way on purpose, knowing that if James was anywhere on any of the ships, he'd get pinged. So when Victor sees that face on the screen, he lights up. Not knowing this isn't quite the James he knows, he addresses this one in a familiar way]

There you are. What ship did you get assigned to?

_{[ The familiar tone sends one of those eyebrows arching up, a slightly
confused look furrowing both, but it only took a moment for him to register
what might be happening. Probably. Better to be sure, but gently. ]}

I’m sorry, I think you have me confused for someone else. I’m James Tiberius Kirk, Captain of the Tourist and of the Enterprise.

Yes, I know exactly who you are, James. From a small town in Iowa, member of Starfleet, your best friend is Doctor Leonard McCoy, but you call him Bones.

But-- [He lets out a sigh] -- you're either from a reality where we've never met, or you've lost your memories of me.

_{[ There is a pause as he digests that. ]}

Yes, all of that is correct.

And unfortunately, it’s the later. I’m afraid we’ve never met. I was on the Enterprise for five years before I was brought here and I’ve been here for... damn, almost three now.

I'm sure you still know about me, captain. Unless in your reality, you never heard of Frankenstein.

Victor Frankenstein, as in the novels by Mary Shelly?

_{[ He sounds curious, though not particularly shocked. You live here as long as he has and things like that are just - well it's a sort of "why not" mentality by now? There's not enough surprise in the world for it anymore. ]}

That's one of the more well-known versions of my story, yes. Though not every detail is right, it keeps the basic idea.

_{[ He huffed a laugh beneath his breath. ]}

Well now my interest is piqued. Though I hope the medical aspect of those novels is still accurate. God knows we need more medics in the Fleet.

Yep, I'm a licensed doctor. I was the only licensed doctor in the small town I lived in before I went to the world where I met you, as a matter of fact. The other you. You know what I mean.

You know, maybe I should call you something different. You usually go by Jim, right?

That’s right, but you can call me Kirk. I answer to that just fine. James is for when I’m in trouble.

_{[ There’s a little smile that goes with that last statement. ]}

I guess that's fair. I know you but you don't really know me. So you're welcome to call me Doctor Frankenstein until you feel like being informal.

[That gets him to laugh] You do have a habit of getting in trouble a lot.

I’m not a fan of formality. But whatever you want me to call you, I will.

_{[ This guy obviously had a more intimate tie to another him. He didn’t
want to keep scraping at a wound. ]}

As if that would ever be in doubt.

Actually, I tell people to call me whatever makes them comfortable. So whether that's Victor or "doctor" or... hell, even my cursed name, Jonas Whale.

[A little smile] I have memories of two lives, captain. I know how to separate them, and I know how to separate you from the James T. Kirk I knew.

Victor it is then.

_{[ He cocked his head, not unlike a curious puppy. ]}

Cursed name?

Yeah, cursed. It's how I know about Mary Shelley and all the other versions of my story: I was living in a seaside town in Maine in the twentieth-century. I was given twentieth-century knowledge, and fake memories.

At first, we were all stripped of our real memories and given cursed identities. So I was Jonas Whale, Snow White was Mary Margaret Blanchard, Red Riding Hood was Ruby Lucas, and so on. And although I know who I really am now and have all my memories, I still remember being Doctor Whale.

Well that’s surely not a way to give a man an identity crisis.

_{[ It’s mind boggling to be sure, but he doesn’t think Victor is lying
either. It seemed a bit silly to in their current circumstance after all.

Yeah, I had one when we first got our memories back, but that was years ago.

Have to say it's impressive. I'm not sure how I would deal with that - two different sets of memories in my head.

I couldn't really tell you how I deal with it, honestly. But it was either that or become a mad doctor.

Lucky for us you didn't. Like I said, the Fleet is always in need of a good doctor.

Which, speaking of - have you had your questions answered about this place? I think Atroma gives you an introduction, but it really doesn't do the whole situation justice, does it? Has someone explained the Augment to you?

You mean this thing stuck in my head? Not really.

Well first things first - don’t try removing it. A few have tried in the past and it doesn’t end well.

The second is that it’s the thing that’s letting you understand the basics of the ships, especially anything related to your designated Augment. Mine, for instance, is Engineering.

I’m also fairly sure it’s one of the ways Atroma monitors us, but i don’t have any concrete proof of that either.

Explains why the Iron Bull asked if the thing in my head told me I was a healer. I'm glad that I got one related to my actual field of experience. I don't know if I'd like even more fake stuff in my head.

Same. I’m Engineering, like I said. I knew I went to school for that sort of thing for a reason.
