Hello. I'm Allen Walker, first mate and one of the medics aboard the SS Blue Fish. I know there's been a lot of new faces, so it's nice to meet you all- sorry you got dragged into this.

[He clears his throat] Anyway a few quick things today.

First of all, I know many of you have been busy with securing engineering parts for the ships, but the clinics are still looking for supply donations. If you have anything you can donate to the clinic in regards to medicine or basic supply, I would be happy to pay you. [He links a supply list] If you're looking for specifics for ideas, I have some requests in that attachment. And if you like to make some supply requests of your own, you can do that as well too.

Second, it seems we've acquired a great deal of doctors, medics and healers. Welcome aboard! If it's possible, I would like to meet you so I can get to know of your capabilities and what resources you might need. Thank you!

And last of all, for anyone interested Dr. Crusher and I are offering lessons in first aid. Even if you have a medic on your ship, it's good to know these things just in case of emergencies. If you were assigned as a lab assistant but have no prior medical experience, I highly encourage you to come so we can make sure you're properly prepared. If anyone is interested, please contact me! And oh yes, there will be food.

Ooh, are we doing a roll call? Anders, with the Golden. [Allen's face is at least vaguely familiar, with the amount of time he spends on the Blue Fish these days.] Related question: if I know how to do first aid already, can I come anyway for the food?

...You know what? We could use more people, so sure. Go ahead. Just please try not to be too distracting.

[To show his quarters. They aren't having an open house, Allen.....]

Distracting, me? Perish the thought. [He will absolutely be distracting. But maybe he won't try for too much, just to be fair.] I'd be happy to be a seat warmer in your impromptu classroom, Allen.

[YES YOU ARE. YOU ARE GOING TO HIS QUARTERS TO PLAY CHECKERS AND HAVE CHANTRY STUDY SESSIONS. THAT'S THE ONLY REASON HE KEEPS HEARING "OH MAKER" THROUGH THE WALLS. THAT'S IT.]

Ah, Thank you, Anders! I look forward to seeing you...whenever we hold it. Dr. Crusher and I still have to figure out a date.

Preferably before the next time someone starts shooting at us, I'd assume.

[It's more a joke than a jab. The Golden had been overprepared on the medical side of things when the attack happened; he knows that probably wasn't the case for other ships.]

Have you got the space for it? It's not really the sort of thing where you can sit everyone down in a circle and hope they don't need a demonstration, is it?

Yes, hopefully before then. [and he gives a light shrug] Right now it's only three people, so I think we can fit them in my clinic. If there's more, we can try a cargo bay or perhaps a waystation. The largest thing we should need for demonstrations is a dummy - so it shouldn't be difficult to transport.

[A thought occurs to him]

Though, while you are here, what sort of medical skills do you have? I know people here come from many different backgrounds and I'd like to know what everyone is capable of.

The proper term is "spirit healer." So magic, for the most part.

[The technical details of how healers petition spirits of the Fade for energy is not something he feels like getting into. It's why healers are generally viewed with more suspicion than other mages, rather than less, and it would take too long to explain anyway.]

Along with everything else that comes alongside being a healer, I suppose. Field treatment, that sort of thing. I know more about plants than any one person probably should. Did you want me to recount my curriculum? Because I'll warn you now, it's terribly boring.

[That's not sarcasm, though, that's a real question.]

Spirit Healer, alright. ["Spirit Healer" is a new one, but the idea of another type of healing magic hardly phases him- in fact his expression is about the same as if Anders had told him he was something more mundane like a chiropractor or dermatologist.] I'm afraid I'm not familiar with that brand of magic, what extent of healing can it do?

Ah- that's quite alright. I'm not exactly a plant expert anyway. [Honestly considering his best friend is a florist it's a bit embarrassing how little he knows. Still..that makes him think] But...if you don't mind, could I send any medical plants I get as supplies to you to check to make sure they're legitimate? [Asteffiel may know a lot about plants too but...he's not entirely sure the guy understands yet to tell how they'd be poisonous to humans]

Oh, you know. [No, he doesn't, that's why he asked.] Anything from "had one too many drinks last night" to "I fell down the stairs after one too many drinks last night." Obviously, the worse the injury the more complicated the spell, and the more energy it takes. Though that would be nice, wouldn't it? If a paper cut were as easy to fix as a pulverized knee cap.

[That last bit is said as cheerfully as ever. He is, again, not particularly interested in digging into the details of where that energy might come from.]

As for the plants, it... [He sighs. He didn't actually mean to stumble his way into responsibility this time, but he'll still do it.] I suppose. Do you even get that many, up here?

Yes, it would be very nice. [He had snorted at the examples though. Since honestly, right now drinking incidents did seem to be the mostly likely to cause of injury] And alright, that's good. And it doesn't come to any serious cost to you, does it?

[Since hey, healing magic in his world comes at the cost of someone's LIFESPAN- so best to check]

Thank you, Anders. Not so far, but there's no telling what sort of medicinal planets might get donated considering the planets we visit. And I rather not be treating people with old wives tale remedies if I can help it.

Fair enough! You wouldn't believe the kind of stuff I've seen people peddle before.

It also gives him time to weigh how he wants to answer that first question.]

My magic doesn't come from nowhere, anyway. But I suppose that depends on how you define "serious." If I use too much of it, it could be a problem, but never let it be said that I don't know my limits.

[An amused sound] That bad, huh?

[But he considers that, giving a slight nod. It doesn't sound too different from what I regularly hear]

I see. Mostly I ask because where I come from, it's said that using healing magic comes at the cost of the lifespan of the caster. And I've heard other worlds have such heavy costs, though not all the time.

But if you're not concerned, then I'll assume those sorts of costs aren't part of your spirit healing...?

[unconfines]

Lifespan? [There's a flicker of confusion across his expression, followed quickly by something like wariness.] No. It sounds more to me like you're talking about blood magic. And I think it goes without saying that could get very messy very quickly where healing is involved.

Blood magic? [he frowns] I don't remember them letting out any blood for it, but maybe...

Sorry, I'm not exactly an expert on my world's magic.

[unconfines]

Well, in case you weren't sure, it's generally not considered a good thing to be giving up your own life energy for a spell, where I'm from. Nasty stuff comes from that, not to mention it being messy.

[He shrugs. That seems to be the extent of his opinion on the topic: nasty and messy.]

It isn't quite my thing, either way. You won't have to worry about any worrisome fainting spells from me, rest assured.
