So it seems that not everything is as it was when we went into the calibrations. Of course we have added crew members to various ships and I would like to welcome them.

It is also regrettable that the Blameless has lost their previous captain as I have been promoted to the position. I hope though that he is well.

[For the first part after returning, Ulaz spends a great deal of time on the Blameless almost as if nothing has happened, taking over the captain's positions. But his crew will notice that at least initially, he is spending more time sitting in the dining room.

It is also likely that on the first evening, the crew and anyone who might be visiting will notice a random bottle of beer sitting in front of the door to the captain's room. It's full and unopened and just... there. If it gets removed, eventually another will appear in its place later in the evening.

The second day, the one that was there last is removed by Ulaz and another one doesn't replace it.

During this time, he can also be found on the Iskaulit as well, doing his usual training.

[The first evening, as soon as the sun has properly set and it has been given at least what he considers a decent amount of time, Ulaz heads to Biffy and Lyall's room. He pauses at the door for a moment and then knocks]

[He nods, looking down at Koga’s hand on his knee]

Thank you. It has just been busy since we got back, wanting to make sure nothing is amiss with the Blameless. I don’t think I have sat down to think about it yet.

It can sometimes be difficult to find the time to dwell in our own thoughts. You have much to take care of now that you are a new captain.

[He sips at his tea.]

We both do.

[Because he's a new captain too.]

[Ulaz nods, choosing to focus on that for the moment]

Yes, that is true. You were promoted as well. How have things been since returning to your ship?

Quite well. My little friend seems to have been cared for in my absence.

[He waves to where a red and black bird sits nearby on a perch, just watching them.]

It seems nothing is amiss save for lost friends.

[Ulaz looks up, having failed to spot the bird upon entering. He had been a bit distracted. He does quite like animals and even just its presence is enough to help his own tension]

That is good. It seems Keith's wolf was also taken care of so I would guess all creatures were.

Yes, that is true. Lost friends and lost animals. It is undeniably quiet on the Blameless as Shiro's dog left with him.

That is a shame. Perhaps another one of your crew will find a pet they wish to have.

[He holds out his hand and the bird flies over to land on his shoulder. He strokes the soft feathers before holding out his hand for one of Ulaz's.]

Here. Let me have your hand.

I hope so. It’s... different when there is an animal on the ship and suddenly they aren’t there anymore.

[He watches how obediently the bird listens to the silent command, flying over just because Ulaz holds out his hand. It was impressive what animals could learn. At the request for his hand, he is surprised, but he does hold out his hand]

[With a gentle beckon, the bird moves along Kogarasumaru's arm until it climbs up Ulaz's to get to his shoulder. There it settles and starts to clean it's feathers.

The sword smiles then lifts his tea to his lips, letting the two get to know each other.]

[Ulaz watches the bird carefully sidle along Kogarasumaru's arm before beginning to climb his own. And now he definitely has a bird on his shoulder]

[And he reaches up to carefully stroke the bird's feathers the same way Kogarasumaru had done]

His name is Akadori.

[When Ulaz finds just the right spot the bird leans into the contact, even grabbing his hand with a foot to encourage him to stay right there.]

Akadori... does it mean something?

[Well, bird holding on to make sure he didn't move away is definitely a sign he likes that spot so he keeps his hand there]

[A sip of tea.]

It means red bird.

[...appropriate since Akadori is literally...a red bird.]

Well... that is an appropriate name then. I don’t think we could find one that fits better.

[He’s still petting said red bird, right where the bird directed him to]

He appears to enjoy his name. That spot as well. Though I'm sure you've noticed that.

[Soft laughter follows as he bird practically falls asleep from how happy the scratches make it.]

Yes, I have noticed that. He did not want me to move my hand.

[And he is practically falling asleep there as he keeps petting the bird]

He is a good companion.

I have enjoyed having him around. He certainly enjoys the new space that the captain's quarters offers as well.

I would imagine. There is more room there.

[He looks at the bird for a long moment before turning back to Kogarasumaru] What creature do you think might be good for me?

As a pet?

[He has to consider that a moment.]

What traits would you desire in a pet?

One not so difficult to take care of, but also one that would have some interaction.

[So no fish. Easy to care for, but fish aren't exactly social]

Would you like this companion to walk around with you? To visit the dojo and the fox park, for example?

Possibly. But I don't know if being able to travel between the Blameless and the Isakulit would be a requirement if it was the right pet and preferred to stay on the Blameless.

So primarily a companion for the Blameless. Are there any other things I should be aware of for pet consideration?

The hope would be to not be alarmed by canines.

[Yes, he meant Biffy and Lyall the werewolves]

Perhaps a cat? They are often unimpressed by canines but can be a good companion to the one who cares for them.
