[ the feed turns on, though it seems to start with a burst of static and a blurry screen before it finally seems to straighten itself out. though the scene you might be seeing seems a little . . . hard to take in. mostly because it looks like everything has been frozen. plants, grass and giant dinosaurs like T-Rexs that were in mid-lunge to bite on . . . a huddled lump who has a quilt over their head and cocooned deep within the covers. And also happens to be sneezing a lot. ]

This — [ loki sneezes, looking pale, harried and a little . . . blue. ] — Is the worst. Why is everything so — [ another loud sneeze. ] — uncomfortable?! And how do you make it stop?!

[ he chuckled at that, wry. ]

That would defeat the purpose of coming here.

Ya think?

[Keith chuckled slightly in response.]

Alright. It's a pretty straight path back to civilization where we can get you on one of the ships back up to the Fleet. I'll warn you if you need to watch your step.

[Now... to keep talking... Keith kept moving now, holding branches and stuff out of the way so Loki wouldn't poke his eye out on one or something.]

So, uh... other than doing fancy drinks at the Iskaulit bars on occasion, what do you do in the Fleet?

[ it is strange to talk about himself. or be asked. thor does, but thor is family. ]

I am a Captain so I work to maintain my ship and my crew.

I just got promoted... so I guess I'm in charge of doing that, too.

[Keith didn't sound thrilled by that, but more resigned, like he accepted it because he felt he had to.]

Stay a bit to your left here... there's a tree.

[Keith followed the path along to the left of the tree in question, continuing on to the next part of the conversation so Loki could hear the directional change.]

What ship are you on?

The First Breath. It's a quiet ship but the crew work hard.

[ except tyrion. fuck tyrion tbh. ]

[Tyrion was unique...]

Sounds like a good crew. I'm on the Huntress. I have been since I arrived. I was the pilot before Mikleo disappeared.

[Keith was pretty sure this was boring as hell...]

You and Thor... you're like the Norse gods, right? But, real?

[ loki blinks. ]

As real as one can prove. We were there on your planet when you still used mud huts and charting the waters of your own world.

So, you saw a lot of our history, then.

[Keith frowned a bit.]

Probably not the best.

But, if you were there back then, how old are you?

[Keith, always tactful....]

Not as much as you may think. We did not spend a lot of time on Earth.

[ loki frowns, mulling over keith's question. ]

Perhaps a hundred or so.

[He nodded.]

That's younger than I would have thought for a god, but okay.

[He considered the other part of that.]

Well, I didn't see a lot of it, but I did see some of Asgard between you and Thor during the last calibration, so... I guess, I don't know. I can see why someone wouldn't want to go hang out in mud huts if they had a nice palace to go back to.

[Keith wasn't one to really talk, after all. He'd spent almost a year in a dusty shack by himself out in the middle of the desert... mostly willingly.]

[ loki stiffens abruptly, cautious. he vaguely recalls those memories and the fact that people were poking in his head tends to make him nervous. there are dark secrets in his mind that loki would prefer not to be known. ]

It no longer matters. Asgard is dead.

[There a beat. Keith fell silent, realizing he'd figuratively stepped into something he probably shouldn't have. His tone reflected that when he finally did speak.]

Sorry.

[He knew enough people who'd lost their entire worlds like that to have a basic understanding of what that was like, even if he didn't know it firsthand. Focusing back on the trail ahead again, he continued.]

It slopes up a bit here. Careful not to trip.

[He'd watch as they made their way up, too, just in case.]

[ loki shakes his head. ]

Why apologize? You had nothing to do with it.

That doesn't mean I'm not sorry it happened. It can't be easy to lose your home.

[Keith shrugged a little.]

Someone saying they're sorry doesn't always mean they accept responsibility for something. It's also kind of a commiseration, I guess.

[ loki hums. ]

I am familiar though I cannot say I understand it. There is a cheapness in words, despite their power.

I suppose there is for some people. But not everyone says things just to say them. Some people do mean what they say.

[Keith had been on both sides of that coin before... empty, broken promises, but also promises kept. He tried his best to be the latter because he knew what it was like to be on the receiving end of the former.]

Some. How can you tell?

[ though loki can tell, easily enough. he's always been perceptive that way. ]

[Keith shrugged.]

I just follow my instincts. It doesn't always work, but sometimes it does.

[He spotted the entrance to the underground city now.]

We're almost there.

[ he sneezes once more. ]

Good. I'll be glad to be done with this ridiculous illness.

It's not really an illness. Allergies are different.

[Though, Keith was pretty sure it felt like one.]

[ loki makes a face. ]

Those still exist? I would assume such things were wiped out long ago.

Maybe... for some people. I mean, it's not like we've been tampering with genetics as a regular thing in order to get rid of them that way... and getting rid of everything that a person could possibly be allergic to would kind of just end up getting rid of everything in general, I'd think, so it's still a thing.

[Keith shrugged a bit as they got closer to the entrance.]

Alright, we're here. [He pulled open the door.] The door's on your right, I've got it open. Once we're inside, we can transport back up to the ships if you want, or I'm sure they've got some pretty heavy duty anti-histamine medication somewhere in this place if you want to try that.

[ loki nods his thanks. ]

It should fade once I leave. I doubt the effects will be prolonged.

That's good then, at least.

[Once they were inside, Keith knew he was going to have to make sure Loki had some space to maneuver until they could transport back up.

It wouldn't be good to have someone accidentally bump into him in the crowd and die.]

I know a somewhat less crowded route back to the transporters, since you'll probably want to avoid crowds right now, yeah?
