[ He expected an answer like that. Eithan doesn't know a lot about making potions - anything he does, he's picked up from watching whenever his boyfriend ends up eyeballs deep in the process - so he'll leave all the smarts to him. Catalogs, though... You know what? He could be on board with that. Never thought there would be a day he'd be down for note-taking and nerd stuff, but Belth makes a good point about helping future generations.

... And okay, so maybe Belth makes him want to be a better version of himself. So what? ]

Close enough. [ shrug. ] I took a few jobs. Pretty sure what I'm lookin' for isn't exactly here, but I was warned about it, so I got curious, and I figured I'd check it out. And I got to run into you! So that works out.

[ He takes a second to look around, and smiles softly. ]

[Eithan is such a sap. It's a good thing mind reading isn't one of Belthazar's talents.]

How very like you. I've been working on some requests as well, but I took a break to do this. The entire planet is covered in resources; it would be a shame to pass up the opportunity to restock or learn something new.

It certainly is captivating. Would you like to walk around?

[He gets up and dusts off his knees.]

I'm never done with the nerd stuff, as you so bluntly put it, but I suppose I can pencil you in.

[He holds out his hand for Eithan to take, smiling so the edges of his eyes crinkle.]

[ He laughs as he takes Belth's hand. ]

Oh yeah? Well then, I'll consider it an honor.

[ It kinda is, really, far as he's concerned. But that goes without saying. Besides, it's not often they can just go for a walk together, let alone in a glowing, alien forest. Though, that reminds him... ]

Y'know, this is kinda like that time in the garden, at that ball... More impressive than that, for sure, but still.

[Belthazar takes the lead, despite being a bit shorter. He doesn't give a damn, he'll drag his boyfriend anywhere he feels like. He flashes Eithan a brief, shy grin and then turns his eyes to the path.]

I was thinking the same thing, actually. Or rather... I was lamenting there was nothing to blow up, but that's all right. We don't want to attract the attention of the beasts around here.

[ And Eithan will gladly be dragged! Well, more like walking beside him, but still. Wherever Belth goes, he follows. ]

Shame, huh? No fancy statues of the self-absorbed to detonate. [ He grins, too. ] Ah well, if we really feel like gettin' into trouble with nature, I'm sure we can find somethin' to explode on the way out.

[Belthazar seems to give this some serious thought.]

[He leads Eithan closer to the lake but he's taking his time. The path is a little windy, which suits him just fine.]

True. [ Beat. ] Well then obviously for the greater good, we should blow somethin' up. Maybe there's a self-absorbed monster around. Win-win situation.

[ Eithan gives a low whistle when he spots the lake. ]

Yeah, I don't care how many places we go that have glowy water - it'll never stop bein' awesome.

[spellsteal]

I can't argue that. Rid the world of a monster, rid ourselves of boredom.

[Belth goes right up to the edge and crouches beside the water. He sets the plants down and peers in.]

If there was a lake by my house, I'd love for it to look like this. [A pause.] Oh! I think the fish are glowing, too!

Returns from the dead. Again.

If there were some way I could get the lake outside my city to glow? I'd totally do it.

[ He sits on the ground next to Belth, and grins when he sees the glowing fish. ]

Idea number one would be takin' one or two of those back home with me. [ beat. ] If I got a say in how it goes down, anyway. You know.

Silvermoon is so gaudy most of the time, but I feel this would be better. It's just nature.

[He glances over at Eithan with something of a mischievous smile.]

Are you sure they wouldn't just lose their glow? It might be diet thing.

[ He blinks, considers it for a second... But he sees that mischievous little smile, thank you very much, and he puts on one of his own. Eithan does not back down from "If You Give A Mouse A Cookie" scenarios. ]

Well in that case, I'll take some plants too! ... They eat plants, right? Or maybe we could like... Make fish food pellets that glow. Or somethin'.

I don't think it's that easy. Like, I see how you would think it would work... but your theory's off the mark.

Sadly, if my theory holds true, that makes it no easier to transplant floating fish into the water tank on the Iskaulit...

But that's one of the reasons Eithan likes him. ]

[Belthazar returns that shoulder bump and beams up at him.]

[That's how you know it's going to be a long explanation. And in fact this does actually go on for like, fifteen seconds, but the most relevant bit is:]

-- and that's why I think it could be some kind of compound in the water here. The algae reflect this, and then the fish eat the algae, and then something else eats the fish but at that point it's probably so diluted that it has no effect when mixed in with a varied diet. But if we did manage to find some kind of giant lizard that only ate fish from this pond, then it would likely glow, too.

[ Yeah, that's cool, Eithan's just gonna spend those fifteen seconds just... listening and smiling.

At least this particular topic is one he can wrap his head around! But it wouldn't have mattered to him if it were all jibberish. There are just all these little things that happen whenever Belth starts going on about something he's interested in - the way his eyes light up, how he starts talking just a little bit faster... It's wonderful. And okay maybe Eithan's just the idiot in love with a passionate nerd! Whatever!! ]

Oh. So you can't just stop a few steps ahead of the fish on the food chain, you've gotta go all the way back! Got it. ... So d'you think if you found out what the compound is, you could just put it in whatever water you wanted? Like, make your own glowy lake that way?
