[After what happened to Allen, Beverly has left him safely back at the casino stations with the Blue Fish. Instead, she, along with anyone else from her ship that needs a ride, takes one of the shuttles to the planet. It was clear enough that something about this planet triggered the Noah, and she intends to find out what. Armed with one of the pistols from the armory and her tricorder, she sets off into the jungle to explore.

Despite having no magical senses whatsoever (indeed, despite not even believing in magic), Beverly can still sense something slightly... off about this planet, so she opts to follow the treeline, staying within view of the grassy mesa she landed on. She'll be easy enough to find for anyone who wants to join her.]

[Kairi's already at the edge of the forest, contemplating how to venture in. Finally on a new planet, and she's hesitating. Figures. But then again, with that nagging, nauseating feeling in her stomach and the ominousness of the woods, perhaps it's not nerves but instinct telling her to be cautious.

When she hears someone approach from behind, she briefly turns around, nodding to Beverly before turning back towards the forest.]

It's Dark.

[There's an emphasis on the word "dark", as she doesn't mean its hard to see.]

But not in a completely bad way. It's not too prevalent right now. It might be safe, as long as we don't go too far in for too long.

Agreed. [She shivers a little as she looks deeper into the forest.] I want to leave before nightfall, so whatever we want to do, we need to get it done in the next 10 hours or so.

[She flips open the tricorder and scans the forest, but the readings are all over the place, as if it can't get a lock on anything. She frowns.]

The sensors are fluctuating like crazy. I've never seen anything quite like this.

Mm, yeah. We should get moving.

[Kairi takes a look at the tricorder, frowning as she tries to make sense of it.]

Are those life forms it's picking up?

Theoretically, yes, but the readings don't make any sense. There's no physical way there could be that many lifeforms condensed in an area this size. And it's having trouble even giving me any basic climate readings.

[She frowns at the device and attempts to re-calibrate it. When that fails, she sighs.]

I think something on the planet is interfering with its systems. If we could find out what, maybe that will tell us what triggered the Noah.

Does it pick up on plants? It is a forest...

[It's a stupid question, since she's sure Bev would have thought of that already.]

There must be. It did something to Allen, so I wouldn't be surprised if it could throw off your device. And I can feel... something. There's something not right about this place.

[So of course they're going to go in.]

Plants, and microbes too. But that doesn't account for these readings. I've never seen anything like them before. [Which, really, is saying a lot, considering how many planets she's visited.] Fortunately, it seems the GPS is still working. Regardless, I don't want us to lose sight of the mesa here.

[She looks at Kairi curiously. So she's not the only one who feels a little uneasy here. The way Kairi said it though... it sounds like she's sensing a lot more than Beverly is.]

That feeling. Can you be a little more specific about it?

Huh. Then there's definitely something going on we can't see. If there were that many animals, I think we'd see them. Or hear them.

[Kairi only nods, eyes still trained on the forest ahead of them. At Beverly's question, though, she turns and frowns, trying to find the words.]

It's... dark. Not overwhelming like when the Noah tried to come out from Allen, but it's there. It's kind of faint, like it's far away. [Whatever it was, its Darkness was permeable enough that she can feel it from this distance.]

Does it feel like it's coming from a certain direction?

Yes and no. It's weird. Kind of like it's coming from everywhere? But it's sort of faint, so maybe if I went in further...

I don't know if that's such a good idea.

But I thought you wanted to find out what made Allen's Noah come out?

[dancingmd]

I do... but not if it puts you in danger.

[ Iroh has been looking around curiously -- what a strange and interesting planet! But he has to agree, something is definitely "off" about the whole thing. Not in a good way, like the Spirit World might be, but ... just off.

Anyways, he's somewhere nearby where Beverly is walking, peering at some kind of leaf and deciding whether or not it's poisonous ]

[Beverly, too, is checking out the plant life. The tricorder scanning systems are all out of whack, but she can at least use it to record notes, so she's walking around making vocal commentary on what she's observing. She stops and smiles when she sees Iroh.]

Hello, Iroh! Have you found something interesting?

[ He notices her approaching, and nods respectfully in greeting ]

Hello, Doctor. I couldn't help but wonder if maybe some of these plants could be edible.

[ He smiles ]

I am not sure if I want to be the first to find out.

Probably not the best idea, no.

[She squats down to get a closer look at the leaf.]

Though it does look rather like a tea leaf, doesn't it? Perhaps I can take a sample back up to my lab...

[Putting her tricorder back in her pocket - one thing she has to give these Drift Fleet uniforms, they are very handy for carrying things around in - she takes a small plastic test tube and a pair of tweezers out of another one. Carefully, she plucks off a single leaf from the plant and sticks it in the tube.

The plant, however, does not like that, not one bit. It shoots out a vine and wraps it tightly around her wrist, causing her to drop the tube. She tries to pull her hand away, but the vine is surprisingly - unnaturally - strong. She tugs at the vine with her free hand, which only results in another vine shooting out to grab that hand as well. She's obviously alarmed by this, but she keeps her voice steady and calm.]

Ah, Iroh? Could you ... there is a small knife in my back pocket if you could get that for me?

[ Yeah, his demeanor quickly changes from casual to serious as he sees what just happened.

Now, if there's anything important in these situations, it's to move slowly and not startle anything into taking drastic measures. So he moves slowly, stepping closer to reach into her back pocket (wow that's a nice butt -- I MEAN WHAT) to get that knife, keeping his eyes on the vines ... ]

[Beverly suddenly gasps in pain.]

The vines... they're getting... tighter!

[He better be quick about cutting them off of her!]

SHE DO

[ --Well, shit. He can also see a few more snaking their way, so he abandons the knife idea, and takes a step forward towards the vine, fingers pointed as he jabs his arm outward towards the vines with precision. A small jet of flame shoots from his fingertips and severs the ends of the vines around her wrist, and another shoots from his foot to discourage the other vines from coming any closer ]

[Beverly stares for just a moment in surprise, having forgotten about the elemental manipulation abilities in Iroh's world. She turns to Iroh, intending to thank him but instead, her eyes go wide and she shouts for him to run when she sees a plant behind him looming over his head, ready to attack. Without waiting for him to respond, she whips out her pistol and shoots the encroaching plant before it can grab him. There are still others coming for them, though, if they don't start moving.]

Normally, I would say that we should try to talk things out, but in this case ...

[ ... He just tries to book it in the other direction, grabbing Beverly as an indication for her to follow ]

I think it would be best if we run!

[dancingmd]

[He doesn't have to tell Beverly twice. She takes off at a sprint, back towards her shuttle. The trees sprout roots and reach out their branches in an attempt to trip her up, but she expertly dodges and leaps over all obstacles. It's only when she reaches the edge of the mesa that she realizes Iroh isn't behind her.]

Damn!

[Without another thought she charges back into the forest.]

Iroh! IROH! Where are you?

[Is it just her, or has the foliage gotten thicker?]

[ He's a little ways back, bent over with his hands on his knees, panting ]

I really need to work out more.

[ ... There is definitely a tree branch reaching down to grab him ]

[Beverly tries to shoot the tree branch but her pistol jams and starts to overload. Cursing, she chucks the entire gun at the offending plant then flings herself on top of Iroh while shouting:]

DUCK!

[Because yeah, that pistol is going to explode overhead. Action Bev to the rescue!]
