[Today Felix prepares to do something that has the ring of familiarity to it for him, and anyone else who had once known him in Paradisa. The setting is different, of course, but old habit die incredibly hard, and he craves a little bit of what once was. Something that can distract him. He sets up the device on the kitchen table and reclines back against the wall.]

Greetings, fleet members. [He smiles, a bright thing reminiscent of politicians and celebrities]

I happen to know there is a good number among us here that practice magic or exhibit a talent reminiscent as such, and that many more of us still are deprived the company of our peers back home.

Before I came here, I organized a group of magic-users and thought the fleet could benefit from something similar. We had wider goals at the time, but I think here it will be far more about simply getting to know one another. [Though, if he isn't kidding himself, most of what they did was get together and drink] Perhaps there are things we can learn from each other, or perhaps it can simply serve as a source of solidarity.

If no one would be opposed, I'd like to organize more regular meetings, hosted in the Bishop's library to start, assuming our librarian wouldn't be opposed. Though, in the long run, I'd prefer to convert a space specifically for our use. The Starstruck's cargo hold, if nothing else. We aren't using it for anything else. [He briefly longs for the castle, and imagines a comfortable space full of chairs, rugs, and bookshelves.]

In the meantime, I'd like to know who might be interested in such a thing and to meet any of you with such talents that I haven't yet had the pleasure to speak to. [Which is probably half the fleet by now, but he's a patient man, when he wants to be]

Certain people who exhibit extraordinary abilities but don't define them as magic. A certain shapeshifter on my crew, for example, or a few warrior types who have apparent reality-manipulating powers in their arsenal. I've had more than one conversation with people like them in the past who refused to entertain the idea that it might just be another type of magic.

Really? Perhaps it's more natural to them than they might expect of magic, then.

[Shirley certainly recognizes now that eres more or less fall under the general definition of magic, but it's still strange thinking of them as magic than just eres.]

That depends on how one defines magic in the first place.

[The subject has become something of a pet theory of his over the years, and the mere mention of it brings up an eager sort of look in his eyes]

And how would you define magic, then?

[Shirley's no expert on the subject, but the way he looks talking about it interests her. This guy seems to know what he's talking about.]

The root definition is something of a work in progress, but essentially all magic is simply a source of power, internal or external, channeled through the will of its user, usually via systems of symbols.

Symbols...like words?

[Yeah, that would make sense.]

Words are one example, yes. Others may use written words or pictures, or simple visualization of the same. In some ways physical foci are another kind of symbolism.

And these are all things that you've seen people using?

I have. There's a stunning amount of variety from world to world, but at their root there can be much alike.

I take it, from your question, that you use incantations of some sort?

Yes, I do. Many of them are...appeals, in a way, to greater powers.

Something like prayers, or do you view them differently?

It's a little different than that. Rather...

Other forces are personified without being revered, like an object of prayer. It's those forces that people usually call upon.

Maybe it's because I've never possessed of any kind of faith, but I'm not sure I see the difference.

Well...in my world, the source of eres comes from the blessings of the sea, Nerifes, and magic is one way that blessing takes form. But many people who use eres don't even know of Nerifes' existence, and instead they call upon the comets or the storm. Even the Ferines do it, in fact, and the Ferines all follow the will of Nerifes.

And Ferines are what? Some kind of priest?

Ah, no...they're a race of people. Mine, actually.

Ah. Forgive my ignorance of your culture, then. May I ask, then, why your people have such a special relationship with the Nerifes?

The Ferines once lived in the sea, and Nerifes is the sea itself. If there was a time where they weren't close, it predates all known Ferines history.

How interesting. Is the talent for magic more common among your people, in that case, given your connection to it's source?

Yes, it is. The others on my world, the Orerines...some of them are able to use eres as well, but it's only a recent development and much less common than among the Ferines.

Well...I'd be eager to have a small demonstration when we get a chance to meet, if you wouldn't mind.

Of course not. I'd like to see a demonstration of yours as well, if it isn't too much trouble.

I can't promise anything spectacular, but I'd be happy to oblige nonetheless.
