[lucky for Felix, it ducks and startles behind the nearest thick branch. it has a notable aura--whatever it is--that almost lingers like the edge of a headache. it's not an evil creature, just a vaguely inconvenient one.

there's silence, for a little bit... but the witchlights fascinate him, and the forest has him feeling almost comfortable with himself, so a pale face peeks around the edge after a moment. its face is thin and its eyes are large and round. calling it "cute" might be going too far, but there are at least no fangs, scales, or scary glowing eyes to be seen.]

[Felix isn't a creature of darkness in any literal sense, but there's something more than morbid fascination or academic curiosity that makes his feet stay where they are. He dims the lights a few fractions out of an effort to not startle whatever it is too much.]

I don't suppose you understand me at all?

[it tilts its head. thinking, probably. the wide eyes don't lend themselves to facial expressions very well. it ends up ducking its head down, as if embarrassed.

...and then it speaks, the sound of nine voices all talking at once--men, women, children. each a slightly different pitch, all of them timid.]

Yes.

[The sound makes him shiver, the sound otherworldly and almost forlorn, like the distant echo of the ghosts he once saw at every turn.]

...oh. [It's clearly not an answer he'd expected]

Well, then, I hope I'm not intruding.

No, I...

[he looks at the lights again... a little distracted, he slowly drops onto a lower branch. now he's more visible, all long limbs and primate posture. Felix can make out his sharp little teeth, when he talks.]

This is not my forest. I'm trying to find the call...

[The teeth make his heart beat a little faster, but he reasons that running wouldn't make the best impression. Besides, that one feature doesn't quite settle into the haunting but still somewhat benevolent impression he's getting]

What call would that be?

The world...

[the creature looks back behind them... towards what might be the heart of the forest. then again, the forest is so expansive that wherever he looks might as well be as close to the heart of things as any other direction.]

It's calling to everyone, I think. I can't figure out why.

[Felix opens his mouth to say he'd not heard any such call, but abstractly speaking there was certainly something about the place that had made him come here in the first place.]
